2015 Draft Prospect Thread

Arizona State are playing Duke in the Sun Bowl tonight and for you regulars, you probably are aware that two of my early favourites; Marcus Hardison and DJ Foster play for the Sun Devils. Well there's one other name that should be of interest to us and that's OT/OG Jamil Douglas. He's been playing LT this year but had previously played at LG and that's where he probably projects at the NFL level. He's 6'4" and 300lb and is another star of the "athletic freak" pre-season previews.

NFL.com:

Buzz: He will be a third-year starter for the Sun Devils this fall, but this season he'll be at left tackle instead of guard, where he has started the past two seasons. Douglas is legendary in ASU's weight room, with a power clean of 385 pounds, a bench press of 430 and a squat of 565. He has gained 40 pounds since arriving at ASU, but his body-fat percentage is in the low teens. In addition, Douglas runs the 40 in under 5.0 seconds.

Douglas was chosen to the All Pac-12 first team honour and will be going to the Shrine Game this year. He's also a team captain. Mel Kiper has him graded as the 10th best OG in the draft at this point (11th at CBS with a 5-6th round grade).

If I can get the game streamed live on CBSsports today here in the UK, I'll be prioritising the ASU game today. Hopefully some of you might join me.

Here's Rob Rang on Douglas pre-season:

STRENGTHS: Douglas looks the part of an NFL offensive lineman with broad shoulders, a trim middle and good balance. He is quick off the snap and plays with good leverage in pass protection to absorb bull rushers, showing good flexibility and core strength. He slides well laterally and looks to help his teammates when not covered up, often shoving unsuspecting defensive linemen to the ground.

Douglas is a bit more inconsistent in the running game. He plays a bit high while drive blocking, dropping his head and leaving himself vulnerable to over-arm swim moves. He's frequently asked to pull -- showing above average agility and balance when doing so -- but is indecisive and too often resorts to sealing off defenders from the action rather than driving his opponent out of the way and creating a hole.

WEAKNESSES: Scouts will want to investigate Douglas' past. He was arrested midway through the 2010 season for second-degree burglary charges for stealing from a teammate and was suspended by then-head coach Dennis Erickson. The charges were later reduced and Douglas has had no known issues in the three years since.

So I just started following this guy on twitter and saw this buried in his timeline:

If New England were to allow Shane Vereen to walk, I guarantee you DJ Foster would be a highly coveted target for them

Glad it's not just me.

A name I haven't heard before. Greg Gabriel on Bloomsburg LB Justin Shirk:

Shirk has average NFL linebacker size at about 6004 – 235. He has some length to his frame and looks as if he can easily carry 240+. He is very athletic, has speed and is a natural bender. You never see him not in a good football position.
Being that he is a javelin thrower, he has natural explosion through his hips and that shows up on tape. He plays strong and is a very explosive player. He easily handles and sheds blockers at the D-II level.
His balance and change of direction are very good and he does a great job moving laterally and clearing piles. You seldom see him off his feet. He has speed and range with play speed in the 4.65 range. He is a playmaker and has been Bloomsburg leading tackler the last few seasons. While Bloomsburg is still playing in the D-II playoffs, Shirk has 109 total tackles in 11 games including 21 tackles for loss, 11 sacks and one interception.
He is instinctive and consistently around the ball. He makes plays at the point of attack and in pursuit. As a pass rusher, he is relentless, coming hard and getting rid of blockers easily. He has good hand use and keeps opponents off his body.
In coverage, he has a quick drop and gets and keeps good position. He has the speed and quickness to play in man coverage and does.
It can be difficult to project a Division II player, but Shirk does what he has to do and that is dominant the level of comp. I would love to see him in an All-Star game this January. I see him as being able to play inside in a 3-4 or 4-3 scheme. Off of a tape look, I would grade him as a B level player (3rd – 4th round) but if he plays well in an All Star game and works out well at the Combine, I can see him rising to being a high three or low second round type.

Here's Rob Rang on Douglas pre-season:

Keep an eye on Laken Tomlinson in that game too. RG for Duke.

One of my favorite QB prospects for '15, Clint Trickett, of WVU, will now reitre from football and coach at WVU after suffering 5 concussions in 14 months, what a shame, he threw for north of 3,200 yards this year while throwing 18 TDs and almost beating 'Bama in the opener while throwing 365 yards on Saban's D

Jamison Crowder continues to look like a future star to me from Duke, I finally see the Antonio Brown comparison:
He had a day vs Arizona State: 7/102 receiving and a 68 yard PR to the house, on top of that I feel Anthony Boone is worth a Day 3 pick for somebody, real nice arm and strong leader, definitely a project though

I really hope Crowder is drafted by NE, some see him as a project but I feel he can contribute right away like Edelman in '09 (37/259/1 statline) or hopefully more

Rumors that Shilique Calhoun's family has been speaking to agents, although his '13 was better than '14 I'm excited to see him play professionally, wouldn't mind NE taking him in the first 2 rounds, he doe it all at a high level

Terry Williams ruled ineligible for East Carolina's bowl game against Florida:

It could be a good thing, or a bad thing. Good because it could keep Williams under the radar, and keep his draft stock down. Bad because it could indicate either a lack of effort to keep up his academic standings, or possibly be indicative of problems mastering complex defensive schemes. East Carolina isn't known for its curricular rigor. Probably irrelevant, but something to be checked out.

Yeah, I heard about this guy...

Makes a lot of Big Plays, but also gives up a lot of Big Plays because he doesn't stick to'is Assignments.

Shirks his Duties, you might say.

So you pair him with Gerod Holliman.. Atleast Patriots wont have to worry about 3 Down D

I am not planning on doing scouting reports on Mariota and Winston but I have seen a ton of their games and wanted to throw a few things out there about them that might not be the norm on these 2.

1. First off, I am a notoriously tough grader of QB's.

2. I think Mariota is the top QB in this draft, but all this talk about how great he is going to be and is a can't miss prospect is concerning to me. He has some pretty significant issues that need to be corrected. He has to work on ball placement and he has to work on his footwork. In the offense they run, he is purely an upper body thrower, which makes him inaccurate. Not so inaccurate that he doesn't complete balls, but too many balls on wrong shoulder or hips. Those are incomplete or picked off in the NFL.

3. As for Winston, he also struggles with accuracy, especially in the short to intermediate passes. He stares down his receivers way too much. Is big and strong and will stand in the pocket and take a hit. Is surprisingly good at reading defenses from a blitzing standpoint and know where the ball needs to go. Off the field issues are a huge concern for me and I would not take him in the first round.

Just a few random thoughts that have been rattling in my brain for awhile now.

Daniel Jeremiah on Dante Fowler:

Studied Florida edge rusher Dante Fowler yesterday... He has violent hands and an explosive 1st step. Motor doesn't stop. Big fan.

https://twitter.com/MoveTheSticks/status/549460054500311040

Jeremiah also mentioned last week being impressed with film of Bud Dupree. Akeem Ayers' rise has made me less inclined to move up for an edge rusher, but Fowler and Dupree are both really enticing.

One of my favorite QBs for '15, Bo Wallace, has decided to work with QB mechanics guru, Tom House, after his Peach Bowl, to prepare for the draft, smart move, House works with Brady among many other athletes

Cb pj williams of fsu would be a great pick if he comes out and if he lasts that long. Especially if Revis isn't here next year.

I could see scherff maybe lasting until late first. He'd be a good guard.

Scherff could certainly drop, and would be an excellent pick. I really hope CB won't be a high draft priority.

This TCU v OleMiss game is kind of a let down

S-E-C, S-E-C, S-E....oh wait

Not watching it but judging by twitter, one of my favourite linebackers Paul Dawson is playing well.

Josh Norris mocked Dawson to Philly in the 1st last week, and got lots of negative feedback from Philly fans. He's tooting Dawson's horn relentlessly on twitter right now. Calling him Paul "Lavonte David" Dawson.

I saw that. Not a bad comp but I still like the Mayo one. He's not as physical as Mayo but he's relentless and is a tackle machine. I wouldn't have a problem with the David comp though. Because of the way our defense is, I'd rather Zach Hodges as a LB prospect but if we lost Mayo, I'd be very happy drafting Dawson.
