Steve Maneri: Signed to 53 man roster

Interesting signing of Maneri. Pretty much a blocking TE or end of line tackle. How are Hooman and/or Fleming affected if any.
What will the active 46 look like for this week?
Could this be a one week signing?

The Pats were reportedly one of several teams that scouted him heavily. I like him better than David Fales, who they reportedly tried to sign last week.

He was so bad in camp and preseason that the Rams decided to cut him and roll with 2 QBs... who were Shaun Hill and Austin Davis.

I wouldn't hold my breath that he'll be anything more than a tackling dummy.

I'm glad they signed a QB to the PS. With all the injuries to QB's in the NFL, it made me a little uneasy that we only carried 2. If there were an injury to either of our two QB's, who would be our 3rd that could step in.
I had visions of them making a late night call to Tebow!

In the last game they had Solder reporting in and out as tackle eligible. Every time he rotated out he had to sit a play. Odd.

Maneri, potentially, can signficantly reduce that as a professional end-of-line blocker.
Of course, it is highly unlikely this has any impact on the coming game against the Jets. Almost certainly will be inactive.

I'd presume that Edelman is the emergency option.

There usually is a non-QB who at least at some point in camp gets a few "just in case" reps. It used to be Kevin Faulk, to my understanding.

He's certainly a developmental prospect, and a long shot. Any QB signed to the PS shouldn't be viewed as more than that. But there's some upside.

Maneri is a monster - he was in Patriots camp this year. Good pick up to add blocking depth at TE as the weather gets worse and the running game promises to get more prominent.

I don't remember his blocking, but I seem to remember passes hitting him in the middle of the back and the like. Hopefully he'll either stay on the PS or only be used for blocking.

I have to presume that Fleming isn't healthy enough to be the 6th OL. The other options are Hooman and Solder. Solder is an OK option except that he then has to stay out a play before coming back at LT.

Kevin Faulk definitely played scout QB at times, most famously in the role of Kordell Stewart. Between that and the direct snaps, along with the fact that he played QB in high school, I assumed he was the emergency QB too.

But at least some seasons it was Troy Brown over Faulk.

There is a reason he is on the roster. Congrats to him. Hope he can be useful!

Is Maneri's signing more of a prognosis on Fleming's return, or an indictment of Cannon (aka The $9M Man)'s performance?
And what does that say about Jake the Fake Bequette when both Chandler Jones and now Ras-I Easley
have been lost, he wasn't promoted in an attempt to replace their end-of-line/penetrating abilities?

Not wanting to over react to Maneri's signing (he could be gone tomorrow) it's not really optimal having an OL as the 6th blocker. A TE who's a strong blocker with some pass catching ability is certainly preferable both in terms of predictability and functionality. I know Maneri isn't a top TE, obviously, but he gives a short yardage receiving option that Fleming and Cannon don't.

I kind of liked Manieri in preseason (the little we saw of him). I'm hopeful for another nice surprise like Jonas Gray. Maybe he has progressed in practice to the point where he is a solid option for augmenting our run game. That would be a nice Christmas present, now wouldn't it?

Does this mean we are planning a heavy dose of the run game against the Jets? Seems like an odd choice as they are stout against the run.
And if we manage to make it work, ten points probably wins the game. The jets offense is atrocious. If we get up early I see no problem limiting to shelf talent reps while attempting a ball control offense.

I would also love to see us come out in a two tight end (Gronk/maneiri), Develin and Blount/Gray in the backfield, and Lafell. Plenty of beef to run behind, ample options to go play action or pass against a "base" defense. Hell, same thing, swap maneiri for Edelman(if healthy)/Thyms. Don't think it is necessarily the best game plan, but could certainly be effective enough if the oline can get going.

In short, more running early. Get the snot blowers on their toes rather than their heels. Let them get after a very physical jets dline rather than the other way around. If it works, great, continue it. If not (two possessions please, and no ****ing Vereen, okay Josh?), change it up. If Edelman is banged up, I'd like to see his snaps limited in what should be an easily winnable game.

This also gave cannon reps at lt. Given the contract extension, it makes sense. It also gives solder a minor amount of rest, while making for some serious beef on the over load side of the line. I also think solder is the more athletic of the two, a better potential candidate in space as the eligible receiver.

This gives belichick the option of Brady being inactive against Buffalo.

I don't think players are going to be sitting against the Bills, no matter how the other games turn out. That would give those players 3 weeks off before they played again. I think they'd be worried about rustiness.

2 receptions, 5 yards, 2 touchdowns. You heard it here first.:)
