Chances Revis Stays

I'm not as sold as mccourty

Revis is a must have........I think mccourty is good, but can be replaced

Replaced!? With WHO?

He's a top 3 free safety in the league, he's still very young and on his original rookie deal, he's been a team captain, is well respected and liked by everyone in the locker room, says and does all the right things on and off the field and is a nominee for the Walter Peyton award which just further reiterates how much of a positive impact he has in the community.

Statements like this make me go absolutely mental. I hope you remember it if they do let McCourty walk (which would be a TRAVESTY), because I guarantee the people making these comments will be the same people posting threads about how horrible the FS play is and complaining about draft pick after draft pick that doesn't work out.

Mccourty epitomizes what it means to be a Patriot and is one of the best in the league at his position, about to enter the prime of his career.

You don't just "replace" that.

if the pats redo Revis' contract during the 2014 season year, it accelerates 5M of bonus to the 2014 season cap.....not sure what it means, but I think they need some cap space to pull that off

That is incorrect.

Bottom line - Revis will remain a Patriot if he wants to be paid as an elite cornerback (12 to 14 APY) on a short-term deal (through 2017). If he wants to be paid as the best defender (16M APY) or a long-term deal past 2018 he and the Patriots will part ways.

It hasn't crossed your mind? Revis held out of AFC Championship contenders (LOL) with the Jets. You really think he wouldn't do the same here?
Yes, but perhaps he regrets that decision? Especially since it probably led to his exodus from the Jets, whom he tried to come back to in the offseason. My personal opinion is that as players age they become more concerned with their legacy and with winning as opposed to maxing out a contract. Since a great legacy can last you a lifetime of future deals...but then again who knows.

No.

you created a thread title making it look like a Revis extension had been agreed but all it was was mere speculation on your behalf.

That is incorrect.

can you elaborate? as I said, I wasn't sure ,

but your website says: "Any extension in 2014 is likely to increase Revis' 2014 7 million cap number"

yeah....I'm not sure how the pats give both revis and mccourty market value......you going to wrap up 20M/yr for the 2 of them? forget ayers, dump solder, dump mayo

ayers, ridley, vereen, solder, gostkowski, develin, branch, bolden, casillas...they all going to take below market deals so that mccourty can get his?

I'd love it if it can happen, but every unit has a budget

$ for $ he stays here.... he knows better than that to stay with a top dog team, even if it means a million less per year or so....

Let's take a look at what a defensive back who turns 30 in July 2015 with one division championship to his name could command. He's very good. Maybe the best at his position, but there's no there there in terms of meaningful wins.

Revis' cap number is $7 million in 2014 and $25 million in 2015 for a total of $32 million over two years, according to the estimable Miguel Benzan's page: http://www.patscap.com/

The Patriots save $20 million by cutting Revis after this season, but still pay $5 million in guaranteed money. Revis 2015 cap number is roughly twice what the Patriots are set to pay one Tom Brady. Nobody has twice the value to the Patriots of Tom Brady.

Here's a look at the CB as it stands right now: http://www.spotrac.com/rankings/nfl/cap-hit/cornerback/limit-25/ Top of the market in 2014 is $12 million.

It's clear to me that Revis will not be a $25 million cap hit next year, but if 2014 ends well between him and the Patriots, he could receive that money if he re-works his deal. Something on the order of $12 million per year for three years would put another $36 million in his pocket, and he gets to play with a team that will be in the championship discussion for the duration of that contract.

A lot will depend on what he envisions his NFL career to be. If he walks for the next big pay day, regardless of who is making the offer, as he did with Tampa Bay, good luck to him as a mercenary. As much as it would be a drag to see him leave, I say good riddance. Demonstrating a little bit of commitment to the Patriots and his teammates would be in Darrelle Revis' interests.

Darrelle Revis needs to consider his age. Revis turns 30 in July 2015. Revis is in his 8th NFL season and has already blown out an ACL. He is not, sadly, going to be able to play forever. With a multi-year deal, how much is a 33-year-old or 34-year-old cornerback worth?

The average career of an NFL cornerback is 2.94 years, and for a guy like Revis who has made Pro-Bowls, the average is 11.7 years according to this data: http://www.statista.com/statistics/240102/average-player-career-length-in-the-national-football-league/

That is because any extension would most likely involve a signing bonus on top of his
$5 million prorated signing bonus
$1.5 million salary
$500,000 roster bonus

this idea that the patriots dont pay people is highly exaggerated. They pay players they feel are elite.

they paid Gronkowski, moss, mankins, wilfork, mayo.

and Revis is an elite player who deserves 16million$ a year. I dont see how the patriots would/could let a player of that calibar get away.

I dont know why, but I am hesitating on buying a Revis jersey. I want to buy one now, but if he walks, then it will be a waste of money. I usually buy jerseys of players I know that will be here 3+ years.

i was 50/50 like 3-4 weeks in....i am like 80/20 now he stays

He will stay, and will be compensated according to his level as one of the best CBs in the game

Other teams will offer more, but he will stay bc he will accept getting paid his value rather than more than his value

I don't think other teams will get the chance to offer $$ because they will lock him up before FA starts..

the pats pay to the cap as much as anyone else........my point is that revis is THE priority ...... especially when it comes to signing FA DB's

I think he stays but say good bye to Jerrod!

That's why i say 3 years 45 mill or something like that. '15'16 and '17
