How Do Patricia and BB Stop Seattle's O?

For the life of me, I don't understand why defenses don't "jack up" Wilson every single time he hands off to Lynch and turns out like he's still got the ball on a keeper. As I understand the rules, he's a runner at that point and is given none of the QB protections. LBs can light him up. I don't think it would take many of those hits to take a little wind out of his sails.

You can but Wilson is smart and tough. He will go down when he needs to. Wilson is very smart and will make sure not to take any unnecessary punishment. I would not downplay him, he is a winner, plain and simple.

The key is to keep playing solid football, just like the Indy game. Good, disciplined football.

Not sure if you noticed in the GB game, but he holds the ball a long time, before deciding on whether to leave it with Lynch or run it himself. That's fair game to me. May also lead to some turnovers in those situations.

The NFL supposedly clarified that rule last year. The QB is fair game whenever he fakes that he still has the ball. The only time he's not fair game as a runner is when he makes it clear by holding up his hands that he DOES NOT have the ball. On a fake, you can light him up.

The way college coaches stop the read option is to jack up the QB on EVERY PLAY, whether he keeps it or not. I don't understand why the pro coaches haven't done the same. Yes, you are "wasting" a defender on a player who doesn't have the ball, but what are the second half implications of lighting up the opposing QB a half dozen times in the first half? You'd think the defenders would be salivating at the chance to get them without their tutus and ballerina slippers....

Collins QB spy all game.

Revis on Baldwin, Arrington on Kearse, Browner on the TE Willson. McCourty single high and Chung/Wilson in the box, go big at DT with Branch & Wilfork.

If there is a spy on Wilson, have Collins and Hightower trade off. More confusion for Wilson than if it's always one guy.

A spy on Lynch might be harder to disguise, however, since Lynch can be moved around.

Jay, where are you?

Biggest matchup for me is the Pats run D vs those Zone C Gap runs.

We haven't been good at stopping them all year. Kubiak and the Ravens threw them out and ate up our run D.

It is arguable consistently Collins weakness and the weakness of our D as we like to stay in nickle. This is where i believe we feel the loss of Mayo the most. Cassillias is good but can he step up to where we need him to be against those zone runs?

If i was Seattle i would script 7+ runs and 2 play actions at least in my 1st 10 plays.

How do we stop that? Well that's up to Jones, Nink, Branch and Vince.

Bill could throw out a 3/4 look with Vince, Branch and Chris Jones up front and Chandler Jones, Nink, Hightower and Collins at LB. but that just weakens our Pass D.

It's a tough match up in my mind.

However we could stop the run successfully if we just play 1 Saftey most of the game and dare them to beat us on intermediate/deep throws 1 on 1. Risky... but can be done and i think this is where we will look to stop them. i.e with a 4-3 base and Chung in the box and Cassillias on the field creating an 8 man box and saying ok can your TE's beat Chung/collinc/cassilias in coverage and can you wr's beat Revis/Browner/Arrington with McCourty popping up to help each.

Use Collins to keep Wilson in the pocket. Stop the run. I seriously believe it is that simple. Wilson without the ability to run is a very ordinary QB.
I'm pretty sure if it was that easy the 49ers would have had more luck against the Seahawks. If they load up to try and contain lynch then Wilson will run and they will likely need Collins to help them stop the run

Would the pats run man coverage against a team like Seattle who really doesn't have many receiving weapons? This would seem like the team to play zone against

I think we've proven that we can play well vs. the read option in the past, as Belichick/Patricia have done well in hammering home the idea to stay home and carry out personal responsibilities. This was on display in the 2011 season vs. Tebow and Denver 2x in a month.

I also believe that stopping Lynch is an enormous part too.

I would think you may be right, although I'm sure we can expect some of both.

They can't really use Revis like they have most of the year, I suppose they could put him on Kearse, but what does that really do?

Yeah, either Kearse or Baldwin, I suppose.

I think that's a nice "problem" to have, though.

I actually think it's a bit of a problem as idk how the patriots plan on using their personnel. Their secondary has been obviously great all year but playing with a bunch of defensive backs doesn't seem like it would be worth it against a team like Seattle

I think we may see Browner come up and play the hybrid LB role a bit, in an attempt to help stop the run + help cover the TE.

I still expect a nickle defense a lot, but we'll have to see. The good thing is that we can adjust along the way, which is always a big Belichick coaching staple.

So you wouldn't feel less confident with the 2011 group of defensive backs?

I agree that GB would have been a better use of our DB depth but if we can shut down their passing game there is a good chance that we win the game if we score 24-28 points.

Did we even have any DB in 2011? More than anything else I wish that in this game we had some better LB depth

I think we could see a defensive game plan similar to the one we've used against the Jets. I am not equating Russel Wilson and Geno Smith. Anyone who has ever watched the two of them play knows there is no comparison in terms of skill. But they are similar in that they can both scramble, and that their offenses are both premised on an excellent running game (again, to be sure, the Seahawks' run game is way better than the Jets').

Since Seattle is run-based, I think we will see a lot of the heavy package with a DL of Wilfork, Siliga, and Branch, along with Jones and Ninkovich in the quasi-DL, quasi-LB role. I think the coaches will trust our DBs to take away the WRs. When the Seahawks are passing, the issue, as I see it, is how Wilson can keep plays alive for extended periods of time. Even against a great secondary, WRs will eventually get open. So I think we play a lot of contain on the edges with Jones and Ninkovich, and try to get good inside pressure with Hightower, Collins, and occasionally Ayers. Not a lot of blitzes, but when they come, they will come through the middle IMO. I think Arrington plays a lot less in this game.

I would think you would have a spy on their qb.

Nink and CJ would need to contain (although I do think there will be opportunities there for both of them to make plays)

Be physical, cause #BeastMode will be. Wear HIM down.

The secondary will need to have a fantastic game. Make their qb play from the pocket and force him into bad decisions, it can be done....

I expect the patriots to come out in a 5-2 with Vince on the nose, Branch and Silinga on either side, with Jones and Nink playing contain on the edges. I think the biggest advantage NE has right now is that most teams have LB's who are good in coverage around 240 lbs. Hightower is HUGE at 270 and as good as Beast Mode is he doesn't normally thump against guys bigger then he is. I would trust the four big guys in the middle to limit seattles run game to a reasonable non game winning amount. Lynch is too good to completly shut down but 20 touches for 80 yards and a TD won't win the game. Which leaves Wilson. Jones and Nink along with Collins and I'm assuming Chung (though the idea of Browner on the TE has some appeal) must must must play solid disciplined football and not let Wilson extend plays with his legs or gash them on the edges. Hit him when he has the ball and hit him when he doesn't, which is more difficult then it sounds as he is very smart when he runs and when he doesn't. Revis and Browner/Arrington with McCourty over the top can limit the WR's enough that I do not see the Seahawks putting up more then 20 unless Wilson gets out of the pocket extending a play until the coverage breaks down and hits a couple big plays. Every game you need to be disciplined and "do YOUR job" but I feel its especially true for this game. As long as the defense keeps contain and doesn't make mistakes they are more then good enough to bring home Lombardi number 4
