Jets hire Todd Bowles as new HC

So my prediction...

Bowles is more even keel, but still a defensive guy. The defense plays as well as they did under Rex but with less intensity (though that intensity was sporadic). He hires Chan Gailey who performs about as well as Morhinweg did. The new GM isn't any better than Izdick.

In other words, SOJ.
I would expect Bowles to do a decent job defensively and make them better than the bottom 3rd d they have been for 4 years. (21st in pints allowed and 29th in takeaways)

Good point. Perception v. reality.

What has he really done at the pro level coaching-wise? Interim HC in Miami for three games. Defensive coordinator briefly for two college teams and about three years total for two different pro teams. Otherwise was a positional coach. The Cardinals defense was fifth in points allowed this past season, which is decent, but I wonder why this guy was considered such a hot HC prospect. He's a Jersey native, which I guess the Green Beans must have liked.
people around the league love him and they must have their reasons

What are Jet fans saying about the hire?

So we've gone from a toe fetishist, straight to the Bowles...

Word on the street is rats fans like the hire because they can easily identify with the term "Bowles" since it reminds them of the sewers from whence they came

Hiring a GM now to be Bowles' boss would be weird.

Given Bowles' resume, hiring a GM who isn't his boss would also be weird.

Anyhow, with Bowles and Gailey it looks like they're getting guys who have coached in the division. The Bills have that too, of course.

The jets already hired Mike Maccagnan as their GM

Perhaps he's a nice guy? Sends out Christmas cards? Generous on Halloween?

I caught a few Cardinals games and came away impressed by their defense most of the time. He lives and dies by the blitz. In the games I caught, it was relentless and then I saw the error of his ways when Russel Wilson made big play after big play when they blitzed. Bowles solution was to just blitz more lol.

That stubbornness is how you lose games and that alone made him a Jet. I do expect him to be an improvement over Rex but still not a true threat.

There is a lot of history here...
Sportin Woody hired Casserly to help with the exec & coaching search.
Maccagnan worked for Casserly in WA in the 90s and again with the Texans.
Bowles played in WA in the 80s and early 90s...same time Casserly & Maccagnan where there.

So at the end of the day Mike Maccagnan learnt everything he knows about building a team from Casserly.

I'm good with this. ;)

Well, this is one of only two bowls the Jets were gonna sniff this year, and the other one isn't legal in New York yet, so what choice did they have?

The Jets job is so unattractive that it would be near impossible for them to land established, sought-after guys. They did the smart thing and went out and got lesser-known up-and-comers. I hate to admit this, but given the situation, I think Casserly made some pretty good choices. Sure it still has a good chance to blow up, but when you consider how unattractive the Jets jobs were, those are some pretty good hires.

With Rex going to Buffalo, the AFC East may be getting even more competitive.

Rex coming for dat ass.

Yeah I know the new GM is a build via the draft guy. I wouldnt expect any immediate results and wonder if they give him enough slack to even let it play out.

You mean the race for the basement?

I wish Todd Bowles well. I'm glad the Jets hired an African American head coach, and somebody from the NJ/Philadelphia area who knows what he's getting into with the Jets. His background with 6 NFL franchises will serve him well.

I expect the Jets situation will be lower key than the circus with Rex Ryan, which is precisely what they need as they rebuild that team. I also expect him to come in with a huge level of respect for Bill Belichick and what the Patriots have built.

Unfortunate choice to hire the head coach before you hire the GM. Says to me that Woody Johnson thinks he's the GM. Inheriting a pile of money and Fortune 500 stock does not qualify one to run a football operation. Whoever does come in as the GM will be neutered from day one.

I wish him well too, as long as he loses more games than he wins. :)
