The San Francisco 49ers have released defensive tackle Ray McDonald, hours after news broke that police searched his home in connection with an investigation into a sexual assault.

General Manager Trent Baalke said the 49ers made the decision to terminate McDonald’s contract because of a pattern of behavior that the team finds unacceptable.

No use of the NFL's new discipline procedure here...

Skeptical. This guy was kept while SF was in contention under their "let the process play out stance" despite coach's insistence they didn't stand for misbehaviour re women and children. Yet, as soon as they are out, so is this POS... Coincidence ? Maaaaaaybe. But doesn't smell right.

In all fairness to SF he wasn't charged.

When it comes to abusing or assaulting women, the number of accusations matters a LOT. Past a certain point, the odds that the truth of he said/she said is on the side of him gets to be pretty low.

Also, even if something doesn't rise to the level of a provable crime, it can be pretty bad behavior -- and again, frequency matters a lot. If you do something wrong and repeat the misdeed, that can be a lot less excusable than a one-time heat-of-the-moment.

No "sign the beast" posts yet? You guys are losing your touch.

And he hasn't been charged with anything in this rape case, yet, either. So why release him now?

The wheels are coming off the 49ers bus this year.

I was thinking the same thing. Apparently McDonald's pattern of behavior was unacceptable only after the 49ers were eliminated from playoff contention

It wasn't a "pattern" until the second allegation. As soon as it became a "pattern", he was cut. Stop trying to make something out of nothing.

Who is to say the league will not punish him as well? Better late than never when it comes to SF cutting ties.

The point is that, for all the screaming about how the NFL needs to have a policy, the 49ers sure as hell didn't need it to make their move.

No charges first time. No charges, so far, this time.

No pattern, unless the pattern is of someone not getting charged for anything.

I know you're just trolling, but there is now a pattern of being a suspect in two heinous crimes. That's more than enough justification to move on from a player in today's climate.

I'm not trolling at all, and 2 incidents which have not resulted in a single criminal charge is not a pattern. 2 of anything is not a pattern.

Use your head. If there's more that hasn't come out, that could, possibly, constitute a pattern.

I thought that team was going to be around awhile in contention. Horrible contract to one of the worst QBs in the league, a few key free agent departures and injuries later with a head coach with his foot out the door. To pile on the criminal activity and the fact that Aldon Smith is probably leaving for the money id call that franchise a shooting star.

Let's be realistic here. There is tremendous pressure on pro players this year - more so than ever - to act civilized instead of like undisciplined thugs. Which, by the way, I think is long overdue. The front office in all sports is taking heat for not disciplining their players and they (front office) don't like it. Regular people are sick and tired of seeing pro players and politicians being held to a different standard than them. These people have life handed to them on a silver spoon and they act entitled.

I will say tho that Adrian Peterson's deal is a rotten piece of crap. Here he gets the same, or worse, penalty for trying to prevent his kid from becoming a thug as a thug gets for being one. Sure AD was probably too harsh, but he did it to help the kid in the long run. People like Ray Rice, Ray Lewis, Pacman Jones, etc, and on and on ad naseum, intended to hurt someone.

I am an OU Sooner fan and the deal with Joe Mixon is like that. He put a girl in the hospital and the D.A. is doing his dead level best to cover it up. OU wants him to play for them, and my opinion is that he should never be in a Sooner uniform, never take a snap. Needless to say, that doesn't make me real popular around here. :)

That was the excuse the jurors used in the McMartin preschool trials. So many accusations, that it had to be true...
