Will There Be Backlash on Irsay and/or Pagano?

The rumors about teams being annoyed with the Colts, if more than a rumor, supports that this is a common practice throughout the league, though, it would appear that is already confirmed.

It also makes me wonder if Irsay more than Manning or Polian were the driving forces in prior rule changes. That organization has no issue whining when they feel something is wrong. They're always at the front of the line. It seems that much of the NFL keeps their mouths shuts about the dirty dirty that goes on behind the scenes.

^ with that said, I'm not saying we should get away with cheating if we did, but we currently seem to have an infinite amount of "professional" backers where the only ones crucifying us are media members.

This "deflategate" will now bring it into the spotlight forcing stricter regulations. Which is good for integrity but probably bad for the game itself.

I see it two ways, allow everyone to play with their preferred footballs so both teams get the "advantage" or force everyone to play with the same football so there is no advantage unless a player lucks into preferring that specification.

How big of a deal is it really? If everyone is playing with balls that they want then you can't complain about the ball your opponent is using. You have your preference. It also removes questionable integrity and prevents this from being an issue again, which would allow the league to never suffer another blemish from the situation.

I doubt there will be any backlash, publicly anyway. However, Mangini's phone ain't exactly ringing off the hook.

Not sure where you're getting this information? He went on to be another head coach for the Cleveland Browns after his job with NY, so your theory doesn't hold much water.

As I mentioned previously, he also has secured several other positions in the NFL since then, including the job that he currently holds with the SF 49'ers.

To take it one final step further, yes--he's currently being considered for the defensive coordinator job at SF, as the story broke yesterday. http://www.sacbee.com/sports/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/article7831803.html

They should just increase the range allowed, from like 11 to 15.

I don't like the idea of over regulation, just let them use a ball they prefer. Zolak said he doctored the balls for Marino and Bledsoe and this was all silly. You also have QB's with small hands that might need low psi balls, etc...

Yeah, wouldn't it actually make the game more competitive allowing preferred balls? You can't claim someone has an advantage because everyone gets to choose what they want. Rodgers likes big balls, others like little balls.

I thought I was done hating the Colts after Peyton left, but here I am.

The Lucks and the Mannings are very tight. It's possible that the Suck for Luck campaign was a joint effort.

If he worked for another team and went on to fail twice more, he wouldn't be as hot. Everyone wants even the smallest branches from the Belichick tree.

What I do not understand is that Pagano became "concerned" in their first meeting, why did it take 2 months for the NFL to do something?? Increase the drama??...

I used to like Pagano, but his Baltimore Thugs roots must have adversely influence him..

I guess we have different definitions of having your phone ring off the hook. After being the youngest coach in the NFL, he goes to unemployed, to not even being able to find a position coaches job. He finally gets a job doing the same entry level job he started at in 1996.

If some of the rumors are to be believed, didn't the Ravens tip off the Colts (and the NFL) to look at this, so that the Pats effectively walked into an ambush last Sunday? Shouldn't they be the ones suffering a backlash at this point?

Maybe, but Harbaugh refuted that. Maybe he's lying, and the unnamed source is telling the truth. If they did know about it, it's the worse sting operation I've ever heard. They could have just told a guy to watch the ball attendant, and had the refs squeeze the balls before they were brought into play to see if they felt low. To then play half the game with them and come away with no witnesses is like trying to catch a guy robbing a bank by checking your balance the day after its robbed.

And it's dirty pool to boot - if there's a harsh penalty here, this will be the 2nd time the Pats have been made an example of for something that was commonly practiced by most teams in the league. The NFL's goal isn't to fix the (minor) rule bending (they would have called the Pats and told them to knock it off if that were the case), but rather hide in the shadows and catch the Pats in the act of this heinous crime. Oh, and then leak some salacious details as the week goes on to whip the media into a frenzy too, just to make sure the franchise's reputation is dragged through the mud as much as possible. This is what the Commissioner is paid $40mil for...

because the nfl didn't care because its not a big deal. that's why other teams are pissed. Every game greenbay plays now is going to be scrutinized because "is rodgers using an over inflated ball?"

This is Irsay just being a whiny little *****, and the NFL having to do something because irsay made it public via leaking it to a beat writer.

"What If" this whole bs results on the rules changing back to what they were before: QBs no longer having the privilege to use their own footballs. Then wouldn't the Colts organization feel the backlash from all QBs in the league, even Luck. But then again everyone will still probably blame the Pats.

I don't think the reaction is universal, so in some cases this may help their cases, in others it may hurt.
Since I think it's petty and designed more to smear than to address competitive unfairness, I have a lower opinion of them, but of course I'm a Pats homer.

All I know is that next year when these two teams play the Pats aren't going to let up like they did this year. The final score will be something like 66-3 followed by the talking head's, heads exploding.
I was hoping for 100-0

Wouldn't it be great if the league/media started to go after crack head Irsay and his shenanigans. Didn't here much about the pharmacy on wheels and five figures in cash. Any Donnie dealer gets nailed on all sorts of felonies...Irsay?

On the other hand, look how well e. Magini has done since "Hey-Bud-your-camera's-in-the-wrong-place"-gate

Um, Fredo got another HC job, then a cushy E!SPN job, then different odd jobs.

I'm reading between the lines here, but I'm not even sure Pagano supports Grigson and Irsay's pursuit of this. DQwell Jackson showed Pagano the ball and Pagano didn't care. It was Grigson who got all up in a hissy over it.

Didn't Fredo blame - whats-his-name the former Jets GM?

Neither is Art Shell or that "We let'm off the Hook" guy. (They say names are the first to go in memory. :)) I think that may be because he sucked, not spygate.

According to Holley it was Harbaugh who told the Colts to check the balls, but that's probably because he doesn't have any. POS
