Wes Welker

If he were on the Patriots this year he would be behind Edleman and maybe Amendola.

BB made Welker

Welker should stop now and be thankful that BB turned a nobody into a somebody.

The moment he was gone, to me he was gone....no different than sergio brown or jermaine cunningham or brandon spikes or jeremy mincey......a former pat on another team.

Great analogy, all of those you named played like Hall of Famers while they were here.

Here, here! Bury any ill feelings if any and recognize him at Gillette. I would hazard a guess that Mr. Kraft would like to do that one day but I would also guess that Coach Belichick would be indifferent about it.

I posted a poll on this last season, on the subject of Wes retiring a Patriot and it was an overwhelming no. It's not our decision, but I think Pats fans are gonna' need a lot more time to get to that point.

I don't think he has much left in the tank, given how yesterday's game went. but the Colts did a great job of limiting the short stuff from Manning, which also limited WW's usage in the game. I wish him a healthy future, no matter what he decides to do. He was always a gutsy player which made him a favorite of mine, like so many other small guys.....

He never should have gone to the Broncos and should have retired then. He has taken so many hits he has not looked right in years.

I agree the Colts took a play out of the Pats' playbook in defending Manning and taking away the center of the field and forcing Manning to throw outside and deep, but Welker hasn't been right all year. Today was just another example of it.

Fair enough. Green Bay needed time on Favre too. I'd be curious if you take the same poll right after Wes announces his retirement if the results would be different.

History once again showed that BB was right, I can still remember the posters who thought $8MM/yr was too low and were violently insulted by the final deal the Pats offered. Granted its all 20-20 hindsight, but the signs were there. While Welker's catches and importance to the offense was still there, his drops were increasing yearly, his catch radius was shrinking, and his quickness ebbing, He had one more very productive year with Manning, but even then at the end you could see it slipping away, This year he was just a shadow of his form self. You're right Rob, it was sad.

Wes eventually will get his day to be honored at Gillette, He certainly is one of the all time Pats, A guy who should be remembered for his fearless and productive play. But the fact is the Pats knew his time was about up and wanted him back anyway. When he left they replaced his production without a misstep with their 2nd option, and in the end wound up with a younger more versatile player for a bit less.

One more time with feeling Ken, Belichick was right, I was wrong.

That's wrong, as in not right, mistaken, erroneous.........

OK

Weller's production was exceptional but slot receivers are generally devalued in the NFL and he was over 30, the combination of the two factors led to his actual value being far less than his numbers would have suggested. That said Belichick was right on in his evaluation of Weller's career v trajectory and going to Denver was a fateful decision for him IMO as Manning definitely put him in harms way and he paid dearly for it. It's time for him to hang them up. Great player, great career, hope he has a good life after football and his concussions don't haunt him.

Nope, but that won't stop the douchebags from using it.

rofl We already had this conversation during the poll

Manning doesn't know how to use a slot receiver and nor is he patient enough to let a route develop like Tom does.

I don't hate on Wes, he gave his heart to the team when he was here and i wish him luck with his next team.

his catch radius was shrinking,

When Welker was still a Pat, I once started a thread to say he had only one weakness, namely his catch radius. Bad move ...

Nobody calls Welker a traitor on this forum. Everyone calls him Wes or Welker, but in the real world people call Welker that all the time. It's a different format.

I bet every Patriot fan I know has thrown the word traitor around in passing at least from between the time he signed and the Superbowl last year, and they're just football fans, not douchebags.

In his defense, I think Wes got a pretty obvious demonstration in the difference between Peyton and Tom.
Tom has thrown receivers into big hits before, just like everyone, but it was very rare, and in big moments when we needed something bad.

Peyton throws murder balls in week #6 on 1st and 10.

I would of protected myself and been hoping to come out of the season alive with my 5 or 6 million

Welker made two excusable mistakes. One was not recognizing the above, and the other was trusting his agent's views about his open-market value.

I also haven't seen quotes that are as bad in the realm of BB-bashing as the headlines make them seem. So I have nothing against the guy.

I think that all of this goes to show how much Welker was liked by Patriot fans. That stung seeing him go put on Orange. Again, I am just remembering how unforgiving the poll thread was. I think it was a pretty good representation of the real world.

I'm pretty sure all of those concussions have something to do with his decline. Didn't he get 3 of them in his short stint in Denver? (vs how many in NE). I hope he retires before he suffers any permanent damage.

While Wes certainly has/had a ton of talent he also had many plays designed for him to get open when here. He never got that when he went to Denver which is why he was an above average player vs supposed super star as a Bronco.. I hope he lives a good life .... medical history says he may not. Thanks for the memories Wes....
