What does Hoo-man bring to the table?

who do you replace him with?

I agree with Darryl...he's kind of like 2014's version of Gary Guyton. He may not be the best, but he does enough and he'll be there until something better comes along.

Sounds more like Eric Alexander to me. I remember thinking Guyton could actually be good from 08 to 10 or 11. That's funny to say now.

I don't think he's that bad a blocker, you just only notice him on the ones he misses. I think people are over thinking it. There just aren't that many starting tight ends in the league that can block like a lineman, and if you're already paying one like you're paying Gronk, you don't generally overpay for a guy in Hooman's role. He is what he is.

Hooman had a hard time with Mark Ingram, but so didn't Nate Solder.

His college scouting report called him a good blocker, with limited pass catching ability.
I seen him get blown away pass blocking last week, so the idea of him as a blocker was the
not anything that has ever caught my eye.
I saw Gronk blow a blocking assignment. Obviously he sucks. Since BB is an idiot and I know all, cut him. So it is written so shall it be done.

Guess what? Those linemen for SD (I forget their names) beat actual linemen and I hear rumors they GET PAID.

[\sarcasm]

I swear this is the easier spot to upgrade on the team...easily

These threads are amazing. If I had a nickle for every time some Pats fan (who probably dosent know that much about the game to begin with) asks why "so and so" is on the team. Apparently these geniuses think these players are a complete waste of a roster spot while the pats FO seems to think that these players are the solution at that position given the price and options available.

Given that the pats FO seems to know what they are doing, I am going to defer to them and hope that these people gain a little more perspective.

He is actually a great blocker in my opinion. He is the 3rd TE. How many yards do you expect from a 3rd TE. He also plays behind Gronk so....

I have advocated drafting a TE, perhaps HUERMANN of THE Ohio State University. Maybe as high as the fourth round? Perhaps.

I'm guessing about 8.5 inches and thick

They need to draft O'Leary out of FSU and cut Hooman in the offseason.

Hooman is a mediocre blocker and receiver. He's probably a better receiver than Cameron Flemming but not the better blocker. I think he's still on the roster because he works hard for cheap and plays the wedge on the kickoff return. I haven't been able to watch the games a 2nd time while slowing things down this season but I'm guessing Hooman is a better blocker than Wright.

I've been wishing for the Patriots to draft a Gronk level blocker when he was at his best who also has Hooman's receiving skills or better. We need a better backup blocking tight end. Tackles won't do it as they'll need to be able to run a route decently.

I think James Develin is a way better receiver than Hooman. As for having Develin on the line I haven't watched him enough to know how effective he is on the line as opposed to blocking from the backfield.

The answer to the question is, "not enough"!
I find it rather surprising that no one in the last 2 years has been able to beat him out of his job in TC. He's not a good blocking tight end, he's not a good pass catching tight end, he doesn't play much if any on special teams. We need to put some resources (either draft capital or $) into a solid TE to go with Gronk that can help with the running game and pass blocking. Any pass catching ability would just be a bonus. It just shouldn't be so hard to find this but it has been.

I think he brings naked pictures of the coaching staff with farm animals because, for the life of me, I can't understand why he's on the team let alone getting playing time over Wright.

Watch Wright blocking, and you'll understand.

He is the 3rd TE. How many yards do you expect from a 3rd TE. He also plays behind Gronk so....

Exactly. Your third TE should be an excellent blocker, which Hooman is not. Not a huge deal during the regular season but if we match up against a team like the Seahawks in the playoffs, he will be exposed.

I remember when we had a Rob "stinkovich" thread being the worst player in the NFL. Hooman clearly does enough to have beaten other guys who have been brought in. He knows the system can step in offers the odd great catch. there have been many times that he was open and Brady didn't bother throwing him the ball. Until someone beats him out that we bring in he will stay.

It should be fairly easy to replace him with someone who is an improvement as either a pass catcher or a blocker since he is poor at both.
if they could do so that easily then they would have, he is a better blocker and pass catcher than these guys who don't have a job

My contention is that Devlin should be used instead of Hoo
Devlin is an excellent lead run blocker & I prefer someone blocking the 1st enemy free in the backfield.
He catches the ball at least as well as Hoo and can also run short yardage.
Josh's and your mileage may vary
