Pats extend Cannon 2 years

Solder's 2015 option was picked up so he's not a FA until 2016. I don't know Vollmer's contract, but I think he might also be a FA that year.

Vollmer got a four-year deal after 2012, so he hits FA in 2017.

Solder is. He has a 5th year option, but he hasn't played up to it. Having Cannon under contract means the team has some options, and won't be negotiating under duress.
As oswlek mentioned, didn't solder have the option picked up? I think I remember somebody mentioned a 7+ million figure, but that could have been for Jones' option.

4.5 mil/year?

Am I missing something here!?

That becomes fully guaranteed at the start of the 2015 league year, so the Pats would have to release him before the end of the 2014 league year.

very curious about the contract. i can't help but imagine that it is loaded with incentives like 3.2 up front, rest guarantee near vet mins then bonus for games started or snaps played, etc.

I think the pats view him as a Pats type of guy. Work hard, work smart..do what he's told..his life is football and learning football A BB type of guy. He is flexible and can play several position (or is being trained to) so as we go to more heavy sets he becomes valuable and he is multi-position backup.

Hope it works out and hope we can keep Solder too.

Jones' and Hightower's options become available during the coming offseason (after their third season).

I thought they had already picked it up, no? Or are we saying the same thing?

I understand that, I just want sure who the mid 7 million a year number applied to. I'm guessing solder, but it may have been an estimate for Jones in a nothing to talk about, off-season speculation thread.

We're saying the same thing. I'm simply pointing out that it's already guaranteed against injury (if a first-rounder has an injury that keeps him out of the 2015 season), and will become fully guaranteed at the start of the 2015 season. They can get out of it if they release him before that (they can't trade him, since he goes through waivers).

I think your in agreement there, he is just adding we can get out of the contact by cutting him prior to the start of the 2015 league year.

This is peculiar. $4.5m AAV for a backup G/T? He's versatile but really? Well, gotta think Connolly and Wendell are renting...

I mentioned it as well. It's only guaranteed for injury, though, and Solder's play this year doesn't make it a given that the Pats will follow through with it.

I'm hearing Nate Solder has been extended as well 2 years, $200 with a possibly Turkey sandwitch if he gives up less than 100 hits on Brady per season.

Link?

It was a completely layup move just a few months ago, maybe even a few weeks. I have a hard time seeing Solder anywhere else next year.

Exactly. I'm not sure the Pats want to pay Solder $7.438M after this year. Having Cannon signed lets them look at a more favorable extension, with a contingency plan if things fall through. Vollmer-Cannon-Fleming is a workable base for a rotation.

Who had Slater and Cannon being the first two guys to get extensions?

4.5m per season sounds like a lot for a guard who can sometimes swing to tackle. Hopefully there is very little guaranteed money, so if the Pats need to part ways they can with little cap impact.

If I had 4.5m extra, I'd rather give that to Revis if the choice is keeping Cannon, or extending our best DB.

I like the signing. It removed a bit of uncertainly from next year and next. If the team wants to consider Fleming a candidate at guard, then they certainly need to solidify the OT position. Cannon is an OK backup OT. That is needed given Vollmer insure history and Solder's contract issue (this year or next).

The teams need to negotiate with Solder and Connolly. I suspect that the patriots would not want to pay Solder over $7M for 2015 on a 1-year deal. I'm sure the team would like a long-term deal. BTW, Welker's agent represents Solder.
===============
2015 Lineup without Solder and Connolly
------------------------------------------------
OT: Vollmer, Cannon
OG: Wendell, Fleming
C: Stork
BACKUPS: Kline, Devey, Barker, Haupmann
=============================
This is bad enough. Consider this situation with Cannon gone, as so many projected. This move provides flexibility. The team can now negotiate with Solder.

Personally, I would not be surprised if Connolly is next. Connolly stands head an shoulders above the other backups.

I would like to propose that Revis only be discussed on threads about him. Otherwise every transaction will be about Revis.

Revis will sign or not. There is plenty of cap money to pay Revis lots and lots for his services. The cap savings for signing Revis is $13M, even if he is paid $16M a year.
