Please treat this with caution, I am making no claims tabout the reliabilities of the source. But...

BREAKING - Our source has CONFIRMED there will be NO penalties imposed on the Patriots by the NFL in the wake of deflategate.

This was re-tweeted by Mike Loyko. The source went on to say:

Official announcement is expected sometime over the weekend. NFL simply has no "proof" the Patriots themselves tampered with the balls.

NFL is not saying the balls were not tampered with, just that there is very little evidence against the Patriots.

This obviously ties in with Scheffer's reporting which is why I put it here but obviously it shouldn't be taken as definite.

The more this goes on, the silence of the NFL is deafening except for a few well placed "leaks" to the press...

My guess is that the refs did not check the balls, they never clarified what "2 pounds under pressure means" as that could range for 10.5 lbs to 11.5 lbs dependent on what they wanted to imply..

But of course I want to believe this. suspect Cassel, Hoyer, Guittierez and Malletts phones were ringing off of the hook last night along with Bill O'Brien, someone has to have something on these guys..

The further DeflateGate develops the more conniving, the more amateur and quite frankly, the more idiotic large factions of the media look.

Fancy inventing a fiasco with the potential to ruin the reputations of others to justify your existence. Pure scum.

I hate that its worded 'no proof". Gives the NFL an out, leaves the suspicion door open, and allows the millions of skeptics (haters) to still use it as fact.

For Christ's sake the guy who supposedly started this all doesn't even know how he is involved. This just reeks of sour grapes or something even more fishy. If I am Chris Mortensen, I am praying my source is correct, or he won't be able to report for a HS football league.

easy to say - and hard to do - but everyone should avoid ever clicking a link again from the "news"papers...

I'd say good job Goodell if he hadn't ****ing leaked every god damn detail to that prick mort. Kraft should demand an apology. For all Kraft has done for this league and time after time they treat him like ****. BB got Harbaugh his job and this is how he's repaid. Pathetic. BB should start reporting the little things these guys do.

Watched the kangaroo court of Felger and J. Mac this A.M. They had nothing but a firm conviction of BB's and TB12's guilt. Hope they are never on a jury deciding my fate. Why do so many in the local media want to slime what makes them relevant?

I read that one guy's well-reasoned post to the effect that they handed over the balls, the refs maybe squeezed one or two and gave them back, and that was (he reasoned) that. I.e., they got the balls to feel "right" by Brady's lights (and "right" might be underinflated,) but it's on the refs to assure the air pressure.

I was only reading that thread because the pressers yesterday were just flat-out confusing to me. Why would they hold them at all? It's not like you'll win just by screaming "I had no knowledge!" as fast as possible. BB and Brady, it would seem, have confidence that there wasn't in-game tampering.

If that's the case, the problem could be phrased as deliberately underinflating the balls they handed over to the ref, and this is where the NFL can depart from (i.e., go beyond) the rule itself. They can squeeze in a penalty on the Pats of some kind which would technically be by fiat, and also have some kind of "review" of how the balls are stewarded (which you know will happen in the off season).

Of course that's a big "if."

That's the thing. The presumption of innocence is a myth.

The media should be ashamed with their coverage of this. Freedom of Speech is wonderful right but these bastards have flatly abused their position when they should be getting to the bottom of the matter with good, investigative journalism. Instead, what does the industry collective do? They tie the noose and walk the Patriots onto the plank despite no evidence of impropriety to date.

I have said from the outset if the Patriots are guilty, they should be punished. The further this develops, the more convinced I become that money, clicks and PR is all that matters, not integrity and professionalism.

It's too bad that the national media hasn't shown the same concern for truth as this poster does.

Remember guys and gals this is the nfl and goddell were talking about. While this and schefters reports are encouraging, I won't be satisfied until an official ruling from the nfl comes out and clears the patriots. RG gets a boner when it comes to busting the patriots.

if everything will be over it means with a 'nothing', as i hope ,well ... I think the Pats will have another huge additional motivation for the Super Bowl

There is no way this ends with no punishment. Goodell will have to give the Pats something or the league will come under fire.

Sadly I have to agree with you.

No, actually he'll still retain his job where he is. Because, ironically , the very people who see themselves as the public's protectors of truth and accountability actually have no personal responsibility toward either.

Why not? We still have no facts. None. If it comes out that the drop in psi is perfectly reasonable and attributable to weather, why would there be a punishment?

So your saying if they have 0 evidence...they will still fine 25k or whatever it is? It's not the same but how can you convict a drug dealer if there no evidence etc.

If they find pats...they will have to give us the facts. If they have none will they make a story up,,?
