Firstly ,,Greetings and Salam to all here. With all the excitement for this Sunday's BIG Game ,,maybe this isn't the best time to discuss this,,but my head is killing me to know !
After the stupid comment made by Mr Lewis about the Tuck rule and about Tommy, i went and watched that play over and over again for maybe 20 times.
Please kindly give me your opinion about the play whether Tom was hit in the head ,,i.e. the Helmet by Woodson,,before the ball came off his hand. I do not know if this has been discussed before and i am sure nobody here ever wrote about it. You see i don't even know if the blow to the QBs helmet was even a rule that year but to me ,,,the play should have been called for a 15 yard Penalty against the Raiders,,,Tuck rule or not.
I have seen less contact to the helmet called so many times in the last 3 seasons.
Thanks to all for your opinion ,,and may we rechoice Inshallah { God Willing} our Team's 8th Super Bowl appearance. GO PATS

Woodson definitely hit him the head and should've been flagged. In my opinion, that hit is the only reason Brady lost the ball in the first place.

At the time I was surprised they didn't call Brady for tripping on the play. After he lost the ball he attempted to trip one of the Raiders players that was going after the loose ball.

You're absolutely right. If you pause this video at 3:06 and 4:22 he CLERARLY swats Tom's helmet. I remember screaming that at the time, but then it went to reveiw, and I was screaming that his arm was going forward (which it was). I'd forgotten about that. Good call.

Man, never saw that video before. Never heard the bit about Allen overhearing the play. Nice to hear Coleman say it was an easy call. Thanks for the video. Also .. .what a freaking kick.

LOL! Good one!!

I believe that a blow to the head WAS a penalty back then, and I just said the same thing on another thread the other day. Woodson clocked him upside the head - that's what caused the fumble.

I'll never forget the feeling I had, even after all these years, when Walt Coleman started to speak and said that the QBs arm was going forward. We knew right then that he was going to reverse it.

It's funny how the victim of that call was a team that lived by the motto of "if you ain't cheatin' you ain't tryin' and now they're crying about a call that was totally legit. And here we are still talking about it more than a dozen years later. I kind of enjoy that after all of the crap that Oakland got away with over the years.

Btw, the person most responsible for calling this the Tuck Rule game was Jim Nantz, who was almost in tears about it after the game. He came across as a Raider fan.

Walt Coleman is my hero.

The thing about this that gets me is that the ball never even stopped its motion. It was clear cut incomplete according to the tuck rule.

BUT if you read the rule closely, it allows for an incomplete even IF the ball stops its motion (as long as you don't tuck it into your body or recock your arm). in other words, there were instances when the tuck rule was invoked when it wasn't anywhere near as clearcut as this.

And that's why the referee said it was an easy decision.

In defense of the Raiders' fans, given the timing of that game in history, that game marked the beginning of a fairly bleak history. Next year, make it to the show against the former coach (ie., "we would have won it all with him" - Gruden won it all the next season) from 2001 and get whupped badly (they lost 28-13 to the Rams the next season, so highly unlikely the Raiders beat the Rams if they played in 2001). Fall into a 12-year span of despair, during which your team is frequently used as a personnel resource for the team you lost to in 2001 (thank you for Randy Moss et al Al Davis). Something has to be blamed, so this is as good an event as any.

I never liked the tuck rule and I am glad that it was repealed.

Yet I will never understand people who insist that the refs ignore rules as they are written, just because "it doesn't look right to me".

Apply this to the tuck rule game , but the same goes for the Dez Bryant catch/no catch.

The ref has to follow the rules, as they are written. It is not a judgement call.

If the call seems to be a travesty, then re-write the rule in a new and yet completely definitive way and by all means don't give the official leeway to make a judgement call.

If the Raider faithful want to crow about the "tuck rule" playoff game, I'd quickly remind them of the Ben Dreith travesty that we suffered in the 1976 divisional playoff game.

I have no doubt in my mind, and from what I have seen many people agree with me, that if the Pats would have gotten past the Raiders in that game, they would have beaten Pittsburgh in the AFCCG, and probably mauled the Vikings in SB 11.

It was great to hear Walt Coleman also explain why it was called a fumble in the first place. If they called it an incomplete pass it would not have been reviewed. The refs were instructed to make the calls that way.

The Pats were stacked that year. Top 5 Patriot team talent wise all time. They got SCREWED, period.

That season the Pats beat the Squeelers in Pitt and pounced the Traiders 48 - 17

1976 should have been SB victory number 1

Actually, someone needs to forward that to Mr. Lewis. The people read the rule out loud! They ref correctly ruled on the play and the call was correct.

After this, maybe someone could find a video on the rule of murder and pass that on to Mr. Lewis as well….

the tuck rule does not even come close to enough karmic retribution for the raiders. what they got away with against all teams and darryl stingley specifically....i hope they continue to rot in football hell for eternity.

I agree. I actually remember this night and this game better than I remember the Superbowl. For the Superbowl I only remember where I was watching it, the last drive, and the field goal. Most of the rest of it is kind of just a blur of people.

The game against Oakland I remember the entire night. It was snowing just as hard here as it was at Gillette and I was driving through it to get my girlfriend and bring her back to my house for the game, who was taking way too long, so the 1st quarter I was listening to it in the radio w/ Gino while trying not to crash into oncoming traffic.

Everything about that season was fantastic, but that game was especially great, because even with the Favre v Bledsoe Superbowl, playoffs weren't really something to be expected back then, much less playoff wins.

There was a guy at our little Superbowl fiesta *****ing the entire time about Bledsoe not being in lol.

There's this movie, Willow, and we must of watched it earlier in that week or something, but there's a scene in it when this dude is yelling at Val Kilmer, "NOT A WOMAN!? NOT A WOMAN!?.

When the Tuck Ruling came down, my buddy starts yelling "NOT A FUMBLE!? NOT A FUMBLE!?"

rofl

Brady running through the snow for that rushing touchdown was epic.

It was like "Who the hell is this kid?" lol

Then it was off to get our asses kicked by the Steelers, only not instead.

It's easy to forget how awesome that season was now that we just basically embarrass everybody and Tom Brady is `future 1st ballot Hall of Famer Brady` instead of the scrappy comeback kid.

Thinking back to the Tuck Rule game is like thinking back to a great Christmas. Has all the same warm wintery wonderland vibes. Love it.

I think there are two interesting observations about all of this....

1) The NFL defended the use of the tuck rule in that playoff game

And 2) Ben Dreith was banned from officiating any Patriots games for more than a decade after he screwed the Pats.

Hmm... go figure.
