Patriots signed OL Marcus Cannon to a two-year contract extension, per source.

A little surprising.

In fairness to Cannon, the Patriots need to keep linemen on the squad so Brady is used to seeing magnificent amounts of pass rush pressure during camp and practice.

I'm not particularly fond of Cannon's play and this move is surprising but I hope this investment pays dividends sooner than later. Hopefully his level of performance improves to reliable NFL lineman.

1. I'm sure this move is at low cost, or the Pats wouldn't be doing the deal now. Cannon's market value can't be that high.

2. It's another case of keeping your options open. Solder, Vollmer, Cannon, Wendell, Stork and Fleming are all under contract through 2015.

3. They presumably know more about Cannon than we do, and can better gauge his development and upside. Most of us screamed bloody murder when Wendell was re-signed last spring. That's worked out ok so far.

We have one of the best RTs, if not the best RT in the game. We drafted Cannon's replacement in Fleming.

Cannon could have got decent $ as a FA, so I'm curious what we gave him to accept being resigned. It better be cheap.

I'm somewhat befuddled by Cannon's season to date. He looked like he had taken a step forward in the preseason, only to be thrown in at LG despite not playing there in any of the games. He's been OK as a substitute tackle, but not as good as he was in 2013. And has looked downright brutal as a blocking TE which makes no sense whatsoever for a guy who was a competent full-time tackle just last year.

I had assumed it was going to be an amicable parting of ways with NE already having Cannon's replacement in house and Marcus seeking out a starting job elsewhere.

Luckily, both of our OT's have been healthy this season so we barely seen him at his natural position. But last season he was good and overall good insurance to have. I'm guessing he won't cost us too much anyway.

I see the Patriots hedging their bets and protecting themselves in the event of injury or free agency departure in the near future.

I hope Patriots gave him a backup contract, that would be a good deal, even if Fleming pass him in the depth chart the next year you can trade him.

I had assumed that too, though what Cannon has done to show that he deserves a starting spot elsewhere escapes me. But I barfed at the Arrington and Wendell re-signings, and they have worked out ok, so maybe the team knows what they are doing.

I am sure the team will plan to use this as leverage with Solder, who has been qualified at 7mill with none guaranteed.

If they want to keep Solder, they may be able to drive the price down a bit with a player ready to play. Or, if they think 7mill is a bit much for what Solder is producing, they may see it as an easy asset to move to another team.

They also have Vollmer who is a back ache away from retirement, so having as many options as posisble is never a bad idea.

There are a lot of teams that could use 2013 Cannon. He would have gotten some interest.

I agree. 2013 Cannon was looking good, and I had high hopes. This year's version is reminiscent of 2013 Wendell. Time will tell.

Unexpected, but interesting. If they got him at a reasonable price, it fits in with their plan to go stronger on the line. Obviously, he hasn't played well of late, though he did last year.

I'm guessing he had a nagging problem, or was thrown in at guard with zero snaps there in preseason and had a loss of confidence. If it's reasonable, maybe they work him at guard next year and get either a starter or a big guy who can back up four positions, including LT which is critical.

Just spitballing here, I did not expect this. BB likes to buy low and sell high and maybe some time and confidence will pay off as we turn over the interior line positions.

Ya think that Belichick guy knows what he's doing, eh? That's not what I've read.:D

I don't see the "decent money" projection that you may. I think his market would have been rather limited. One would assume that the new extension will be on the cheap for sure.

I'm surprised. I felt as though Fleming would taken over his role and that Cannon would have been gone in FA.
