It's called "merchandising." The team wants to sell as much stuff with the Patriots' logo, name, and colors as possible. What better way to stimulate a market than to have their most popular player wear something during a game. If all they sold was Flying Elvis logo gear, the market would be limited. Selling Pat Patriot gear in addition to Flying Elvis gear broadens the market. If you already have a Flying Elvis knit hat, you probably won't buy another Flying Elvis knit hat, but you may buy a Pat Patriot knit hat. Capiche?
