This makes all the difference in the world if true. At least in terms of how I view this whole thing. It's one thing if, intentionally or not, they were given to the officials at a certain inflation level or if they were surreptitiously deflated after the officials examined them.
IMO 11/12 is good news. That means when they were given to officials before the game they were underinflated and officials just didn't notice/care. The onus is then on them, not Patriots.

It took the NFL 2 full days to test a dozen balls for air pressure??? Something is fishy here...

If someone just deflated them in game then it feels like the 11 would be all different weights.... would be hard to keep them all the same....

Well, they are suggesting the air was removed during the game by the ball boys.

No it isn't. That would be hard to defend.

If the balls were in fact lowered due to temp, why has this never been brought to the attention of refs before? Surely, this would have happened in another cold weather game

This distraction is awful going into the SB

considering how goodell hates BB,I hope they dont take extreme steps and go overboard after the ray rice fiasco.

Who is the "they"? The league or media, etc.? I'm not sure how a ball boy could deflate 11 balls during the course of the game in front of everyone given the balls are pretty much under strict supervision.

And 299/300 balls Rodgers threw at Lambeau Stadium over the past 2 years have been OVER-inflated.

Advantage --> Rodgers. Result? ZERO interceptions.

But nobody cares! Pretty sure that nothing happened to the Vikings for heating up balls this year either.

Right. If the refs tell investigators that the balls were at 12.5 PSI when handed in, and if the NFL investigators took the 10.5 PSI measurement at room temp, that is no good.

Am I missing something, how is this not the ref's responsibility?
It is, the rules say you cant alter the football AFTER the refs ok them, according to Peter King the officials hold on to the balls until a couple minutes before kickoff. The most likely answer here is no one really gives a rats ass about the balls except anal retentive types like Peyton and Aaron Rodgers so the teams and the refs don't inspect every ball before the game, if it feels ok and is official it probably gets put into the ball bag.

Reiss:
In @mortreport story on 11 under-inflated footballs, one source described NFL as "disappointed, angry, distraught."

Oh boy.

I wonder what sort of stress a player like Blount falling on the ball 30 times exerts.

Yeah, I honestly feel that this is ********. They need to show me proof of the balls being deflated BEFORE the game, not after a rather drastic temperature change and the beating they took DURING the game, you know, this countries most violent sport.

Where the ball is squeezed tightly.
Spiked into the ground.
Punched.
Fallen on by 250lb bodies all game.

You show me the ball pre game and I'll say we ****ed up, you only show me the post-game numbers and I'm not going to buy in too deeply.

There are WAY too many variables for me to take this seriously.

Personally, if BB is responsible, he should be punished...hashly.

Finding gray areas is one thing, blatantly breaking the rules is another.

This was dumb and deserves harsh punishment. If he is fault he just gave us an unnecessary black eye for no god damn reason. So ridiculous.

Part of the investigation that still needs further vetting is how the 11 footballs became under-inflated. The game balls provided to each team for preparation were required to be inspected and approved by referee Walt Anderson two hours and 15 minutes before kickoff before they were returned to each team. No alteration of footballs is allowed once they are approved, under league rules and regulations.

The balls are required be inflated between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds per square inch and weigh between 14 and 15 ounces.

"We have been in complete cooperation with the league and will continue to do so," said Patriots spokesman Stacey James.

This pisses me off to no end.

Why the hell do we always have to push the ****ing rules. Especially against inferior opponents.

In the large scheme of things the PSI in the balls doesn't effect much, but now we once again have to deal with the god damn perceptions?

Seriously Bill, stop with this ********.

Normally I could care less and encourage cheating lol.. But man Bill brings this crap onto himself.. why?? Now its 2 weeks of this.. Perception is greater than reality..

lets hope they let BB coach the SB.

Right. If the refs tell investigators that the balls were at 12.5 PSI when handed in, and if the NFL investigators took the 10.5 PSI measurement at room temp, that is no good.
Yeah, if they can prove this, it's pretty indefensible.
