Crafting a contract extension for Darrelle Revis and the New England Patriots - Updated 12/23

The Pats have leverage. They could choose to pay Revis 20m. In which case, they will have paid and average of 16m per season for 2 of his best years (12+20/2=16). But I suspect they will want to negotiate an extension and tear up the old contract so he will have a lower cap hit in 2015.

Why not go with a funny money contract to make everyone happy?

7 years 120m
Year 1 13
Year 2 14
Year 3 15
Year 4 16
Year 5 20
Year 6 20
Year 7 22

Average Yearly value 17.1m
Bonus/Guaranteed Money 30m
Highest Paid CB in the history of the game...

This is a 2 year $30M contract. After that the team has the option to pay the following of new money: $12M, $16M $20M, $20M and $22M. This contract would be more attractive with a $20M year 3 salary.
=========================
The $30M is a bit higher than Miguel's suggestion of $26.5M. My suspicion is neither the team nor Revis has no reason to look beyond a 4 year deal.

The Patriots will get a hometown discount from Revis the same way that the Red Sox would have gotten a hometown discount from Lester: You have to sign him before he goes back into the market.

And Revis would like to avoid going into the market...um, why exactly?

It's not like the guy would be worried he'd get no offers or only lowball offers.

It's not really a matter of him avoiding going to market. It's a matter of the Patriots being able to keep him off the market for another season.

Revis doesn't care about the headline figures...he's all about 'straight cash, homie...' ;)

I will add a couple of more scenarios to the post.

Just include your proposal in this thread with all the details and I will add in my next update.

Cant afford to not bring this guy back. He's completely changed our defense.

I think a critical part of any proposal is guarantees in the 3rd year.

Otherwise, the contract is simply a 2-year deal with a team option (if the 2017 salary isn't huge) or a 2-year contract without a real option if there is a huge salary, say $22M.

So, yes, I the AAV is important (Miguel gives all of these). But also important is the amount of guarantees and when these are given. So, I would add $5M of guarantees (perhaps for injury only) to Miguel's contract scenarios.

Do folks think that a $26.5M guarantee with a 2 year AAV of $15.750M enough for Revis?

No. The AAV is fine, but I think we're looking at something in the range of Sherman/Peterson guaranteed money ($40-45M), over 3 years.

Here's one I haven't seen yet.

PATRIOTS pick up next year's salary.
Then they franchise him for 2016 & 2017.

What is AAV for that scenario?

This is the starting point and leverage for the contract extension.

His cap hits would be
$25 million in 2015
$30 million in 2016
$36 million in 2017

That can't be right

2015: $25 million

I don't know the franchise formula, but it is based on the average salary of the top cb's.
I was thinking half of what you listed for years 2016 & 2017

I should've pointed out that the franchise tag number calculation has this provision. It can be the 120% of the player's prior year cap number if 120% is higher than the usual formula result.

Thanks for that nugget.

That changes how I look at this 2 year deal.
Good job by Revis to protect himself.

I thought the Patriots had the leverage.

I was wrr.wrr. wrong.

Schefter weighs in...

“I think the Revis story is still playing out,” Schefter said. “Darrelle Revis has been a great player for a long time. I’ve always look at him as a businessman — that he’s going to go where the best deal is. If the best deal is in New England, then fine. Does he like it there enough? If they win a Super Bowl, where he gets a Super Bowl on his resume, and he says, ‘Now I can just go for the best deal truly.’ Or is it worth it to compromise a little bit there to continue playing on in New England where you’ve got a shot to win the Super Bowl? That’s possible, too. The Darrelle Revis story obviously has yet to be written. I think he’d be open to going back to New England. But when I think of Darrelle Revis I think business first, always.”

Added Schefter: “The circumstances were such last year that it just played perfectly for both sides. And I’m sure that they both would like to be together next year in a perfect world. But again, we’ll see how Darrelle approaches that and what his thoughts are there. I’m sure he’s been very happy playing there this year, but again, it’s going to come down to money.”
