Tom Brady Restructures Contract - shifts $24 million

I think the point here is that if the Pats decide to "move on" from Brady before this contract ends, they now have the "option" of releasing him instead of trading him.

And the reason brady agreed to cut his number down from 48 to 24 million?

Maybe it's his way of staying with the team but it's dumb of him to give up more of his money.

This is why I SO want to win this year. If not this year, AT LEAST one more before Brady leaves here or retires. Not only would it put the GOAT debate to rest once and for all, it would be the best reward--heck, the ONLY reward--for taking the hometown discounts and doing everything in his power to WIN.

Ring #4--This HAS to be the year!! HAS TO!!!!

God I wonder what the JEST boards are making of this one...

The more I read, the less it looks like a factor in anything in the foreseeable future... I am sure that elsewhere it's already on a par with Parcells planning his move pre-super-bowl

I agree.

Also, I'd love to be part of this forum when the pats win a super bowl, I wasn't part of it for the first three and I feel a part of this community. We've been through so many lows and heartbreaks it's time !

Guess we now know why there are no fully guaranteed contracts in the NFL. The Pats must have not known about the escrow provision or believed the provision did not apply for some reason.

All the talk of whether this makes it easier to trade or release Brady is nonsense. This adjustment was made to free up 24 million that otherwise would have been unavailable to both the
Pats and Brady.

One last thought. While this revision doesn't create any additional 2015 cap space, it does open up the possibility of a simple restructure of Brady's contract in 2015 where the Pats could turn $ 7 million of his salary into a bonus which would create $4.67 million in additional 2015 cap room if it was needed.

?????

Whats been reported, so far, clearly makes it easier to release Brady. $24 million fully guaranteed dollars just disappeared. That's why the rest of the details are important to look at.

See my blog post http://www.patsfans.com/salary-cap/?p=1020

Was it me? Or did Holley not like being corrected?
It was not you, Miguel. I have been a Holley fan for many years, but he has become particularly prickly about being even mildly challenged recently. I think he fears being labeled a "homer" and is trying to be more of a contrarian. I always considered him a fair observer, but lately he's clearly become more negative. Whether the genesis of that is legitimate or contrived, I don't know. What I do know is that it's real.

This (imo) is why this restructure happened:

1. TB gains a 1mil more per year
2. More money can be spent to resign other valuable players to help make it to the SB.
3. TB can now be a UFA and command the price he wants if BB lets him go
4. Pats can release TB without a big hit to the cap

It's a win-win for everyone involved. While I admit its depressing to contemplate life after Brady, I do agree with TB that he needs to do what is best for him.

So depressing. I love the Pats and I love TB... crushes me that Brady might retire to another team.

They came within inches of completing that bomb to Moss

I know, I replayed that one that just went through his fingertips probably 100 times. Strangely enough he still doesn't catch it no matter how many times I watch it.

Without Revis the D is not nearly as good. Hopefully they pay the man.

Here's another possibility. What if Brady has already decided to retire after next season? In that case, the guarantees would be meaningless. He's already essentially at the point where next season is guaranteed as a vested vet and he's covered if he has a career-ending injury in the SuperBowl next month.

So, in that case, why make the Pats tie up 24 mil in escrow that could be better spent on bonuses to nail down some extensions with key players?

I believe him when he says he wants to play into his 40s

Guess we now know why there are no fully guaranteed contracts in the NFL.
All 1st round draft picks have fully guaranteed contracts for the 1st years. How much of the fourth is fully guaranteed depends on draft slot. Example, some of Chandler Jones' 2015 salary is fully guaranteed. None of Hightower's is.

I believe him when he says he wants to play into his 40s

He might have changed his mind after taking 15 hits in the Jets game.... :)
