So as people know I am on the keep our D intact badnwagon. However If a cuts needs to be made to keep Revis then McCourty is the low hanging fruit due to his contract situation. Let's be 100% honest here. McCourty has had a good year but not a great year. He has been late several time and taken bad angels when he should have known better.

He was late on the Nelson TD then and late on the Wallace TD. On one he was too far over and not playing center field like he should. On the other it was bad situational awareness. You need to know Butler is on Wallace and should cheat to that accordingly. Now he has made good plays too and has made good coverage of TEs at CB (like he did in SD).

He is top 10 at FS but not top 5 and never will be i think. If he gets offered a big contract I don't think you pony up the cash to keep him. Letting McCourty walk and drafting a player to replace him would save about 7M for the next 4 years and allow you the flexibility to sign everyone else as well as pick up a FA somewhere.

The question is what do you do if he is gone? I don't believe Ryan should be there. Harmon has shown some good things but is he a starting FS? I don't think so right now.

Either you sign someone or you draft someone. If you draft someone Holliman probably gets the longest look. While a different style than McCourty (more aggressive and ball hawkish and less reliable as a center fielder) he looks to be the best FS in this draft and the best option to replace him if we decide to.

Thoughts?

Holliman is a really bad tackler by all accounts and the skinny seems to be that that's because of a shoulder injury (he favours one shoulder when tackling).

Way too risky in my book and I don't think BB will like his inability to tackle. If we're not re-signing McCourty I'd rather keep Harmon who knows the defense and has done well - I read today that he's only been targeted once in all his coverage snaps - and draft someone like Anthony Harris from Virginia who's a smart and experienced coverage safety.

Sorry.

From Bob McGinn's annual quotes from anonymous NFL scouts:

"He needs to go back to school," said one scout. "He's horrible. He can't make a tackle to save his life. He's got pretty good instincts but he's not that athletic."

That seems to be a fairly common view, from what I can tell. I haven't studied him in detail, but I'm approaching Holliman with a big "buyer beware" red flag.

I wouldnt be surprised if they let him walk. I don't think it'd be connected with drafting his replacement though. Too iffy.

I also wish McCourty would turn around sometimes instead of either letting the guy catch it or interfering. Could have been called for interfering in the end zone last week and the ball actually hit him in the back on one play.

If you have to, you let Wilfork go and sign McCourty. You actually save money by re-upping Revis. That should be 8-10 million. More than enough for McCourty's first year on a new deal.

Yes Revis will be cut or resigned but it's illogical to simply assume they'd give that to mccourty. It becomes cap space and if they think he's worth it, considering all the other cap needs then they'll sign him, if not they won't. Same as everyone else. Revis and McCourty are separate decisions.

The franchise tag for Safety $8.433 million last year, hopefully they can work something out.

I can see them tagging mccourty only to work out a deal later. I have a feeling the pats aren't gonna let mccourty walk easily if at all.

Holliman is a ballhawk which is fine, but I can see him going for the ball to much and gettin burnt alot. He can't tackle at all and it's not something I would want anywhere around this team.

I really don't see how McCourty has had anything other than a great year

Comes with the territory if you play a position where your name is never mentioned if you do a great job.

Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor get hyped even though they had a less consistent season than Devin. Because they make some hard hitting highlight plays they are so "awesome"..

But McCourty takes one bad angle in a season that unfortunately results in a touchdown and he is overrated.

He will be resigned and he will be back.

I agree. And Tom Brady threw a pick six earlier this year. He should be cut and replaced with this QB for ULL whom I just saw play some team in some bowl game without throwing a single int. Can't have QBs who throw ints.

You do understand that an opposing qb can control a free safety by looking him off. We can say mccourty was late getting over, but there are more than one opposing receiver on the field that he is responsible for.

Holliman is the consummate Ball Control Weapon. Either he picks it off, or he gets rolled for an 80 Yard TouchDown on a Slant. Either way, we get the Ball back. Sweet.

So Tavon Wilson's rookie season then.
