I get Bob Ryan is Boston royalty for his Basketball writing. But that dude just sounds f'n insane when it comes to the Pats. Good god man, dude legit sounds like your crazy grandfather on christmas eve.

Someone needs to tell dude to stick to BBall, and stay away from football.

The excellence of Ryan's writing in the late 70s and early 80s is a major part of why I became a Celtics fan.

That in no way defends any poorly thought through opinions he may express 35 years later about a different sport.

The same can be said for Shaughnessy and MacMullan. For whatever reason, there is not a "dean" of football writers in Boston. Borges should be that guy but hates the Patriots and is a generally scurvy human being. Even in this era, it's treated as a second-class sport by the sportswriting establishment. That's why the others think they can get away with looking down their nose at football and pontificating about something they don't fully understand.

I'm not from the area so I don't follow him at all...I know I've heard his name mentioned many times in relation to the Patriots but I just heard him on the radio and is he really as big of a moron as he sounded? He sounded like he had pure hate for the Patriots. Was talking about his article to be released sunday, said well let's just say I won't be invited to the kraft or belichick anytime soon.
Has he always been like this?

Yes, he is one of the biggest a-holes in the Boston Media.

This is a really great post. I am going to start with the bolded.

Football in Boston has never really had a go to writer. I inherited my pats fandom through my Dad. Now I am from TO and been following the Pats since the 80's early 90's.

Being from Toronto the only Championships I have seen besides the Pats, is the Jays in 92 and 93. And just reading and listening to Boston media, I don't think they really understand what they have with Beli and Brady. And it really pisses me off.

Joe Carter could kill a baby and I would probably defend him, Doug Gilmour could probably kill our PM and I would understand. And most Toronto media would agree.

It is F'n mind boggling listening to the Boston media sh!t on Tom. I have been pretty chill during this so called deflate stuff b/c I could give a F what other teams fans or media think.

But watching, and listening to the Boston Media turn on Tom, makes me f'n sick to my stomach. My anger is unreal toward the a lot of people sh!ting on Tom and Beli. But the way the Boston media has killed Tom, F' them, mother F them.

I just want to scream to the Boston media, Do you people in Boston grasp the greatness you guys are witnessing?

Edit:

This is a good read that sums up my thoughst better.

Fellow Patriots fans, I present to you: Bob Ryan, Dan Shaughnessy, Hackie "Man Hands" MacMullan, Ron Borges.

Jackie MacMullan doesn't belong in that group. She's a great basketball writer who doesn't insult her readers when the opportunity presents itself (nor did Ryan when he was the basketball beat writer.)

Borges and Shank can't write five paragraphs without calling out their readers as pink hats or fanboys. They are offensive and waste perfectly good newsprint by demeaning their readers.

Each writer who gets caustic with the pats makes me love the pats a little bit more

Football in Boston has never really had a go to writer.

NFL Hall of Fame writer Will McDonough of the Boston Globe was among the besr ever. He had connections in the NFL like Peter Gammons does in MLB. His On Football Sunday compilation had quotes from everyone from the Commissioner on down that no one else could get. Unrivaled.

McDonough was also close with Red Auerbach and a number of baseball players and executives.

Oh yes she does! I included her for good reason. Apparently you haven't been reading her anti-Patriots venom at ESPN.com.

In retrospect McDonough was overrated. He was an old-school "Bawston" general sports columnist who had an inner circle of cronies and wore his various biases/alliances on his sleeve. He had good sources but was very provincial and hated Bob Kraft as an "outsider."

Any Boston writer that appears on BSPN is going to tow their party line on this topic. That includes dead man writing Ryan and MS.WNBA Macmullan.

I'm sure the Great Celtics teams, and God forbid I say it, but even Red Auerbach, wouldn't stand up to even half of the scrutiny the Patriots face. Easy to forget stuff like that.

Luckily, there isn't a writer in Boston that is respected. So there is little chance an article any of them write will be actually read with anything but disdain. That of course doesn't drive them to excel, but rather allows them to sink even further into the muck.
Unfortunately the national media picks up on these and these guys get interviews and calls. So they dont write it for the local people.

He was bringing up all kinds of crap like patriots cheating messing up signals in opposing teams helmets and that when Patriots go on the road all the other teams beef up their security for their teams locker rooms etc and how this is the only team in all of sports that teams do this for.
Needless to say after hearing all this crap on radio no way I'm reading hip pos article!

Bob Ryan is an old Celtics columnist. He is still bitter because he was the king of the hill back in the 80s when the Celts dominated Boston sports. Now that he is mostly irrelevant along with much of the old guard, they have made a living bashing the Patriots.

What these writers don't get is that even though we fans do like to reason things and that it may bother us a little that something is not forthright, that when push comes to shove, the only reason we are here is because of how much I/we love this team and that at least to me, none of this will matter when it comes to game time...... I may argue a point and be completely wrong but the only thing that is certain is that I will love this team no matter what......the pats could be completely guilty and I don't care......they can all suck it

I heard an interview with him not too long ago when he was pimping his new book (which is supposedly a terrific read). He basically said "I have no use for the NFL and as a sports culture, we really don't need it." His reasoning was what it does to the body of the players and how it allows fans to behave like animals for 3 hours on Sunday.

I found it funny that he said that after writing a book on the Patriots' run to Super Bowl 31. This was one of the first books written on a successful Patriots team. Now, we are inundated with them.

In other words, Mr. Ryan, "I have no use for the NFL unless I can make a buck off of it."

As others have pointed out, Ryan is now in the shock and awe business. He's shockingly awful at what he does (thanks NFL Films!)

bob ryan is a ass. hes far to concerned about his national media colleagues opinions. he like teddy b are espns *****.

Bob Ryan is hitting the bottle again ... nothing new.
