So many people(including me) do not even understand /grasp/know the actual rules on this , I don't think even the NFL themselves do . It is all from different sources and angles, and that is what happens if you make things ambiguous and leave them open for interpretation. But from the various stories of other NFL (ex) Players on this it seems to be that non off this is cheating to get an advantage. This is simply each QB/team being able to work the ball in such a way it feels good to them to play with. IF it were equal for all it would NOT be because those players that prefer the feel of whatever the one and only official measurement is would be at an advantage. It is not like they had an explosion device in the ball that punctured it while thrown so it was easy to catch or some weird stuff like that.

Unless there is concrete tamper evidence, the way I see it is that the game balls were prepped before the game , tested with Brady and perhaps other players. Most likely this is done by gut/feel. Everybody happy? Yes ? Ok deliver them to referees who either did not check them at all or measured them incorrectly. Or the balls were at bear minimum allowed. The colts either made the average or perhaps over inflated theirs , same thing according to what their players like. And all is not checked in and good to go. If you receive balls from Luck they will feel different then the ones measured up for Brady. So someone says , hey they feel "soft" Refs check , now properly or perhaps for the first time and notice they are out of the minimum range and take them out of the game. NE continues to destroy anyway. On top of that as I mentioned if NE has theirs at minimum levels and Indy does not it could cause NE balls to be under the value over time.

In all cases we still are only left with these facts (s0 far)

a) There is NO proof of tampering happening
b) The rules state clearly that ref's ( NFL) inspects the balls before the game
c) refs handle the ball pretty much every snap
d) Corrections were made, and nothing changed in the balance of the game

As it stands now , none of this is cheating, again unless there is proof of tampering. And I know preaching to the choir and we are guilty no matter of what ever proof will sate otherwise to some, but come one ... how pathetic is this whole ordeal ...really?

The fact that idiots like Mortenson can hide behind "anonymous sources" to avoid a law suit and over do stories for views/page hits is total lunacy.

Rapsheet and Dean Blandino (who is the key name here) both said ONE BALL got taken out of circulation and Blandino said this is a fairly regular occurrence and the BALL is what gets investigated.

Here's probably what the investigation is:
NFL: Has the ball been sabotaged? Y/N
Answer: N
Outcome: Hand the ball to Wilson for some QA

Answer: Y
Outcome: In what way? Who by? Culprit gets fined

This thing is all fishy from the nfl. If a football was under inflated 2lbs you would know. It's not something that can be mistaken. Refs had to notice if it was under inflated. My guess if they didn't, something happened to them from being stored or they changed due to the weather.

Right. and also, they are saying the balls were deflated AFTER the refs inspected them.
HOW could this happen without observation?
The ball guy dumps the 12 balls out of the bag and begins deflating each one. He has gauge so he knows
when they are 12 lbs or whatever. After each one he puts it back in the bag. So no one sees him doing this?
They say they were all 2 lbs so there had to be something like a gauge to get them all the same.
Or maybe he took the whole bag into the locker room and deflated them there. In any case,
there were cameras all over that place. There should be video of this event somewhere.

I really don't believe Belichick is this stupid. I think the Patriots need to fight back hard on this and they need to start soon in doing so.

Not calling him stupid by any means. But, as Vinatieri said, Belichick looks for a competitive advantage in any way that he can get it. Hopefully he's not implicated in this but, if he is, it honestly wouldn't surprise me.

Broncos fan here:

I believe everyone is making too big a deal about this. I believe every team tries to gain as big a competitive advantage as they can. This takes me back to the old sport adage "If your not cheating, you're not trying" Regardless if this was done or not I believe every team in the NFL are involved in some form of cheating one way or the other. (Its called being competitive) Don't let other teams fan or the media get you down. I am an AFC fan so I will be rooting for you guys in the Super Bowl.

Bottom line is the seattle has a huge advantage going into this game. They can just focus on football while NE has to worry about all this.

and the Hernandez trial. Kraft and Belichick were called in as witness, correct?

My personal favorite response to all of this:

"But now is not the time for sense. Now is the time for screaming, and settling old scores, and reveling in a scandal that's goofy but genuinely revealing of the tenuous web of gentlemen's agreements that allows the NFL to even function. The fractally expanding rulebook is impossible to follow to the letter, so players and teams and officials have carved out an unwritten shadow rulebook, with its own, more realistic bounds of acceptability. Linemen are allowed to get away with a modicum of holding. The Seahawks secondary can commit pass interference on every single play. Tom Brady can **** with his footballs. The NFL's existence is predicated on winks and nods, and it's hilarious (if worrying) that the whole thing can collapse thanks to one bitter team appealing the letter of the law." -

Barry Petchesky

Reminds of my days back in the Navy. It is literally impossible to do your job and always follow the letter of the law.

For example, if your bilge were overflowing and you needed to get the water levels down and didn't have an approved device to pump the oily water into, well that was the time to test the operation of the eductor.

The officers knew what was going on and turned a blind eye to it, but OFFICIALLY they would hold you accountable if something went wrong.

I remember many a day when I left the ship and headed for home while observing a beautiful sunrise reflecting off the rainbow-sheened water.

They're doing what the media does: trying to make something that really isn't that big of a deal into a big deal.

Colts are and always have been a bunch of whiny ****ies. I find tweets from those cupcakes(so called players) about replacing NE just hilarious.

if the ball boys are hired by the NFL then how could any of this not fall completely on the shoulders of the NFL/Refs.

Every wonder what would happen if it wasn't the 2 weeks of the year where every NFL writer is desperately looking for a story?

I mean, perfect timing. There are millions of empty columns, everyone is craving football news, and there is nothing to report until the actual Superbowl. Very bad timing.

This is far less damaging than Indi keeping the heat high and pumping in noise during the 06-07 playoffs. Come on and I never complained about that. Such is life in sports. Winners overcome or take their losses like men while losers complain.

Could you imagine how badly the Colts running D would get smoked if they "substituted" NE in the SB? Lynch would run for 350+ yds on them.

V-necking your balls.

Possibly. But I do remember NE curbstomping the Chargers a week after Camergate broke.. Granted, Seattle is a better team than that Chargers team was, but this Patriots squad could very well view this as a motivator rather than a distraction.. Not saying they will, but offering an alternative point of view...

And if Seattle wins, it's gonna be because their D comes to play and because we can't stop Lynch and Wilson from running all over us, not because of some story about deflated footballs.

I remember that game as well. I don't remember if the Chargers were at the level of the current Seahawks, but the Chargers were a very strong team that year and we curb-stomped them.

Sports Hub says Mortensen has more details? Anyone heard them yet?

Why would Belichick be involved? This would be between Brady & the equipment people. And again, there's no way Tom Brady is looking at a PSI read-out. So it really comes down to the equipment people probably doing what they were trained to do their whole life - get the ball to the comfort level the QB wants, ignore the details.

The problem is, thanks to the superb handling of the Commish, epic mountains have once again been made out of mo-hills.
