*Punctuated by a Shameless Boast!! :D

I, Your Devoted Servant, 08/24/11, when Ryan was 3-2 against us, and coming off back to back Final 4's:

"I believe, despite his recent great success, particularly against us, that ~ provided Sanchez* remains his QB ~ it will be years before he beats Coach Bill again."

*or someone even worse!! :D

Link: The Thread where I posted that Prediction.

01 ~ Coach Ryan's Record against Mad Bill before my Prediction: 3-2.
02 ~ Coach Ryan's Record against Mad Bill after my Prediction: 1-7!!

Ahhh...The Timeless Wisdom of Off The Grid!!

More to the point: I stick to every word I wrote that day, and I hope some of you share this Perspective:

"Anyone who actually reads the entire quotes know that we have NOTHING to complain about from Coach Ryan. He is a TREMENDOUS Coach, and, despite the media's attempts to paint him as doing otherwise, the truth is that he has treated his rivals ~ including Coach Bill ~ with nothing but respect from DAY ONE.

He and Coach Bill seem to genuinely like each other, and there's certainly no question about their mutual respect.

Which is not to say that Coach Bill won't lay as many 40 Burgers on him as he possibly can!!

But I find the universal disdain for'm around here a bit amusing, boys...

Y'all know damned well that if he was our Coach, most of you would worship the guy...and rightfully so.

As it is, though, he's going up against the greatest Coach of the modern age...One who I believe will eventually go down in History as the greatest ever, by most...And one who has a very strong record against even the most formidable adversaries...including none other than the legendary Bill Walsh.

And he managed his astonishing success against Coach Walsh during Joe Montana's prime.

And Coach Ryan's recent success against Coach Bill has been, lest we forget, during a transitional phase for this team...one that is that now nearly complete.

All of which is to say: Coach Ryan ~ who I do revere ~ is the toast of the league, right now, generally perceived as being either poised to pass Coach Bill by, or as even having already done so...

Yet I believe, despite his recent great success, particularly against us, that ~ provided Sanchez remains his QB ~ it will be years before he beats Coach Bill again."

I wish you Success, Coach Ryan, Worthy Adversary ~ just as long as it doesn't impede our own!!

Rex grew on my in the final few seasons.

How can you not like a rival HC who has enough fun with it to play Tom Brady's biggest fan in a bad Adam Sandler movie? Rex Ryan is just a character and it's hard to dislike him.

I wish him well, too.

Won't miss his blitzes but his press conferences were great.

Give the devil his due. When he had a functioning offense, he gave the Pats everything could handle and more. He was finally done in by the drafting incompetence of Tannenbaum and Idzik. I just hope he leaves the AFC.

Just a nitpick, but his record is 1-7. They won the second match-up in 2013 though the merits of their victory should be taken under consideration since, apparently, the zebras had money on that game.

Rex Ryan is a loser.

Sorry Grid. I can't do it. I have publicly given Rex all the credit in the world for being a good defensive planner, and maintaining the loyalty of his team. However its ALL the other skills that are mandatory for a HC that he is lacking that keep me from giving him any respect.

To my mind the MYTH of Rex Ryan casts a far bigger shadow than the reality. No question in my mind that he is a HOF self promoter. He might give the best press conferences since that other over rated blow hard, Bill Parcells. So to a certain degree Ryan could be called a media creation, and we see it playing out in the media since his firing.

His sycophants all want us to forget the last four years and continually blame all the Jets problems on his owner, GM's, and players. Four years of mediocrity and NONE of it was because of Rex Ryan. Teflon Rex is a a nickname he definitely has earned.

What's amazing to me that if you break down all the skilsl you'd like to see in a HC. Skills we see every day in our own. It remarkable how few he actually has and still be considered the hottest HC'ing prospect around Here are a list of just some problems he's CONSISTENTLY had

1. Game management - 6 years later and the Jets are STILL a hot mess on the sidelines on game day.

2. Personnel - The overall personnel of the Jets has dramatically deteriorated since he been HC. And don't give me that crap that he's had no power. Its amazing to me he's gotten a pass on this. After the 2nd AFCCG (and the Jets one really good team) Rex was the most powerful man in NY sports. No question he'd have a HUGE say in who is populating HIS team.......and it was after THAT year that the Jets roster started to go down hill

3. Awareness of your lockerroom - out of the man's own mouth. He had no idea what was going on in his locker room

4. Developing you coaching staff - Who among his coaching staff hasn't he thrown under the bus. The 2 best coaches from the "rex tree" where guys who ran screaming from the organization to get away from him (Pettine and Shottenheimer). With the Jets they were nothing more than scapegoats. Both leave NJ and a few years later, Pettine is a HC doing a decent job, and Shotty is a OC getting looks

5. Developing the players - coaching them up. Its hard to name a player on the Jets who they developed into a better player than when they came to them. Sure they have a lot of talented players, but who among them can you say is better that what they brought to the table on their own. Who have they "coached up". Mo Wilerson is about the only one I can think of who came into the league as a good player, and elevated his game into something beyond that. Just think back to the JAG who spent a couple of weeks with the Jets trying to find someone who would coach him. I'm afraid there is a lot more truth that hyperbole than Rex would like us to believe.

6. Creating an institutional message - Well if it was its ok to be an Ahole, then he succeeded. But if it was "do your job" or "ignore the noise"....not so much

So in summary, if you want a HC who will sell tickets and optimism based on personality and charisma on a short term basis, then Rex is you man. If you want to BUILD a team and organization that has a chance of long term success you are going to be VERY disappointed with Rex Ryan.

To Jet fans and many others as well, the epitome of Coaching ineptitude is Rich Kotite. Few remember that Kottite was a fairly successful NFL HC with the Eagles (something like 35-26) before coming to the Jets, where I think he won something like 4 games in 2 years, and cemented his legacy. I can easily see Rex coming to a similar fate where his 2nd bite at the apple won't be as successful as the first.....and the first was none too successful to begin with.

But I guess that's just my opinion, Grid. BTW good call on Rex's 3-2 start. You nailed it. A lot of us thought the same thing, but you put down in "print" You have given me the courage to make my prediction for Rex's future. If he's smart he'd go to TV. He's talented and you don't have to be that detail oriented, make other accountable, and lead an entire organization.

I think Rex gave the Pats a game most weeks. The Pats won both games this year, but by a total of three points...

Thank you Ken for saying what I would have liked to.
As a DC, absolutely. The guys knows what he's doing and excels at it.
As a HC, he has consistently ignored or abandoned fundamental aspects of the job, to the detriment of the franchise.

It was fun having him around and he's certainly a character. And while I hate the Jets I don't hate him now that he's gone.

Wrecks Ryan: very good defensive schemer/strategist. Otherwise, here's pretty much everything else you need to know about him:

I'll miss him as he was entertaining. I don't however, think he has what it takes to be a HC.

But, Ken really sums up Rex well. And that part about his locker room awareness, I'll add, what are we to think about a coach that appoints Santonio Holmes the team captain?

Rexy is a talented defensive mind who can't get beyond his own immaturity and ego.

His defenses have not even been good. 21st in points allowed 29th in takeaways for the last 4 years.
He is a good Dc in perception but not in NFL games.

Whatever people argue about him, it is a fact that the man has stifled Brady's offenses on multiple occasions. There were certainly days when we got the best of him (42-5 beat down, Thanksgiving massacre) but many others where we had trouble (divisional game, three of the last four games). I can at least respect that. Not an easy feat to shut down a HOF QB.

While I think that Ryan is a very good motivator and has an excellent defensive Xs and Os mind, I think it takes a more complete skillset to drive an organization to success. That said, there have been successful head coaches with limited skillsets that excelled in diminished roles on teams with good "systems" in place. Cower and Tomlin are a good example of this. Ultimately I think it boils down to having the right people in the right roles.

Rex Ryan is a loser.
Given that his GMs were idiots, I can't anyone -outside of BB- doing any better. Yes, the Jets suck this year. That was the personnel. Seriously, name 1 Jet player that can start for us. Maybe competent back ups for the o-line. After Decker and maybe Harvin - who are depth- I can't think of many that make the 53 (although part of that is I don't follow the Jets.)

Yet they played us, and GB, close. Heck, they beat the Steelers. Maybe there was another reason behind their few successes -again, I do not follow the Jets. However the only one I see is the coach making - not chicken salad out of chicken bleep, maybe mock chicken salad (you know with Ritz crackers instead of lettuce :) ).

Of 32 NFL coaches, he is better than, say, 16 of them.

He is a good Dc in perception but not in NFL games.

A big part of that has been his general manager giving him crap to work with. Secondly he's had not only bad QBs but QBs that consistently turn it over and that leads to those points. Given that roster it would have been a lot worse without his defensive schemes. I do think he needs the right job and OC to be a successful HC. If he takes Atlanta I think he'll be successful.

Yeah, I never had much respect for him. Inventive defenses against us, but it's obvious he prepares for a year for those two games.

He's funny, if you like broad humor, but i have to agree with AJ here.
