I have to admit that I'm surprised it's taken me this long to find an awful draft, but, anyhow . . .

This one comes to you from CBSSports.com's Rob Rang, no less:

Marcus Peters, CB, Washington: The Patriots boast one of the NFL's better secondaries with veteran CBs Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner on the outside, but they may seek to infuse more youth at the position - and stop Peters' potential tumble out of the first round.

Because the Patriots actually care about that sort of thing. . . .

The former Washington star offers terrific length, physicality and ball-skills but comes with all kinds of character questions after being dismissed by the Huskies. His talent is undeniable and New England has the leadership in the locker room to consider the gamble.

And that's exactly what the Patriots look for in their first-rounders.

I'm not sure he is but others do think that he's a top 10 talent. Playing devil's advocate here but getting a top 10 talent at the end of the first round should always be a consideration, particularly when re-signing Revis isn't yet a given. As for his character issues, we have one draftee in prison for murder. BB takes character risks both in the draft and FA (Blount/Talib).

Character risks are one thing, but getting dismissed from a program is another. So is using a first-rounder on a player with major risks. The one time they tried that (Meriweather) didn't work out all that well.

Hey, I wouldn't draft him, but like I said, just playing devil's advocate.

2 round mock from Eric Lambert at NFLMocks has the Pats taking DE Nate Orchard at 32 and WR Ty Montgomery at 64:

Ugh. Not a fan of either player, and don't want a WR in the 2nd round.

TJ Clemmings goes at #33, Malcolm Brown at #34. I'd take one of those 2 guys at #32, then trade up from #64 for LSU DE Danielle Hunter, who goes #52 in this mock. Owamagbe Odighizuwa isn't in the first 2 rounds, and would be an option at #64 if you don't like Hunter.

Clemmings-Hunter, plus Jordan Phillips with a trade up in the 3rd, would be a dream draft for me.

Whichever team ends up drafting him, the people who make their uniforms should demand hazard pay. ;)

The only people that need to worry are the sack statisticians and game log writers.

I tried to watch a little of the LSU/A&M game. Aggies hardly had the ball in the first half. Hunter was directly responsible for the first TD. Right in his hole. Harrison let him slide down and instead of pressing the hole he kinda just stood there and got mauled by h-back RB ran right by him for 40 yards and a TD.

He didn't play the first couple drives of the second half and I didn't watch the end of the game. Not sure if he was hurt or not. #46 Tashawn Bower looked good from what I saw. I'll have to check out some other games. But, he looks really skinny. So was Jamie Collins, but he's a linebacker. Not sure Hunter is stout enough to play in our scheme. I'll have to find some games he played well in. I'll check the Bama game and see what he was like against them.

I went to Berkeley in October to watch Cal play Washington. I went away more impressed with Thompson and his 100 yard fumble return.

Marcus Peters would be the biggest boom or bust pick in recent years. If they did happen to take him I'd be ok with it because that tells me the Patriots think they can handle the situation. If they didn't then it just confirms the obvious. Too many character flaws. Let it be known though, he was a top 10 pick talent wise and shouldn't be easily dismissed without knowing all the details we as fans aren't privy too. Sometimes a piece of trash is a piece of trash. Other times bad decisions in young kids lives are wake up calls to turn their life around. This is part of the interview and background checks most of us fans will never be part of. Bryant and Mathieu quickly come to mind.

A certain Vontaze Burfict springs to mind too. Josh Shaw is a name to remember too. He was listed as a first rounder before USC suspended him. He'll be back for The Holiday Bowl. That Delvin Breaux we looked at recently impressed me and I think that's the direction we go.

He is sticking with the Marcus Peters pick, saying that the Patriots only have Revis until the end of the year. Not a super creative mock draft, maybe he just wants to put Marcus Peters in the first round.

Peters tried to strangle his position coach. Twice. From what I've read.

Hernandez was a 4th rounder. Burfict was an udfa.

There's character issues and then there's psychotic. There's late round or udfa flyers and there's first round picks. Big diffetence.

Well, that's a major Red Flag, isn't it?

Everybody gets beat, now and then...But failing twice reflects poorly not only on'is Mechanics and'is Paw Power, but on'is Focus and'is Capacity to Process Coaching and improve his Techniques.

We all wanted the pats to take Colt Lyerla, crazy people shouldn't be allowed to be good at sports

Burfict and Hernandez were actually both projected first rounders early on, as was Lyerla and Peters, Peters is less of a red flag than them though as crazy as it sounds

Many levels, all of them wrong.

http://fishduck.com/2015/01/2015-nfl-draft-marcus-mariota-the-new-england-patriots/

Over the next five weeks, FishDuck.com Feature Writer Caleb Couturie will be analyzing the 25 teams in the NFL Draft that may look to select Marcus Mariota.

No. 25: The New England Patriots

What it does mean, though, is that the Patriots need to start considering a life after Brady sooner rather than later, and who better than a talent such as Marcus Mariota for Bill Belichick to work with, especially if NE doesn’t believe current backup Jimmy Garoppolo is the future of the franchise.

HOW IT CAN HAPPEN:

Now what’s important to remember about this project is that we are simply weighing all the teams that at least will take more than a passing look at Mariota as a prospect and what he’s worth. With that said, if NE was totally sold on Mariota, here’s what it would take to get him: NE would have to trade a dependable skill player, such as WR Julian Edelman, 2015 first- and second-round picks and 2016 first-round pick to Tampa Bay for the No. 1 pick. NE doesn’t have a lot of assets; surprisingly, considering how good they are. A lot of their success is directly related to Rob Gronkowski, a player who is absolutely off limits in trade discussions. Outside of Edelman, the Patriots don’t have a lot of players worth a substantial trade. Luckily for NE, Edelman and two extra draft picks should be enough for TB to give up its pick in 2015. Edelman, lined up in the slot with Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson on the outside, could help create one of the deadliest receiving cores in the NFL. With NE’s pick, TB could also likely take FSU’s Nick O’Leary and completely revamp the offense. Building a solid receiving corps, and giving them a year to develop, could really help TB in 2016 if they decided to take a franchise QB in 2016 instead.

For NE, giving up Edelman hurts but they’d certainly overcome as they always seem to do. Mariota is a special talent, and there’s no doubt that Belichick sees that. Belichick is used to working with prospects who came in with a cloud of doubt surrounding them (see Brady, Tom- taken in the sixth round). Although Mariota doesn’t fit the Pats’ scheme now, there’s no doubt Belichick’s genius could devise a scheme that played to the QB’s strengths. Also, although it’s only hypothetical, the thought of Mariota on a rollout with the option to either run or throw to Gronk is pretty tantalizing. . . .

Yup, he overthought that one. Square block meet round hole.

That one may take the cake from now until the draft and it thoroughly makes no sense for either team

From Rob Rang:

32. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

(12-4)Quinten Rollins, CB, Miami (Ohio): Maintaining the championship roster will prove difficult, especially with star CB Darrelle Revis due a staggering $20 million in base salary and bonuses. With only one season of college football under his belt, Rollins is unquestionably a gamble. He was a four-year standout on the RedHawks basketball team, however, and wowed with his instincts and agility after switching to the gridiron last season. With seven interceptions, Rollins won MAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2014. He was also the most impressive defensive back at the Senior Bowl.

Again, exactly what Belichick craves in a first-round pick.
