If you were a Ravens fan....

All in all, as a Pats fan, I would look on the Ravens as being the team most likely to be the biggest AFC threat to a Pats team I believe will be significantly better next year.

Who are you saying will be significantly better next year -- Pats or Ravens? If it's the Pats, why?

Ravens fan here. OK, Ravens fans are hurt and disappointed, no doubt. It stings, just like you would feel if the Pats lost. Your team played a great game of catch-up and win. However, we are very proud of how the Ravens played. Except for a bad Flacco/Torrey Smith pass play at the end, Baltimore was in position to win. If I were a Pats fan I would be very worried about your team and not bragging about beating the Ravens. You barely beat a team (in your house) with 18 players on IR (while you had a healthy roster for once), including our number 1 CB out, our number 1 TE out, secondary demolished, and really, no elite WRs on the team. This is what Joe had to work with and no team could ask for more points prior to the start of the game from a QB. Most people on this board thought the Pats were going to destroy the Ravens. Imagine when our FO fixes the secondary and receiver issues. Patriots won because of Tom Brady, no other QB could have done what he did. Your vaunted defense looked terrible against Flacco - and this is a defense we heard was the best in years, therefore Ravens fans were worried. I wish you "luck" against the Colts. They certainly are reviewing what worked for and against your team last Saturday.

yawn....Pats are missing their defensive captain (Mayo) and starting RB (Ridley), WR (Dobson) and DT (Easley), and CB (Dennard) but nope, the Pats don't know what its like to lose anybody to IR. Don't forget that their starting center was knocked out in the game. 18 players doesn't mean anything....its all about the quality of the players lost and the Pats lost some big ones but you don't see BB worry since he is fairly good at managing a roster. The reason the Pats one is because they don't wilt and since when has Brady used the fact that he doesn't have any elite WRs as an excuse for not being able to put up 30. Pats don't need luck when they have the mental edge.

Just like Harbaugh was penalized at the discretion of the refs for running out on the field.
normally, when defenses get caught flat-footed, the coach calls a time out but Harb decided to run on the field instead. Maybe he forgot that he could call a time out.

I think both teams will be significantly better. Of course there are some assumptions that have to made.

Here are the Pats assumptions
1. All or most of our own FA's are resigned. Revis and McCourty are musts
2. Dobson becomes a healthy and productive WR
3. Easley comes back healthy and more explosive
4. At least one of Moore or Buchannon develop well enough to become an effective #3 DE
5. BB successfully continues the interior OL rebuild and we upgrade at least one of the OG's through FA or the draft.

Here are the Ravens assumptions. Its smaller because I don't know the team as well.
1. There OL injuries will ultimately give them more depth and experience at the position next season
2. They need to continue to get younger
3. Get back all their injured DB's

Right, as of this moment the Pats are a few pieces on the OL and DL away from being a very deep and talented team. If we get most of the important pieces back, I think we can fill those needs this off season. Its not like we have a bad OL, just not a great one, but I don't think we are far away. Its not like we have a bad DL, but I'm hoping that Easley can give us an interior push we didn't have this year, and the if Buchannon, Moore, and Dobson all develop closer to their potentials, we will be deeper on the DL and WR.

Then if that talent can form the kind of cohesive mentally tough team like this year's will have a great chance to be even better

I think the Ravens will also improve but not to the level of our team. mostly because they have no Gronk, and we will have more overall top to bottom depth. But they are the team I would project to replace Denver as our biggest threat along with the Colts who will continue to get better as well.

Please understand this is superficial overview. Lots of things can change by next July

You're right, we should be a little concerned. I've been this entire playoffs and will be for the rest of it because our interior o-line is very weak and our left tackle is average. Your 18 players on IR, from what I understand most of the problems were in the secondary. Our o-line can't hold up to allow for any play action deep throw. The 1st play after Flacco's interception could have been 6 if the o-line held up.

Imagine when our FO fixes our o-line issues. I think the score would be similar, don't you think? ;)

OK. This is the first year in a long time that we shouldn't say "Well, next year should naturally get better because we're entitled to better injury luck." As for age/youth/etc.:
  • QB can be expected to decline a bit.
  • RB could go downhill a bit due to re-signing challenges. Nothing major, however.
  • Dobson and Wright improving might more than offset the likely loss of Amendola. We'll see.
  • OL should be better, assuming Connolly is re-signed, as Stork and Fleming mature, and perhaps a high pick is used on OL as well.
  • DL is one of the few groups on the team with age issues -- Wilfork and Ninkovich should be trending downward. Easley, Jones and others, however, should be on the upswing.
  • Collins and Hightower are still on the upswing.
  • ASSUMING Revis and McCourty are re-signed, DB should be about the same.
So I think having next year's team be about as good as this one is a reasonable base case.

I was going to congratulate you until you started making excuses. Thanks for the wakeup and warmup.

Boo hoo. Look at what we had last year and still got the #2 seed and won a playoff game. Ravens came in and executed well against a defense that was flat most of the game. We know injuries more then you could imagine. Ravens got a couple lucky plays to make it close. Should of lost by 12 and not 5.

Props to the Patriot's staff for a solid game plan.

Also, props to the Pats tackles for holding up against Suggs and Dumervil.

I'd give props to Brady and his new found mobility. He was running from Suggs and Dumervil most of the game but was able to buy that extra half second or get rid of it quickly. (That last one is also
props to the staff for calling quick developing plays, etc.)
