Black Monday and the NFL Coaching Carousel

On the NBC pregame show they are saying that Jim Harbaugh is officially gone from San Francisco, though I haven't seen any official announcement yet.

Others that are pretty much guaranteed to be fired within the next 24 hours:

Rex Ryan, Jets

Marc Trestman, Bears

Mike Smith, Falcons

Tony Sporano, Raiders (interim coach)

Others that have a good chance of being fired:

Joe Philbin, Dolphins

Jay Gruden, Redskins

Tom Coughlin, Giants

Gus Bradley, Jaguars

I'm guessing Ken Whisenhunt (Titans) and Lovie Smith (Bucs) don't get fired yet, as they are in the first year of their contract.

Anybody that I missed?
I wonder if Whiz could be one and done in Tennessee.

Yeah but I feel like NY is an extremely different situation from NO. Win the public favor in New Orleans and they love you for a long time. Win it in NY and they love you til the next season.
Win a SB with the Jets, and you'll become a legend. But I'm sure you were speaking about the Giants; they've had great success over the last three decades.

Have to wonder about Sean Payton, and what happened in New Orleans this season.
Payton isn't going anywhere. Like 1 poster said the Saints had a ton of injuries. I'm pretty sure Payton can turn things around very quickly!

I imagine Harbaugh has a few suitors on his dance card.
He's going to Michigan, it's a done deal. I'm honestly shocked, that Harbaugh did not interview with other teams. I can't remember the last time that a successful NFL head coach, of Harbaugh's caliber , went back to college.

I think Rex and Oakland might be a match. Right or wrong he definitely has the personality for that team. And he is a guy that can bring players in via FA.

there are 48 million reasons for that

Well, basketball coaches do it all the time. They live like kings and are honored in the community, with much less pressure and plenty of money. as long as they can recruit, it's a pretty sweet life. Pro coaching is a meat grinder by comparison.

He'd ruin Derek Carr, trust me Oakland doesn't want him. They need an offensive minded coach, who can develop and help a QB grow.

Coughlin won two and it seems people want to put him on the chopping block nearly every year.

(BTW He isn't going anywhere)

Even the years they won they struggled to make the play offs...

Multiple reporters expect Idzik will be fired tomorrow, as well.

I'd love to see Coughlin stay as long as he wants to be there - he's a good coach and the NFL is better with him in it

But regardless of his Super Bowl wins, if you lose your players you lose your players - and if that's the case it's time for a change

Wrecks Ryan on the other hand, as much as I enjoy the comic relief his bafoonery approach to head coaching provides, is BAD for the NFL

The last thing any football fan should want is to see him in such a position.

I can see it now - a bad team with a high draft pick takes him as head coach - they pick a young QB with the potential to improve an NFL that badly needs a new good generation of QBs

What does Wrecks do? He probably takes that fragile QB, promptly guarantees he'll win a Super Bowl. When the pressure of that guarantee gets to the young QB with confidence issues, Rex will do the same thing the following year... then he'll further destroy the young QB's confidence by bringing in veteran QBs, flirting with Peyton Manning or Tim Tebow, and we'll have another butt-fumble.

And then, to shore up that QB's confidence he'll advocate for a $20 million extention

Head coaches like that are bad for their team, bad for young QBs (and other developmental players) and just bad for anyone who wants to see quality throughout the NFL
GM's that placate this type of sewage are thousands of times worse.

Rex or Harbaugh to Oakland or Chicago. If Rex went to Chicago and won the SB next year I would be thrilled to death, just because the Jets fired him and the agony the fans would feel.

Does McDaniels get another head coaching job? Atlanta would be an interesting pairing. But besides that none of these jobs strike me as a good fit for him. Maybe Oakland because of Derek Carr?

I imagine Harbaugh has a few suitors on his dance card.

Harbaugh, like him or not, is a well proven winner and should be pursued by any team in need of a HC (especially the regular cellar dwellers). I believe any team in need would be getting the best coaching option, by far, available for the 2015 season. Personally I think the Niners are making a big mistake letting him go......we will see.
((Harbaugh appears to be committed to an NCAA team already))

Well he had a mediocre run. A couple playoff appearances but just couldn't get them over that hump

A team that had never had consecutive winning seasons had 5 of them in a row and went to the NFCCG. That's a hell of a lot better than just being a mediocre run.
