My wife watched part of the Seahawks game with me & thought they were scary good.
I think I'll go tell her to grow a pair.
On 2nd thought...
Actually it would probably good if your wife did grow a pair.
Every married couple should have at least one.

Merry Xmas PWP!

Good morning Patriots fans.

I saw a link to this discussion over at Seahawks.net and I must say I’ve really enjoyed reading this thread. I’ve also thoroughly enjoyed watching “The Patriot Way” over the last 15 years and have nothing but respect for your team. I was pulling hard for the Patriots in 07, mostly because it would have shut up both 49er fans about Montana being “the greatest ever”, and we wouldn’t have had to hear about the ’72 Dolphins anymore. Jesus, watching them pop the champagne every year is obnoxious. Alas, Manning the Lesser miracle’d his way to a win and killed that dream. Bummer.

Thoughts from reading this thread:

1) I was pleasantly surprised at the number of posters here that view Russell Wilson as an elite QB. Obviously, I agree. There seems to be no shortage of people everywhere else who still thinks of Wilson as “Trent Dilfer who can run/a game manager”. I’m not really sure where that perception comes from outside his lower volume passing attempts. His passing efficiency and combined passing/rushing totals are unreal. The kids just makes plays out of nothing, and is seemingly breaking records every other week. It’s really nice to see him get a little love outside of Seahawks fandom. Kudos to you guys.

2) Of all the teams in the NFC, the team most built to give us problems in the playoffs are the Cowboys. Mostly, because if Seattle has anything resembling a weakness on defense it’s challenged depth on the defensive line, now that Mebane is out. Although they did come up to Seattle and beat us earlier in the year, I’m not sure if I like their chances of doing it twice. Certainly not now that the ‘Hawks D is peaking at the right time, and are playing better than they had all year.

3) Of all the teams in the AFC, the Patriots are the team I think is most capable of beating Seattle if our two squads both make it to the Super Bowl. While I don’t think your wide receivers match up particularly well you do have Gronk. He’s not unstoppable, but he’s about as close as it gets. The one thing that Belichick does that few other NFL coaches do, is structure an ever changing, complimentary game plan. One week you’ll see Brady throw it 50 times. The next week you’ll see him with 25 attempts while the Pats run Blount/Gray /Ridley down opposing teams throats all game. It’s very hard to predict what the Emperor will do/call.

Anyway, thanks for letting me join your discussion. I’ll keep my fingers crossed in hopeful anticipation that this is the game we get in February. The only other team I’d rather play in the ‘Bowl is Pittsburgh, for obvious reasons. **** Pittsburgh. **** them right in the ***.

Fans there seem to respect the Steelers there, the Pats not so much. At least 1 guy pointed out the Squealers Strength of schedule.

None of them realize that we always torch The Squealers D.

Yeah, some guys think the Stealers match up better. Most of us give the Pats their due. Me among then.

I think the Seahawks would be the toughest team for the Pats to beat in the tournament. IMO No one will beat the Hawks in Seattle this postseason.

OTOH the Pats will have to have their OLine in tact to defeat the Hawks. The starters must be healthy. We don't have good depth there.

Wilson is a top level QB who knows how to win in a big spot something Manning hasn't been able to do. However BB has had success dealing with mobile QB's over the years. this years Secondary has the talent to allow BB to play Wilson the way he wants, ie controlled rush, lane discipline, keep him in the pocket. The Seattle WR group isn't as talented as many we have faced.

Early this year we were very vulnerable to the run inside. Since the KC disaster we have add Silinga off temp IR and added Allen Branch we have the depth now to clog the inside making it for opponents to run.

Against the Seattle D we could see a dink and dunk approach with 3 step drops and quick passes to neutralize the Hawks pas rush. I can also see some Jumbo packages with a OT Fleming playing a TE slot, a FB, and Gronk as an inline blocker Blount running inside. Sometimes with a fast D the best solution is not to out run it but just pound it right at them.

I fully expect to see Seattle and NE in AZ on Feb 1.

Welcome to the board BTW.

Actually, very few of the posters in that thread gave the patriots their due. Most were pretty arrogant and in fact most seemed pretty uninformed about our defense. But that's okay. If the two teams do meet, I hope that your players are as arrogant and uninformed.

I think Dallas could be a bit of a problem because of the run game. I think having a successful running game is the best way to go at your squad. Then again I wouldn't hold my breath on Romo coming up big in a playoff game. Just make sure you beat down those front running Packers. New England played right into there hands spotting them 13 points in Lambeau. Outside of that stadium facing a deficit, I believe they will crumble.

Seattle's defense looks awesome, but some of it can be mitigated by how you play them. Sherman plays only one side of the field. So run spread, line Tyms up on the right (Sherman's side) and make them put their best cover guy on your worst WR, and then let Gronk, Edelman, LaFell, and Amendola/Vereen work against the rest of the Sea secondary. Gotta hope that the line holds up, of course.

It's not easy because the rest of Seattle's defense is really good besides Sherman, and obviously if it was simple the guys in the NFL, who know a heck of a lot more than I do, would have exposed this already. But they CAN be beaten. They gave up 30 to SD, 30 to Dal, 28 to StL, 24 to Oak, and 24 to KC. You *can* score some points against them from time to time.

Defensively, I think NE has the horses to slow them down and/or neutralize them.

NE has the best special teams in the league and they may need to get either a turnover or a big special teams play.

But that game is absolutely winnable. ZERO chance they fold like the Broncos did.

To me the biggest question mark is whether the pats would be able to contain russell wilson in the running game.

I think that's one of the main points of emphasis on D if we play them. That's not just a bail out for them, that's something they're looking to do to win a ball game.

Thanks for the thoughts

I think if the pats face Seattle; 3 keys will determine the outcome.

How the patriots oline keeps Tom upright and gives him time
If Russell Wilson gets to use his legs for key yardage gains
And how successful wright and Gronk are

Problem is that the strength of the Pats defense--the secondary--is neutralized against a player like Wilson because we have to play zone. Meanwhile the strength of our offense--the passing game--plays right into the strength of their defense.

I don't think you have to play zone against him. I think the Pats' superior DBs allow them to play tight man-to-man without fear, and that allows them to use Collins or another DB as a spy on Wilson. Teams that can't play good M2M defense need to commit more guys to double and that opens up Wilson's running lanes.

Dallas will be a tough test for Seattle

I think the Cowboys offense matches up with Seattle's defense the same as ours. Though, the Cowboys are much more persistent at running the ball which is why they are so effective. That Seattle front seven can be run on, though they have gotten better with Bobby Wagner coming back.

I agree its pretty pointless to break down a team that odds are we won't face (even assuming both teams have a 70% chance of winning each playoff game, there is still only a 24% chance that they will meet in the SB). All I can say is that an offensive performance along the lines of yesterday is not going to cut it against any AFC playoff opponent, let alone the best of the NFC.

Did you even consider that BB was resting his O-line injured, against the Jets, rather than the Bills?

Besides the scoreboard was a one point win; but could have been a four or even a nine point win. But BB was satisfied to use Victory formations after first and Goal from inside the 5yard line, with about two minutes to play.

True

If these two teams play, it will come down to turnovers, maybe a special teams play and who executes better that day.

The reality is Seattle systemically matches up well with Denver. However, their defensive performance the past two years is not materially different from the Patriots efforts over the same period.

What leads you to believe that Seattle's Oline matches well with our Dline?

I think the fact that Bill will more than likely run a "contain the QB" defense will neglect a pass rush. Much like against the Jets.

Troll? Who acted like a ***** when the Patriots weren't playing well against the Dolphins? Homers like you need to look in the mirror and realize they're just as bad as chicken littles.

That is utterly ridiculous !! I could understand your stance if the team in question were the Bucs, Jaguars, Raiders etc. But your ilk, (you know the big deer), is wholly incredible for a dynastic team in its 14th consecutive winning and once again dominant season.

Lol, none of these match-ups favor New England which is why I believe that if these two teams met, Belichick and McDaniels would bring the tendency busters out of the playbook. But until we get the O-line playing back up to it's potential, Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril, Tony McDaniel and co. won't even make those other match-ups a factor.

On Defense, Seattle plays that Cover-1/3, takes away the deep ball and flies around the middle. They win on discipline and aggression. Seattle wouldn't have to fear our deep game. Thomas will sit back while everyone else cheats up. Wright and Wagner can be affective bracketing Gronk as well. We'd have to have success against Chancellor, Maxwell and Simon to move the chains. We'd have to employ 3 step drops and run great routes. CAMERON FLEMING NEEDS TO RETURN so we can run our counters and traps on the inside.

Against their O, we're at a disadvantage because we don't have a 3rd linebacker. I won't count Casillas beccause he is a - in the run game. We'd have to sell out on the run. Baldwin and Kearse get the job done and are versatile, but we'd have to depend on Revis and Browner to cover them. Arrington would get Richardson. Moeki would be their healthiest TE, so we dodge a bullet not having to cover Helfet or Zach Miller. This would probably be a game where NE whips out the 3-4 to contain the run. Silliga, Wilfork and Branch earn their paychecks.

We don't match up well against Seattle on offensively. Defensively, we can hang. We only beat this team by being physical and fundamental, ala SB36.

I don't think tuneups against the likes of Stanton, Sanchez, Kaepernick, Hill or Linley prepares the Sea hawk Defense well to go against a Tom Brady. That is the ultimate mismatch in the Patriots favor.
