I have been a long time lurker and reader of this fantastic board and know most of you regulars well (I look forward to Ken's and Rob's weekly posts, etc). I have been a fan since 2nd grade in 1993. While I read this board constantly, I do not post much. You can see by my join date just how long I have been on here....Please pardon my terrible writing.

I have finally been compelled to start a thread, and what finally did it was moving to Seattle a year ago and going through two seasons of Seahawks out here. I was born and raised in Central Mass, but moved here for work. And I was recently home on business. Here are some observations...

1. Seattle fans LOVE their team in the most positive way:
People here are generally friendly and enjoy good football. Throughout the season, there was an optimism that I have not seen in NE. I mean, this team was 6 and 4 at one point in the season and looking up at Arizona (three games back) and were nowhere in the wildcard hunt. They were struggling offensively. Nevertheless, everyone wore their Number 12 jerseys every Friday to work, everyone smiled and enjoyed the games, everyone cheered on the team during the worst of games. There is a certain amount of unconditional love here. I see unconditional love in NE as well, but the fans there are more like an old grumpy demanding patriarch of a family, where they love and would die for a family member (i.e. patriots team), but would have no problem cussing them out and screaming at them when they feel emotional for whatever reason.
Let's say Seattle loses an away playoff game (or the superbowl), the city will be disappointed, yes, but there will still be 1000s of people at SeaTac airport to greet the team's plane and thank them for an amazing ride. In NE, the talk would be about the end of the Brady era, who should get fired, and how worthless and a bunch of losers the team is.

2. Seattle fans are united.
As I said, EVERYONE wears Seattle gear every Friday to work (even hospital employees where I work). The skyscrapers are lit up with number 12s everywhere. There are number 12 signs in every store window and number 12 flags on every car. There is a giant number 12 flag that gets raised over the space needle before the game and that flag travels to the superbowl! Now, yes, a lot of this is bandwagon since last year, but the bandwagoners out here are not d*cks. And the diehards welcome the bandwagoners without getting all self-righteous about it. The bandwagoners in NE are the worst type of fans. They pretend to be know-it-alls and then make ridiculous comments about the team, whether it be overconfidence vs catastrophizing everything. The game day thread here is kind of an example.

3. Seattle fans are quietly confident while maintaining a healthy respect for the opponent.
There is a quiet confidence out here. This could be a good thing or a bad thing. What I mean is that Seattle fans are enjoying this run, vs many patriots fans (myself included) are crapping their pants during every game. As awesome as that Baltimore game was, I almost threw up many times during that game and do NOT want to see another game like that again. I mean it was AMAZING, but I can't say I enjoyed every second of it (is that normal???). Seattle fans have savored every moment this year (and last year). Moreover, most people are very much respecting Green Bay and there was a lot of respect for Carolina last week.

4. Seattle sports talk radio is actually good.
This is what actually was the impetus to me posting. I was listening to talk radio out here (and I stream the radio at home). The radio guys are just like the fans! They are excited and enjoying the Seahawks! There is no axe to grind against the team. There is no "we will roll over Green Bay." There is balanced football analysis of the weaknesses of the team (they do exist) like the offensive line and the receivers, while still maintaining a healthy sense of homerism. I mean, I don't think there is a Shaugnessy type or a Felger type out here. They debate statistics and genuinely analyze strengths and weaknesses. And they appreciate any win! Seattle beat Carolina 13-9 in October. Talk radio was mostly positive the next day. If we beat a team 13-9, there would be nothing but talk about the crappy offense! Similarly, Seattle beat SF 17-7. All positive talk while genuinely acknowledging weaknesses. There is NOTHING but positivity heading into tomorrow's game on the radio out here, while in Boston, it's either "Pats will wipe them out tomorrow and if we don't, and if they don't, they're garbage" or "Our offensive line sucks, there is no pass rush, D gave up 30 points last week, Andrew Luck is due to go off!"

Boston sports culture is very deeply rooted in history (15 years without championship; Red Sox curse; 18-1, etc). But I think it's a bigger New England culture to be demanding, pessimistic, egotistical, and (sometimes) just plain idiocy. Maybe an East Coast West Coast thing. It has been a tough adjustment out here. I tend to be quiet and shy in general, but out here, I'm considered a total a** hole! I don't follow the lights when crossing the street (NO ONE J WALKS HERE!) and I don't make small talk with the barista or the bus driver. Whatevs.

Thoughts?

Is Seattle in line for the 2024 Olympics?

;)

.

Solid post op. Start posting more. Ya Im not really sure. I'd like to blame it on the weather but nothing is worse than Seattle. Its probably the media market around here which manipulates the consumer to no end. I also blame the Red Sox for 86 years of suckery.

I've been to SEA many times on business. Love the city. Restaurants. Bars, etc. Great all around.

Sounds like the episode of Seinfeld when Elaine becomes friends with Bizarro Jerry, George and Kramer.

From what I hear, Seattle is a wonderful, clean, progressive city.

It's a completely different culture from Boston.

Kind of like the difference between a loud Jewish/Irish/Italian family dinner and a Norwegian family dinner. Just different ways of communicating.

Great thread. I agree, and one of my first threads on this forum was after the 2011 Superbowl loss, where I ripped into the culture of Boston baseball and how I thought it affected our football fanbase negatively.

There's a lot to be said for Seahawk fans that aren't just riding their bandwagon. They're strikingly similar to Patriot fans in 2003 and 2004 (at least IMO). Their journey has just begun. I think every fan base is molded by their sports-experiences, and ours is no different.

If I was going to attempt to document the history of the Patriot fan after 2001, it would go something like this:

2001 ~ 2006: Happy, enthusiastic optimists.

2007: The disrespected Dynasty, F*** everybody, F**** you're whole team, F*** the entire league. We'll blow everybody out. We are superior, you are rodent peasants, and oh ya, Manning F***ing sucks. Come get some.

2008: WTF

2009 ~ 2011: Yay! Brady is back. Happy, enthusiastic optimists again, only with the 2007 gene.

2012 ~ 2013: FML. Nothing goes our way. Nothing

I don't think I've been shy about sharing my disdain for Boston Sports culture, but I blame a lot of that on Red Sox culture, which I can't really stand. That's where the people mostly reside that are quick to say we should trade anyone who has a bad game, demand everyone be fired, and start throwing the pride of our Patriots under the bus for small infractions or one bad throw. It's something small town Patriot Nation just seems to unfortunately be stuck with...

Give Seattle a few years. If they keep up with the direction they're headed in, which is sustained dominance in the NFC, they'll eventually pick up our 2007 gene as well.

yeah...heh...Seattle is SO much more progressive and enlightened than Bahston big mouths...why, just ask the Duwamish...

For 500 generations they flourished until newcomers came... much was lost; much was devalued, but much was also hidden away in the hearts of the dispossessed. Their voices insist upon a hearing and the cumulative wisdom of their long residence in this land offers rich insights to those willing to listen. The challenge now is to find a way to make knowledge of the ancient traditions, the experience of change and the living reality accessible and available.

People who look down on YOU for being YOU are nothing more than bigots. I've been to Seattle numerous times going all the way back to the early 70's when I was researching Jimi Hendrix's life. I've got cousins who have moved there from Maine and established careers with families. I live here in R.I. because I LOVE living here. Why THAT subjects me to THIS garbage is puzzling..

But I think it's a bigger New England culture to be demanding, pessimistic, egotistical, and (sometimes) just plain idiocy.

You live in a place where the **** Shermans and Marshawn Lynches of the NFL are idolized yet you have the unmitigated gall to cast THOSE aspersions on US here? If you haven't got the guts to wear your Pats gear in public and stand up for yourself when people treat you like an "outsider" you should move or assimilate into the local "superior" lifestyle.

Yes, by all means, post more. What was stopping you in the first place, fear of drawing a reaction? Time to put your big boy pants on and BE what you say you are ...a fan of THIS guy..

I have the complete opposite reaction to Seattle "fans". I've lived here forever and before 2 years ago nobody cared. Now everyone is on the bandwagon again because they're suddenly relevant. They're loud, obnoxious, and in your face. Idk how many times I was told they were gonna "kick my ass" in 2012 for wearing my brady jersey. The 12th man is a joke ripped off of Texas AM. Respecting the opponent? Most of them this week are acting like they're playing tampa bay and not green bay. I hope we meet in the SB and we beat the piss out of them.

ive never been to seattle but i will say this...

if the hawks win the next 2/3 superbowls (wont happen IMO)...maybe their expactations will rise as well

meaning maybe back in 2002/2003 boston fans were more like what you are describing seattle fans are right now

Nobody has a monopoly on civility, asshatishness, loyalty or fickle bandwagonism. I'm sure there's plenty of obnoxious loudmouth blowhard types who live in Seattle and/or are Seahawks fans just as there are probably plenty of low-key positive-optimistic types who are Boston sports fans. But stereotypes will always begat stereotypes.

It is amazing to me how similar this year for Seattle is to our 2003/2004 run. That year, we traded Milloy, we got shut out by the Bills in the first game, "They hate their coach" happened, and we started 2 and 2. Subsequently, our wins (some of which were against mediocre teams) were scores like 17-6, 19-13 in overtime, 9-3, 12-0, on the way to a 14 and 2 season with a superbowl! Because of the crappy wins and the previous 9-7 non-playoff year which made everyone think 2001 was a fluke, we were totally under the radar ALL year!!! Non one talked about us until about week 10! I remember enjoying it so much and just thinking "wow, we are quietly having a SOLID season, and NO ONE nationally knows it!" The Seahawks this year started out with a bunch of injuries, and were 6 and 4 at one point. That's 6 and 4! Playoffs were not even necessarily in the discussion 10 weeks into the season! They have since rolled off 6 six wins to finish the season, many of which were UGLY to the finest. And they're peaking at the right time. The main difference is they still have a target on their back as defending champs, but I'll be honest, I counted them OUT mid season! I even talked a little smack with some co workers (imparting my hard earned knowledge of what fanhood takes during a defending year).

The difference here is Red Sox fans love complaining and *****ing about players. I honestly believe a lot of them would be happier if they never won the World Series so they could carry on about their stupid curse.

This is probably why Boston sports media is so unbearable.

Felching Felger (midwest vermin), Tim "Buns" Benz, the Steeler azzpimple...our media is unbearable because we allow people with agendas airtime to promote THEIR thinly veiled contempt for US, native New Englanders who live work and play HERE. Good Lord there's a "teacher" with a show on Saturday mornings that BRAGS about being a turncoat Red Sox----> Yankee fan.

You can chill out there, Chief. I'm a product of Worcester public schools and still consider that city my "home." I also happen to be a person of color in an industry where there aren't many of us, and have traveled enough to know bigotry is everywhere, not least of which, New England. Maybe more visits elsewhere can reduce your sphincter tone a little ;-).

And yeah, I wear my pats gear all the time, and get looks and "we'll kick your ass" often, but it all seems to be good-natured...which actually brings to me this:

Seattle fans are somewhat wussies (avoiding a sexist word here)...
Last year, night before NFC championship game against SF, I was out at a bar, and a bunch of SF fans in town for the game walked in in their gear. There some ribbing back and forth, some trash talking, occasional annoying yelling, but it all seemed to be good natured and fun. In 2004, I was walking in Cambridge evening of game 5 of the ALCS, and a car with New York plates and Yankee stickers with a bunch of guys in Yankee gear drove slowly by asking various people directions to Fenway. They had clearly gotten off at Exit 18 off the pike by mistake (easy to do for out of towners). First response by pedestrian: "F**** you! Yankees suck!". Next response: "Keep driving motherf*****!" The next response was a can of coca cola poured over the windshield and hood of their Acura. And I absolutely loved it!

I actually think the Pats would destroy Seattle in the Superbowl. Everyone else thinks we're doomed, but I think they're pretenders who haven't played a single snap of relevant football since their game against the Dallas Cowboys in week 6, which they lost.

I also heard an interesting stat today, which is that the average QBR of the quarterbacks they've faced is like 52.

Fools gold thriving off an easy schedule, Arizona's QB misfortunes, and a 7-8-1 Carolina playoff team?

so basically they are cub fans, but with a recent title
