Football Outsiders has a database of snap counts -- http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/snapcounts. You can select on one team, all season, and sort by any of the columns. Anyhow:

  • I wondered how Ryan Allen could have fewer snaps than Gostowski, given that he's the holder, until I recalled that he's in for about half of Gostowski's snaps overall.
  • The figure of only 3 ST snaps for Tyms looks odd as well.
  • Only ten guys are listed as having no ST snaps at all -- 2 QBs, 4 RBs (including Blount and White), 2 CBs (Browner and Dennard), and 2 WRs (Dobson and Thompkins).
  • Iron men include Solder and Vollmer (#2-3 in offensive snaps, plus taking a considerable number of ST snaps, making them #1-2 on the team overall) and McCourty (#3 in defensive snaps plus almost 1/3 of the ST ones, for #3 on the team overall).
  • The guys out there for >90% of the offensive snaps have been Brady, Solder, and Vollmer. Next is Connolly, followed by Edelman/LaFell in a near-tie at 80%, and Gronk at 75%.
  • Revis, Ninkovich and McCourty have played over 90% of defensive snaps. Collins, Hightower, Chung and Wilfork are in the 75-85% range. Nobody else is over 50%.

I think Tyms just started playing on ST this past game.

Didn't Connolly miss a game too?

Wasn't there a stat during last weeks game that Ninkovich was leading the league with 94% of the defensive snaps?? Mr. Iron Man....

According to that database, what you said is accurate if we restrict it to DL. A few tens of DBs (mainly) and LBs seem to be ahead of him. Indeed, among all defenders, he doesn't even lead on the Patriots -- he trails Revis by a single snap. :)

Also, some teams have just had more defensive snaps total. J J Watt is several percent below Ninkovich, but ahead of him in total defensive snaps (leaving offense and STs aside).

picky picky

Let me say it differently...picky picky ;)

Ninkovich played all 78 D snaps yesterday, along with Revis, Hightower, Collins, McCourty and Browner.

Chandler Jones had 55, much more than I expected..

http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/new-...ones-hits-55-in-return-akeem-ayers-dips-to-31

Pieces that really interest me, aside from Chandler's action:

DEFENSIVE TACKLE
Vince Wilfork -- 44 of 78
Sealver Siliga -- 32 of 78
Alan Branch -- 16 of 78

Add Chris Jones' 25 and the healthy rotation that started last week continues. I might be more excited about this development than any other on the roster. DL depth is a big contributor to playoff losses, particularly in 2010. With healthier bigs, it allows NE to play a faster back seven. This is how I feel right now.

Logan Ryan -- 31 of 78

I think Ryan got too much heat after the Green Bay game. He didn't play well, and he hasn't quite developed in his second year (shocker!) but I still hold out hope for him. It was good to see him look OK yesterday.

Duron Harmon -- 31 of 78
Tavon Wilson -- 18 of 78

That's a lot of snaps for this duo, particularly for a game that wasn't out of hand until the end of the 3rd quarter. The fact that they were both involved in the second quarter pick speaks to the fact that these weren't just game ending snaps as well. Is safety depth better than we think?

Just as an FYI - we have all that info here as well:

http://www.patsfans.com/new-england-patriots/stats/2014/snaps/offense/

I update these each week usually by Tuesday night, although I've added all the plays and numbers from this week into each of the different categories so it's all up to date

You can view the entire collection of stats here, which are sortable by down, quarter, etc.
