Schefter: NFL Having a Hard Time Finding Evidence of Tampering

Why?

Because the guy behind all this is THIS guy:

That's my point; the Pats--if exonerated, and that's still to be determined--really should go through some back channels to get some answers on stuff like this. I don't think they need to air it out in the open, hurt the 'shield' with more controversy (again, knowing Kraft is an NFL guy and doesn't want to do damage to the league reputation), but they do need to get a conversation going about this crap, because it's hurting his brand and his reputation and those of his employees.

I know I'll get flamed for this, but I'm trying to look at the facts, and they conclude what I suspected from the moment the report was broken about balls being underinflated.

I am guessing the Patriots/Brady found a way to underinflate the balls, not a big deal and probably something that has happened many times, but nevertheless against the rules. And as I suspected from the beginning, the NFL would not be able to find the smoking gun that proves the Patriots were involved. And, yes, there is a chance that they really weren't involved, however slim, in my opinion, which I don't present to be 100% accurate but just based on the information given and my own thoughts based on most likely scenarios. In other words, I think it is more likely that the Patriots were able to alter the balls than it is likely that the officials did not properly check the balls (considering the concern had previously been brought up), or that the weather had such a great effect, or that the Patriots were framed. More likely it was the Patriots, but not with 100% certainty.

The question becomes whether or not the NFL will punish the Patriots regardless of not having evidence and also using a "likelihood" analysis. It's unclear what burden of proof they will be using. I can almost guarantee you that later today, Tom Brady will tell the media that he likes the ball a certain way and submits that ball to the officials; if they choose to inflate the ball, deflate the ball, or fill it with maple syrup, he is, and always has, complied with the rules of the league, and frankly, it's impossible for him to alter the balls (he may even go through his pre-game protocol). So at that point, it comes down to reasonable doubt: was the deflation a result of faulty checking/weather/framing/bad protocols or something done afterwards. It is a dangerous precedent to decide this case based on "I believe the officials and I believe the balls could not deflate naturally, and I don't believe someone on the Patriots, although I don't know exactly who or how they did it." Although some may argue the integrity of the game comes first, I believe the integrity of common law is a higher standard and should be upheld by the NFL.

So, in conclusion, I suspect someone on the Patriots did in fact alter the ball but it cannot be proven, and yes, there is always reasonable doubt in anyone's mind. Certainly, it could have been deflated by some other way which we do not know. The court of public opinion will almost certainly favor the theory that the Patriots were involved, and I'm not sure I can really blame them, for better or worse. Luckily, I am used to having my favorite team be doubted and called cheaters, so it is really nothing new.

It might best for you to go to yesterday's USA Today (I don't know how to link) and read the article on just how hard it would be to "deflate" a football with the cooperation of a league employee in front of 70K fans and cameras blazing.

Then test your theories.

If you want a ball "out of spec"......it's very simple. Submit a ball at minimum psi (12.5) and then let physics work.

Besides, that actually brings up the most important point. Who set the minimum standards?

If the standard is 12.5 at room 2:15 minutes before the game, it's upon the league to include the effects of weather and temperature, use and duration to determine game pressure needed throughout.

That's part of setting minimum psi. If the league wants 12.5-13.5 through the game.....they need to measure through the game.

Substantiates my theory that the NFL had nothing from the onset...consider:

They release some info to a writer from Indy on Sunday who has vitriol for the pats...

Monday nite they release info to Mort @11:00 PM, so it can make the morning news...

The Colts notified the league after the 11/16 game.. if they knew about this malfeasance why did they waif for the AFC Championship game??..

Of course the Colts had their balls inflated to the correct pressure, they knew it was coming..

They have controlled the information in the court of public opinion, as they have no other way to pursue.. end result Goodell looks good.. people have made up their minds on the Patriots..

I think I'm still in shock that a deflated football is making this big of a story..especially when everyone admits it had no bearing on the game. And wow is it obvious in the media who hates the Pats and is reporting any little negative thing they hear. And it amazes me how all the current/ex players who have come out and said this is not a big deal even if it happened are just being dismissed. I seen on espn2 where they were interviewing a player who said this was no big deal to him and than was basically coached into saying yea it could make a big difference. Just sickening. Wish the nfl would release findings and any punishment if warranted so we can move on!

Funny thing yesterday.

Mazz was on 92.3 here in Cleveland talking about how BB needs to be executed because he is breaking the rules even though it's not proven.

Next comment is about the Jets tampering charges and how stupid it is because despite the fact it's a rule and was broken......it's Patriots fault for filing because it's a dumb rule.

Naturally, the two host clowns approve right away.

Squeaky Macaroni is a football know nothing who likes to double as the 'rebel' media whore. All in the name of ratings and protection of his favorite sport and team 'binkyball and the wed sox'

After "Spygate" the NEP engaged in a pillage-and-destroy mission to demonstrate their legacy's genuineness. I'm rooting for a similar display beginning the following Sunday

BTW - has anyone other than Mort confirmed the 2 lbs under report?

Baltimore and the Jets owners are involved somehow, according to three-source/story Glazer. No way those two use Irsay, a known dope, in whatever is going on. This may go beyond the Colts.

Now, normally when I say something like the above I reach for my tinfoil cap, not this time. If Glazer is a reliable source then why are they even remotely involved? This stinks of the Border War.

Harbaugh calling our trick play "illegal". So, obviously, they are not above whining about a loss. Just the Ravens being whiny and butt hurt.

Jets want revenge for the tampering charge against them. Still embarrassed over the Butt Fumble so want to stick it to the Pats as much as possible.

What is up with the "rival qb" sources or all the unknown sources....how can anyone even think of it as valid if their not willing to put their name to it? Speaking of putting their name to it I just have to say Aikman is a moron! That is all:)

I've aways had a lot of trouble believing a linebacker could feel ball deflation - that sounds ridiculous. Unless both Luck/Flacco keep theirs pumped way up, which could be true since they are slingers like Rodgers who might want the extra air. Question is, how would Balt/Indy know we keep it at the minimum otherwise? Anybody from our organization now in theirs, player or offensive coach-wise? Not that I can think of.

Or: is Glazer just FOS. Let's go with that.

Harbaugh is not invovled IMO (well. my guess) - the team Owner is. It's weird considering all the help Kraft gave to Baltimore in the Ray Rice thing.

I hope that the NFL is spending as much energy trying to find out who leaked the "info" of the investigation to "Mort", so they can fire them.
Roger Goodell is going to fire Roger Goodell?

I'm ready to see this published on espn

Holley said just the opposite, in fact he stated as fact that Harbaugh contacted the Colts and suggested they have the balls checked.
