Have you heard the news? Tomase now on EEI.."not to be a fan!"

I am actually going to go through the trouble of writing hardcopy letters to WEEI's advertisers and telling them I will not buy any of their products as long as they advertise on WEEI while Tomase is employed.

I'm not going to delude myself into thinking it'll matter (unless a whole bunch of other people do it), but it'll make me feel better knowing I did my part (as little as it is) to metaphorically knife that turd.

Is there a way to block the name Tomase from popping up on the forum for me? I don't want to read about him, I don't want to read his columns, I don't want to hear about him, I don't want to see his fat, insipid face. I want to pretend he doesn't exist.

Here's MY solution...

Hi John!!! Good morning....aaaaaaaaah...way to get the day off to a great start!

I heard him the other morning on my way to work and was stunned to hear he was joining WEEI...really surprised me that they would make the move, especially given the overall quality of people they have there right now.

The interesting thing was that one of the reasons why Tomase claimed he went to WEEI was to "get off the sinking ship" that is the newspaper business, which I thought was interesting because on the same day I saw Jeff Howe tweeting to people to "buy a paper"because "he had 4000 words in it": https://twitter.com/jeffphowe/status/549959751254425601

Could have been nothing, but I'm having a tough time believing Tomase wouldn't say that on the radio without some legitimate reason behind it given the seriousness of the comment. Makes me wonder if there's some instability at the Herald right now and Tomase jumped to WEEI for that reason. The frustrating part for that newspaper is they took a massive PR hit over that debacle (which I hated every minute of and it still irks me to even think about it), leaving them having to essentially rebuild that beat. I'd have to go back and dig to find exactly who all the writers were back then, but I remember it changed radically after that.

Ian Rapoport did a solid job while he was there and obviously moved on, but I have to say, Jeff Howe is a great guy and has been a tremendous addition and truthfully he worked his a** off at NESN to get there. I couldn't help but notice that he was pumping out 2-3 quality entries a day during the dead of the offseason and they were always great stuff, so I was really psyched to learn he got that gig and thought he really helped continue the upgrade that they've done there.

Since he's been at the Herald he's also been a guy who has broken a lot of stories and has been terrific in terms of getting injury information. He's also hilarious on Twitter and puts a lot of that personality into his writing. I've also always been a big fan of Karen Guregian, who in my opinion is top notch in terms of her analysis and doesn't get enough credit for what she does. I also do enjoy reading Steve Buckley's stuff, although he doesn't write much in terms of the Patriots and Callahan's writing is better than his on-air personality. I do read Borges because his brutal honesty has its moments of being interesting, and I've always been a fan of his writing style and the structure and technical aspects of the way he writes - albeit I read him more when he was with the Globe. I was also a big fan of Mark Daniels, and he's made the Providence Journal relevant again because they had absolutely no one getting it done reporting-wise following Shalise Manza Young's departure to the Globe. I enjoy his stuff, it's top-notch.

But yeah...needless to say I was surprised to see it happen. I've spoken to many different media people from all different outlets over the years and heard their thoughts and most seemed to side with the belief that the percentage of blame was higher on the people above him than on Tomase himself.

However, one individual I have a lot of respect for - and I won't mention his name but you'll probably figure it out based on what I'm about to say - is notorious for not posting a breaking news story until he's absolutely sure of its accuracy and strongly believes it's more important to be correct than to be first. Sometimes he won't even post anything, even if everyone runs with it. That speaks volumes about today's media, who overall is more focused on getting a story out there than they are making sure it's correct.

That didn't happen in the case of that story, and it was an incredibly damaging mistake that I do believe adversely affected that day and ruined what had been an absolutely amazing and historic year. No apology they could ever publish could undo what the original story did, and unfortunately regardless of where the fault truly lies, his name will forever be attached to it.

This is because THIS individual is a professional and possesses the intestinal fortitude to stand up for what is RIGHT.

Back in the day, journalists would run with a story unless they could verify it with at least two independent sources. Today, they run with stories that are nothing more than rumors. They have adopted the policy that it is better to be first and wrong and have to apologize than be the only one to get the story 100% right and be last.

I know many Patriots fans who though interested do not read sites such as Patsfans.

Steve Balestrieri, Derek Havens, Miguel, John Morgan, and I have put a lot of effort into improving the quality of the day-to-day content here and I've had a few people tell me they've noticed, which is definitely appreciated. Obviously it would be nicer if more people read and shared our stuff, but there's been some incredibly good content from some of the guys that I know for a fact hasn't gotten the amount of attention it should have. This is a pretty good group we've got right now and we're all working hard and it will continue to grow. If you're not reading, the links run right at the top and any feedback - positive or negative - is always appreciated

There's some great stuff there. BTW, am I wrong in thinking that Chris Price got some of his start on this website?

Yes, both WEEI's Chris Price (http://www.patsfans.com/price/blog/) and Ryan Hannable (http://www.patsfans.com/blogs/ryan/) were both contributors here for a bit, although Chris was also writing for a local newspaper in Boston and was already an experienced journalist, and honestly, we were fortunate to have him for a couple of seasons. He was absolutely terrific and he's incredibly talented and probably one of the most underrated guys in this market. Although he continues to elevate himself both with his writing and his broadcast skills. The guy is just incredible and he's really an overall terrific guy. Definitely glad to see him doing well.

Ryan also did a good job for us while he was here, and it's been fun seeing him grow into his role there. It's always cool to see guys you worked with move on to bigger things and I've worked hard to make sure that we've maintained a good reputation so that people hopefully want to work with us. There have been other guys too that we've had here who have moved on, but those were two of the most recent that I've been fortunate to have here. I can't take any credit for either of them, I was simply at the right place at the right time, and I'm lucky to have the guys we do right now as well.

It seems as though the base of Sports Talk Radio is changing somewhat, as they seem to have attracted listeners who reiterate the crap they hear.. the thought processes seem to have changed and issues are begged without corroboration.

The whole medium seems to be moving further and further from facts and more and more towards the genre of facebook likes or twitter followers.. sensationalism and assumption trumps reality.

I find myself listening to sports talk less and less, their efforts to manufacture controversy is nauseating.. nothing more insufferable than listening to Merloni and Benz talk football Felger spinning Pats nontroversies or Zolak trying to work up the crowd about John Lester.. it is painful to my ears. Then there are the contarians who love the attention..

Sports talk radio is going down the crapper... maybe if they followed the simple rule of talk what you know about and admit your limits it would be infinitely more appealing.

Speaking of a sinking ship, the fat slob may be the one that sinks WEEI. As I have noted before, it is one thing to be controversial and another thing to be hated. What sports fan who wasn't born yesterday is going to support the sponsors of the most hated writer in Boston.

One word defines a relationship. That relationship might be with your boss, wife, boss's wife, or anyone you choose to associate. The word is TRUST.
I will never read an article of an author I don't trust.

98.5's popularity is the reason Tomase is employed by WEEI? Really?!? Apparently, Adolph Hitler was not available because he is probably the only person less popular in this town than John Tomase.

The management of WEEI weren't so stupid to make moves like hiring ratings poison like John Tomase, 98.5 may not be as popular as it is. Yes, this a way to keep up with 98.5 is to drive people away from your radio station to go to the competition.

Of course anyone who doesn't agree with Deus on his listening choices are just stupid.

1. adolph hitler
2. charles manson
3. neighborhood pedophile
4. jackass tomase
5. jeffrey dahlmer

numbers 3 and 4 are interchangeable and up for debate.

I've spoken to many different media people from all different outlets over the years and heard their thoughts and most seemed to side with the belief that the percentage of blame was higher on the people above him than on Tomase himself.
Yes, the editors played fast and loose with that story in true tabloid fashion, which I'm sure is why they let Tomase remain employed there. The buck should've stopped with them. But that in no way absolves Tomase as primary culprit in this particular case. HE sold it to them KNOWING it was unverified and the newspaper's collective lust for making a sensational splash to remain relevant won out. Back in my newspaper days, my conscience never would've let something like that happen and believe me, I had similar opportunities. It comes down to one's own sense of honesty and integrity vs. blind ambition. Tomase's career survived because he was a slimeball working for slimeballs. His hiring by WEEI is just more slimeball-enabling.
