Pats extend Cannon 2 years

Who thinks that Belichick will pay over $18M of new money to the OT position this year? I presume that Vollmer would start and reach any game incentives. The cap effect is actually over $19M.

SOLDER ($7.438M)

VOLLMER ($6.000M) his bonus is excluded
$2.25 + $1.00M + 1.00M +1.75M

CANNON ($4.750M)
$3.2M + $1.2M + $.3M +.1M
=====================
My expectation is that Solder will never count $7.438M against the cap. He will sign a new contract before the season starts or be a free agent. I suppose they could trade him if they thought that anyone wanted to guarantee Solder $7.438M for his 2015 services.
We do not know Cannons contract yet.

@AndyJohnson Both Field Yates and Jeff Howe have reported the details

If Solder stays (at a lower cost most likely) Cannon remains a backup and is paid $2-3mm a year. This is hardly debilitating for a guy you consider a viable backup at one one of the most necessary positions on the field.

Where do get the $2M-$3M?

Cannon will get over $4M for this year ($3.2M bonus + $1.2M salary + $.3M weight bonus + plus $.1M for being active). That total is $4.8M whether he starts or not.

The club then has an option to pay him more than $3.5M or so for 2016. His $2016 salary is $3.4M and his roster bonus is $.250M. Again this money is his whether he is a starter or not.

I thought I saw there were playing incentives. Apparently I was wrong.

Cannon has 250K worth of playing-time incentives in both 2015 and in 2016. His weight bonus is 100K each year. He can earn $15,625 for each game he is active in 2015 and in 2016

"While Cannon’s career Pass Blocking Efficiency (PBE) of 91.1 at guard is among the worst at the position, his career PBE at tackle (96.1) is among the best.
Those numbers aren’t guaranteed to pan out over a whole season, but Cannon did earn a +3.4 overall grade at tackle starting the final eight games last year in place of Sebastian Vollmer. And perhaps most importantly, has been credited Cannon with just 1 sack allowed in his 454 career snaps at tackle."

Miguel gave the numbers. As you can see, Cannon makes big money even without starting.

Since I already admitted my error, was this comment necessary?

I don't understand why you are being so touchy.

You weren't wrong. There are indeed game incentives. They are just too small to matter with regard to the issue you raised.

The more I think about it...there isn't a snowball's chance in Hades that Solder sees the $7.4m next year.

I know PFF can sometimes have unreliable and erratic data but based on what I, and others saw after Vollmer went down vs MIA, Cannon did a very, very good job.

Touchy? It's just a matter of polite etiquette that when someone admits error, you don't subsequently point out their mistake to them. It really is odd that you needed to say that I was wrong - even elaborating on it - once again in this post.

Cannon really stumbled on the field again. Came in and quickly gave up a sack, and then had a false start.

The announcing crew & coverage was terrible - clearly the interesting part of the first half was how the Jets were attacking the offensive line as they racked up four first-half sacks, and then in the second half how the Patriots shifted around their offensive line with Fleming in at guard.

The Patriots really missed Connolly, and Cannon again looked poor. I'd like to see some of the All-22 or get a better view of what the line was doing - no one looked great in the first half. It does concern me that the investment was in the (admittedly younger) Cannon over extending the currently-more- effective Connolly.

Baffled why they gave this guy a contract at all. He's pretty bad everywhere.

Maybe just needs more time.

And he doesn't start...something is atrange. Guess they're planning on getting rid of solder or vollmer.

Hope they play cannon a lot in the last week. Then if he's no good maybe revoke the contract.

I mean you no disrespect.

Maybe the problem is with your evaluation of Cannon.

This happens all the time. A poster, or even most posters have on evaluation of a player, and Belichick (with a bit more information) has another.
