Dennard to IR, Boyce to 53

Maybe Dennard never was worth a damn. I mean, the 2013 Pats defense did have big problem getting off the field on obvious 3rd and long passing downs. Clearly, Belichick saw a need to upgrade the CB position (Browner signing).

Decent zone corner, no good at man coverage?

Technically, he has one more year here under contract for 2015 first. Some believe that he may not even see that as a Patriot.

The base case is that he stays next season. If they only have 5 CBs they want to keep ahead of him, I think they go with 6 next year, and while it's possible, the odds are they won't have 6 ahead of him.

Hahahaha

I thought Dennard was a sufficient number two through 2012-2013 but he was struggling when he was on the field this year.

When you say earn do you mean Boyce actiaved for a meaningless last game of the season, where any other WR with an injury will not play, and warm bodies will be needed to catch passes mostly from JAG?
If that's what you mean by earned then I agree.

I'd love to see Boyce step up and become productive, just really catch fans/coaches/BB's eye with some solid play. However, this 'promotion' is not likely an indication of that wishful impending breakout. The promotion is an indication that warm bodies are needed to fill in for guys who actually will be catching passes in the post season. Just is what it is......
Sure, if we want to be all negative and depressing than sure that's what I mean.

True. It still had to be a stressful offseason mentally. I'm as puzzled as everyone else. I thought Dennard had established himself as at least a decent JAG-level starting CB in the NFL. Heck, he was the starter on opening day. He's really fallen off a cliff.
I think it was the lack of pending charges and offseason jail time that threw him off his game. This is the first season in his NFL career that he wasn't out on bail during, there is an adjustment obviously.

I'm surprised that Dennard wasn't sent to IR a bit earlier. I'm also surprised that Swanson was cut from the Practice Squad when Dennard having issues. Of course, Swanson is now back.

Yeah, a little odd to allocate two roster spots for almost the entire season to guys who didn't really play: Dennard and Dobson.

Boyce is very good with the ball in his hands. I'd like to see a screen package put in for him on short throws that don't require a complex route running/options. Try to get him the ball outside. He's fast and elusive. Pretty strong too. Might be able to back up Edelman as someone previously mentioned.

Or it says that he turned down people attempting to sign him to stay with the Pats..
Maybe. Red this morning that there was another team poking around.

Par for the course for CBs we draft and develop.

Still hate that trade to this day, in case you cared.

I always care, Supafly. ;)

EHIII had his limitations, but he also had a role. To take it one step further, he produced on KORs as well.

I agree. I think with EHIII, it came down to his contract coming up and BB wanting to go bigger at CB (see Bodden and Springs) and him thinking he was not better than Wheatley, Willhite, Butler in the slot.

but the timing and situation makes it almost certain this is a short lived promotion

We'll see. The team has been carrying one less WR since putting Dobson on IR and no one is thrilled about the WRs after the top two. If I had to guess, I'd say he's on the roster through the playoffs.

Hopefully Boyce can offer more than Tyms has of late.

Tyms has been contributing on special teams and has been cited recently for a couple of key blocks on running plays. He also has been the recipient of the "black jersey" a few times for his work as one of the practice players of the week.

Actually, after the "top 2" we're "carrying" a Pro-Bowler. Our "#4" is really a PR/KR guy, who, if he was on a rookie contract, everyone would be in love with. Tyms is a "project" who's likely gone in the offseason.

There's only 1 football, and we have 5 guys who can get it done. (Julien, Jo-Jo, Rob, Tim and Shane). I hope we retain Vereen but that seems like a 50/50 proposition.

Wish I'd seen that before I posted. St guys carry big weight with Bill. Like to hear that (black jersey) stuff.

Indeed. And he hasn't had a reception since the first Buffalo game in October.

Why would it be a short lived promotion? It's not like they need the roster spot. Who would they replace boyce with on the roster do you suppose?

And how many targets had Tyms since the Buffalo game? i just remember 1, the other were in bombs, low % plays.
