WR in the 2015 draft

Part of the problem with drafting a WR is that they are often the 3rd-4th read and Brady never gets to them because one of the first 2 reads were open. I have seen Tim Wright, Tyms, Amendola and Dobson open but Brady does not look there way. I understand why people say Dobson is a bust but I think alot of it is on Brady. I am not saying there is anything wrong with Brady just that he has more confidence in the vets. It took Lafell quite awhile before he was getting a volume of targets.

I'm going to disagree with this. My opinion is Dobson isn't on the field because of Dobson. 2 false starts in 3 series doesn't cut it. If you can't be relied on to line up properly how is someone going to throw him the ball? If he was a ringer he would be out there playing and contributing because the coaches would identify that in practice. He is injured more often than not as well. I'm not declaring bust because he has shown potential from last season and he is only in his second year, but he certainly does have to step it up next year or the term may just stick.

As far as Brady not getting to his 3rd and 4th reads I think you need to watch again. Depending on the play called, Edelman Gronkowski 1-2, Lafell 3, Vereen,Blount/Gray/ 4. You watch any HOF QB play and he is going to miss his 4th reads from time to time due to defensive pressure, what side of the field the QB is facing, or he may see the read but his feet/body are in no position to make the throw.

Add Fitz/Colston/Andre if cut (in that order), not comfortable letting us "develop" any more WRs to start, I like late rounders for depth and future contributors for us now in '15 like Jamison Crowder and Jordan Taylor

PS: Brady to Fitz has been a dream of mind dating back to 2009, make it happen if possible, doubt ARZ lets him leave though

Don't know if bb could afford a fitzgerald. He usually goes for the smart wr who is a bargain I would think. Someone who knows where to go would be big. Seems to be a hurdle there.

I'm also thinking boyce could still come through.

So here's something, which I know is pure coincidence and means nothing but it moderately amuses me:

In 2011, BB worked out DE Allen Bailey pre draft. In 2012, BB drafted DE Chandler Jones.

In 2012 BB worked out LB Lavonte David. In 2013 BB draftedLB Jamie Collins.

In 2013, BB worked out Florida DT Earl Okine, in 2014 BB drafted Florida DT Dominique Easley.

In 2014 BB worked out 6'5 WR Kelvin Benjamin. In 2015, BB drafts 6'5" WR Devin Funchess?

I find this actually interesting. We know how much of a smokescreen the Patriots pre draft workouts are. For the first time somebody showed me a thin, maybe coincidental thread in there.

Wouldn't the Benjamin link be Rashad Greene?

I was focused on the size. BB worked out a big receiver and Funchess is that guy this year.

I don't think funchess has the speed to be the bigger receiver bb wants. He's fast for a tight end but not enough to play wr.

If you go by the middle forty time on NFL Draft Scout which tends to be fairly accurate, Devin Funchess runs a 4.63 forty. Kelvin Benjamin ran a 4.61 at the combine. The lines are becoming pretty blurred between TEs and WRs these days. I maintain that a TE that never, or rarely, blocks inline is not a TE but a (very) tall slot receiver. Tim Wright is barely a TE to be frank. In fact of TEs that have run over a 100 routes this season, Tim Wright has the highest percentage of snaps taken in the slot.

And please don't take my comparison too closely - I was having some fun with some coincidences I spotted.

Lately was a good pickup. I can see bb going that route again this offseason and not using a draft pick on a wr this year until day three.

Manx found a receiver from William and Mary who would be ideal here tre mcbride I believe. So there's that.

It's hard to judge how refined he is, but there's plenty to work with there. Smelter is still my favourite day three guy but McBride pushed him fairly close.

I haven't seen a whole lot more than the highlight film of McBride, and he hasn't played against that much good competition. I agree he's intriguing as a day 3 guy, but I wouldn't consider him to be anything close to Smelter as a potential prospect. I think Smelter is a legitimate 1st round talent who could be available on day 3; I think he's a better receiver than Dorial Green-Beckham. Other than being the flavor du jour, what specifically do you see that would make McBride close to that kind of a talent?

Speed, physique, body control, ability to high point, RAC and return ability. Check out the second catch

Edit: also, I said Smelter was my favourite day three guy but as you know I've considered him a day two guy prior to his injury. I said McBride pushed Smelter close as my favourite day three guy, not that McBride pushed Smelter close in terms of overall grade. Still impressed by McBride though.

Could it be that I'm actually higher on Smelter now than you are? How ironic would that be?

I think Smelter could be the WR equivalent of Jamie Collins. Not as versatile, or as freakishly athletic. But very, very high upside.

Not really, I still really like him but I also recognise that he might run a 4.6 or4.7 and that reduces his value. I'm the one saying he can play three roles on this team; Amendola, Lafell, Wright.

I think he's a potential #1 WR. I think he has 4.5 speed - Dez Bryant range, and plenty fast enough. Even if he's slower I think he has Anquan Bolden/Keenan Allen potential.

Well if you think he's the next Dez Bryant you can claim him ;). I'm happy with the next Brandon LaFell.

Don't let Mr Al Tippett see you say that. He's an UDFA at best remember.

I think the pats target eddie royal in the offseason.
