Steve Maneri: Signed to 53 man roster

And a QB to the PS, according to Reiss' twitter.

Patriots adding QB Garrett Gilbert and TE Steve Maneri, as both have lockers set up in locker room. Practice squad & roster shuffle in play.

Less Hooman.. please!

Maneri is a monster - he was in Patriots camp this year. Good pick up to add blocking depth at TE as the weather gets worse and the running game promises to get more prominent.

Garrett Gilbert was drafted 15 spots lower than Tom Brady in the 6th Round of the 2014 Draft by the St. Louis Rams. Nice symmetry there. Let the new dynasty begin!

What's the QB for? Is it to limit Brady's reps in practice to rest his arm? Or to scout team Geno Smith? Or just a good time for a looksy?

This guy was once called the best QB in Texas history. Something like that.

A little background on Gilbert. Son of pro QB (Gale Gilbert). Highly recruited out of the Austin area, went to UT (my alma mater). Played in the national championship game against Alabama when Colt McCoy got hurt early on in a crunching hit by Rolando McClain. Gilbert played ok. Big things were expected when he became a full time starter in 2010, but he never produced, then lost his starting QB job to Colt's younger brother Case. Gilbert then transferred to a smaller school in Texas. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Rams and was cut in the last round of cuts. Can't imagine him falling into a better situation than here in NE

I think this is his sixth signing (2nd by us) in five years.

How big is Maneri at this point? Is he still the ~310 guy who was developing into a tackle? Or the smaller guy who was really an oversized TE?

Maneri signed to the active roster is a big deal. We might see Gronkowski's reps decline on blocking downs to preserve him for the playoffs.

Does this mean we are planning a heavy dose of the run game against the Jets? Seems like an odd choice as they are stout against the run.

Bills are coming up too and they're really good against the pass.

I would assume they're looking to the playoffs too, not this week against the Jets.

The old late season shadow roster move. BB always has a backup plan.

Athletically/talent wise Gilbert is a very intriguing prospect. He also has a good pedigree his father Gale was an NFL QB.

Obviously JAG has gotten too complacent and needs competition

Garrett Gilbert was my day 3 QB binky in the last draft. He came on strong at SMU under June Jones, and wowed at his Pro Day:

Gilbert (6-foot-3 7/8, 221 pounds) threw 88 passes on his pro day and showed off his accuracy by completing 87 of them. He's got good arm strength and probably moved himself up to be an early third-day pick, maybe even as high as late in the third round.

The Pats were reportedly one of several teams that scouted him heavily. I like him better than David Fales, who they reportedly tried to sign last week.

I like him better than Garapolo.
