Can the Patriots stop Marshawn Lynch?

Not sure that we can take much from that 2012 team. Rush defense was a little better then (#6 in yards per attempt).
I have no doubt they can stop Lynch. They can stop anybody if they devote enough resources to it. The real question is, can they limit Lynch while still limiting Wilson's scramble ability?

If they go big with Vince, Siliga, and Branch in a 3-4 look, Wilson will break containment.

If they go smaller with two of the bigs and Jones/Nink as the DE's, it will be harder to stop Lynch.

I think the key either way is going to be the play of Collins and Hightower. Those two are going to have to play with some fire.

I think we need to play complementary football. Need to avoid the slow start on O that has often characterized this team. Getting a lead should help to limit the Seattle running game.

Of course they can. The real question is, can they stop Lynch without exposing themselves in other ways?

They held lynch to 60 yards against seattle in 2012.

Speaking of lynch, did anyone see NFL soundfx from the super bowl last year where lynch had a conversation with carroll In the 2nd or 3rd quarter that went like this (and lynch was not joking at the time):

Lynch: can we score more points?

Carroll (dumbfounded): huh? yeah we can score some more points

Lynch: can we? I just want to make sure.

Carroll: yeah yeah, it's ok, we can score more points. We're going to need them.

Great player, but doesn't sound like the sharpest tool in the shed.

lol what the hell? He's lucky he plays a position where he doesn't really need to be that bright.

For what it's worth, Heath Evans was just on NFL Network predicting a Seahawks win "and it's not even close"...... He thinks we can't stop Lynch because of the running plays they employ and other teams success when running those plays against us

It is going to be tough for our defense to stop lynch. The seattle o line does a great job of over powering defensive lines and linebackers.

Wilfork will get the double team because unger can not handle him one in one. But no one on our defense can handle carpenter one on one. And Britt can blow up ninkovich or jones at will. In other words I feel good about our ability to defend the A gap, but the B and C gaps Seattle should own.

To stop them, The linebackers have to bring the wood and can not take any bad angles or miss a tackle.

It will be a long day for us if Chung is making a bunch of tackles

Is Britt going to play?

No ... Pats can not do it .. Lynch is beastmode, and eats skittles .. and everyone thinks its cool..so no

They can limit him but it is going to be really difficult and they can't let up because Seattle won't stop running him and he gets stronger and stronger as the game goes on. I can see them going 3-4 with Siliga at NT and Wilfork and Branch as the ends with Hightower and Ninkovich inside and Collins and Jones outside. Fortunately their secondary can handle their receiving corps without having to go nickel or dime too often.

Good thread, nice to finally talk football.

Maybe. The RBs that have given the Patriots the most trouble have been behind O-lines that use a zone blocking scheme. Seattle doesn't.

That sounds like I'm expecting 43 yards or something. I'm not. Tedy Bruschi has said Marshawn Lynch is a tough runner. And I don't know a lot about what the Seattle o-line DOES do.

Unfortunately that Blount stat may be a tad misleading. Often his first contact is in the back field and he has to fight to get back to the line.
From the "Who's A-scared of Seattle?" thread:

Maybe people should be asking if the Hawks can stop LeGarrette Blount.

I doubt it, but I think they can limit him. I'm more worried about Wilson outside the pocket and his tendency to complete these 50+ yard passes in crunch time.

Yes we can with our dline. With our secondary just man up on kearse, Baldwin, and there TE. Revis will eliminate baldwin and Arrington can limit Kearse with browner holding the TE. Have McCourty over the top on the opposite side of Revis for protection. Have Chung play close to the LOS and dare them to throw.

It's actually misleading for the opposite reason. Blount isn't very good at fighting through early contact, but he'll plow over DBs like an overzealous uncle playing with his 8 year old nephews. Lynch, on the other hand, is difficult to bring down no matter where someone gets a hand on him.

I really hope that the pats d-line is better than it was against Baltimore. They really weren't tested against the Colts

Do you mean "untested?"

Bumping another substantive thread back to the top. We're on to the Superbowl.
