Pats extend Cannon 2 years

This would make sense if they really don't plan on paying Solder $7mm.

Or if they think 2013 is a better approximation of who Cannon is than the smaller sample this year.

Considering the likely incentives, Cannon's pay isn't that excessive if it remains a backup. And it isn't excessive at all if he starts playing as well as he did last year.

Connolly is 32, Cannon is 26.
Youth is a benefit.
But, by comparison, Sanchez is 28 and Rivers is 33. I'd rather extend Rivers, in that comparison.
Anyway, interesting decision, and it really raises a question around Solder.

I think this might mean moving Fleming inside. Solder has struggled at times this year. You can't take away the fact that he was pretty good in 2012 and 2013. Not too smart to judge a player based on his worst year. A one year deal for 7m isn't too much for a LT who has done the job before. I figured we'd let Cannon walk, but none of us are the GM. And, thank god for that.

It's probably an incentive-laden contract, which means he is in the $2.5mm range if he stays a backup and gets a bump if he starts. I'll agree with you that it demonstrates they feel he is starting caliber, but I don't think it says anything about their plans for Solder or Vollmer.
I agree for the most part. They are paying what they think Cannon is worth to the team. He has primarily played RT here but in his final year at TCU, has played LT- and well.

Vollmer has played well this year, but will be 31 next year and right or wrong is a bit injury prone. I don't see the team cutting him next year as he is a $6.1m cap hit.

Solder...I've already stated that if the Pats pay him the $7.4m, it wouldn't be the worst decision but I do wonder what they are thinking....

Wow, if somebody had said they extended Cannon and said guess the dollars for a two year deal I would have been off by 7M. If he's playing LT Hoo-man better be lined up on his hip every down.

If asked what Patriots would be extended next, I would probably have said 10 other names before Cannon.

I'm guessing this has something to do with Solder's situation, as I can't otherwise explain why it would be important to get it done early.

Any details on the contract yet? I haven't been able to find anything.

I would have had a Chris White extension ranked higher if I made a list.

He was fine last year. He just isn't a guard obviously.

I would rather have depth, and he at least offers this!

All I have heard is that Cannon received a $3.2 million signing bonus.

Thanks. That's all I've been able to find, too. I would have thought details would have started to leak out by now.

BTW, I can't find Tim Wright listed on your cap breakdown for either 2014 or 2015.

Connolly has played much better - why not extend him?

Connolly might have been first, except that he isn't an OT.

I wouldn't be at all surprised at all if Connolly is next.

Because he's 32 and (IMO) the weak link on the offensive line.

As for this signing...I get it. Seems like a lot of money, but it's depth at one of the most critical positions, and I wouldn't be surprised if the team envisions Cannon as a starter in the future.

Would be lowball a 9 Mi dollar contract, for 3 years instead of 2?

This is something of a non-sequitur, for all we know they have been in talks with Dan. Mid-season extensions aren't driven by pure priority.

I know we have been admonished not to related this to other impending free agents, but I think that's pretty relevant. The team will need some serious money to re-sign (or replace) Revis, McCourty, Gostkowski, Ridley, Vereen, Connolly. This absorbs a notable amount of that funding.

I overstated the contract value in an earlier comment. It now appears to be a $2.5mm/year deal to be a backup and extra end line blocker or a $4.5mm/year to be a starter. Scenario one isn't that much more costly than going on the FA market and scenario two allows them to save money by not spending it on Solder or Vollmer. Either way this deal doesn't appear to have much impact on their ability to sign the bigger names.
