Darrelle Revis

This does not represent the market for any of the players you have suggested. There are varying degrees of skills and capabilities in the NFL. Revis and McCourty are the very best at their positions. The juniors you have named as replacements are not.
The "juniors" don't get much playing time so how could they be? We'll see but you can't pay every good player. Common sense.

Yes, you can pay every good player. The juniors don't get much playing time because the starters are better than them.

I'll be shocked if both Revis and McCourty aren't extended. There's plenty of money for both, with the cap likely hitting 138-141M next season. It may mean that someone like Wilfork or Mayo will have to be cut (or maybe not, depends on how they feel about bringing guys like Vereen. Ridley, Chung, Amendola--who I assume is getting cut--or Ayers back), and that would suck, but if the alternative is letting McCourty or Revis walk, I'll take it.

Sub role? Chung has been a near full time starter this year.

Yes. What I was getting at is that he usually he was coming off for obvious passing downs. He really excels against the run and was surprisingly effective in coverage.

But I think we might have the personnel to replace both of those individual roles effectively in case we need to shave off a few millions. If we can keep him as well.. great!

The Patriots have until the end of the 2014 League Year or right before free agency begins to pick up the option.
If they do pick up the option, Revis will be paid a $12 million roster bonus on April 1st. Have been told that the Patriots have the ability to convert the roster bonus into a signing bonus until April 1st.

Thanks, Miguel.

I see no reason why they wouldn't at least highly consider picking up the 2nd year, should an extension not be agreed upon. I just can't see taking much risk with this specific player.

I feel much more confident about the possibility of keeping Revis than I initially did at the beginning of the year. I think his confident play within the system along with the winning atmosphere has to raise the odds dramatically.

I can't speak for Deus, but my statement has nothing to do with a lack of desire to re-sign McCourty. Prior to signing Revis, McCourty was my top priority for this off season. I just think that Revis is such a dominant force that he has leapfrogged Devin. Obviously I would choose keeping both over either of them.

This is really what it comes down to 100 percent. Well said.

FWIW, I posted the following straw-man on the draft board earlier today:

Very nice work, mayo.

For whatever it may be worth to you, I wonder if you are overreacting a bit to the play/importance of Akeem Ayers, with your projection of 4/16? Personally, I would have a difficult time envisioning that kind of a deal for him here.

Possibly. But there is a market for pass rushers, and he will be worth something. BB has compared Ayers to Ninkovich, and I could see him valuing him the way he does Ninkovich and Arrington, so I used Arrington's deal as a template. I think that would be a good deal to keep Ayers in NE - he might get more elsewhere, but not necessarily, and he's fit in well here. At age 25 he'd still be young enough when this contract is done to get another, assuming he merits it.

Rob Ninkovich's conract expires after 2016, and I think of Ayers as moving into his slot. Jones and Hightower are still on 1st contract money for another year and Collins for 2. Ninkovich will be 32 when his current deal expires. So see locking up Ayers as a good way of ensuring a DE/LB rotation for the next 4 years.

If it takes less, so much the better in terms of cap space. But that's why I used that number as a starting point.

4 years / 62 Million Dollars

It starts there.

It starts there.

I had 4 years/$60 with $45M guaranteed. Signing bonus of $20M, and base+incentives of $5M, $9M, $11M, and $15M.

I think a few things will be important to Revis:

1. Guaranteed money. $45M is in the ballpark of Patrick Peterson (who is 6 years younger than Revis; $47.3M) received, more than Richard Sherman ($40M), and not far off from JJ Watt received ($51.8M) and Gerald McCoy ($51.5M).

2. An AAV that places him above the top paid CBs, and close to the top paid defensive players in the NFL. The AAV for Peterson's deal is $14M; Sherman's is . The top AAVs for defensive players in the NFL are Watt ($16.67M) and Mario Williams ($16M).

3. Not giving up any money from his current deal. Revis' current deal would put $20M of cash in his pocket for 2015. The above proposal gives him a $20M signing bonus, plus another $5M in 2015 and $25M guaranteed beyond what he would currently get. That's non-trivial.

My proposal is basically a 3 year guaranteed deal at $45M, with a 1 year option year at $15M. By 2018 Revis will be 33, so it gives the Pats some protection if his play falls off.

I think it's a pretty reasonable deal. If Revis really wants much more than that, I think it may make sense to just keep him for 2015 on his current deal and live with the consequences.

No, he doesn't usually come off the field in obvious passing situations. He usually stays in and covers receiving tight ends.

Agree. I really think he will be here next year..a couple months ago i was 50/50

you are crazy if you think revis is better than deion. i hate homerism like this. go check deion's stat. it's mindboggling. he basically shut everyone down. only time he gave few tds here and there were against HOFers.

deion stat 95-98

1995 -- 16-for-47, 158 yards, 0 TD (9 games)
1996 -- 22-for-46, 225 yards, 0 TD (16 games)
1997 -- 12-for-39, 159 yards, 0 TD (13 games)
1998 -- 20-for-42, 198 yards, 0 TD (11 games)

he was even better as a falcon and niners. and physically revis doesn't come close deion in terms of speed, size, fluid hips, and quickness in space. deion's speed is once in a life time kinda speed. his closing speed was not human.

what revis is better at deion, however, is revis is much more physical. deion doesn't like to get physical. but his supreme athleticism simply was enough to shut you down completely.

Deion was great, no doubt about it. The fact that he couldn't be bothered to make tackles (even to the point of boasting about it) takes points away from him though. If Deion got his wish and played for Bill, I wonder if he could convince Deion that tackling is part of doing his job.

Deion also played in a NFL where they didn't cater to the QB and offense like the do today. DBs could actually touch players back then..now you breath on them and a flag.

But still Deion was a beast. But i like my Revis :D

Darrelle Revis has no incentive whatsoever to take a back loaded deal especially since Richard Sherman's contract and Patrick Peterson's contract are not back loaded.

Darrelle Revis previous contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was not back loaded.

Darrelle Revis next contract should be at least a 3 year $45 million contract or 4 year $60 million contract with salary cap hits of $15 million per season. Signing bonus should range from $11 million to $15 million based upon Richard Sherman's contract and Patrick Peterson's contract. First year base salary will most likely be guaranteed.

The aforementioned proposed contract extension would provide $5 million in salary cap savings for the New England Patriots during 2015 NFL Season.

That's what i said...3 for 45 or 46 and i think he takes that and take some cap savings next year off his 2nd year of this deal

$5 million in salary cap savings from the current Darrelle Revis second year "option" could potentially pay Devin McCourty in the first year of a contract extension.

I think they keep both Mccourty and Revis next year. I hope Ayers and Branch as well but won't be able to keep everyone with a big Revis and Mccourty deal.
THose 2 deals right there will be 80+ mill

Ayers will most likely test unrestricted free agency.

I would only sign Branch to a veteran minimum deal.
