Peyton Manning insists he is not about setting records

I think everybody is secretly if not publicly happy when they break some kind of remarkable record. Peyton should just admit it because its even more obvious with him.

The Peyton obsession has gone too far.

Makes me respect Brady all the more. Aside from the end of 07 when him and Moss tried to get the touchdown record in the last 2 games he's never been a stat whore. So glad Kyle Orton was able to convert on 4th down backed up inside the 10 or else Peyton would have thrown it to keep up the streak when they could run out the clock.

"I've broken a lot of records, and set a lot of records — I've been playing for a long time and played well at times — it's never been something that I've been about"

6. In 2009, Manning played the last regular season game in order to gain exactly 4,500 yards, and then was taken out of the game immediately after.

Some context about this one: Heading into the 2nd to last regular season game, the Colts were 14-0. The team leadership decided they would lose a game to avoid the added stress and pressure of going undefeated. Manning and other key players sat out the second half of the game against the Jets, the Jets rallied from a halftime deficit and won the game. In the last regular season game, in a snowstorm at Buffalo, Manning, Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark all played enough to reach yardage and reception milestones (Manning needed 95 yards to get to 4500) and then sat out the rest of the game, which Buffalo won.

I'll never understand why they couldn't have played the second half of the Jets game and tried to reach those yardage and reception marks and then sat out the Buffalo game entirely, if that was their priority. Either way, I'm not a big fan of putting personal achievements ahead of team accomplishments, which is why I'll always be grateful that the Saints beat the Colts in the SB that year.

Brady says exactly the same thing. Except we are Brady fans so we believe him but hate Manning so think he is full of ****. What do you expect Manning to say, "I'm pissed that my chance to get the TD pass streak record has ended" That would be a PR nightmare. Of course we know he wants the records and he knows it too. Sometimes the team and coaches are just as excited as the player is to set records and plays are called accordingly. Maybe sometimes it's the coaches who leave Manning in there to reach some goal.

Have you seen Brady go out there and count the yardage so that he lands on exactly 4000 or 4500? Go into the game with the sole purpose of eclipsing a record by a single yard? Trying to get his touchdowns to a nice round number? The one time he might have gone for the record is hard to say because in 2007, he admitted that it was his goal to get Moss the TD record (his teammate) and his record breaker actually mattered. You may also recall that year he was way ahead of Manning's pace through eight games and the Patriots slowed their offense down a lot in the second half of the season.

I'm sure Brady wanted the record- he is human as well- but I highly doubt you will ever see him play in a regular season game to reach a statistical milestone and then immediately go the bench before a standing ovation. That's Manning, not Brady. If you are going to play the game, just play the game. Frankly, I would hate any player in any sport that would do this. Could you imagine Michael Jordan playing the last regular season game to break a scoring record and then leaving the court in the first quarter? lol.

Our players have done this before. Brady and Moss in 2007. Gronk caught a pass by Hoyer for the yardage record. Bjge for 1000 yard rushing (might be for incentives rather than record). I'm sure there's been other instances. Just that we don't do it all the time.

Manning can do whatever he wants. Doesn't affect me at all.

A number of the items in the initial post could constitute playing for incentives. I'm not enough of a contract maven to know what his deals have included over the year, but maybe he gets an extra I dunno let's say what you or I make in 5 years, for going over 4,000 yards.

No, you are right. He shouldn't need to apologize for re-writing the record books. However, to use that line that he "isn't about" setting records is a joke. In addition, a good journalist might actually bring up some of the obvious contradictions to his statement. Kind of like how there are fluff articles written about how Manning is the world's greatest, most humble, most gracious teammate in the history of western civilization while failing to mention that he he publicly threw his offensive line under the bus after a playoff loss, or that he is known to override his coach's own decisions to punt the ball (never seen another player with that type of arrogance) by waving off the punt team and bringing his offense back out. Odd how those things don't make their way into print.

I agree Manning is a tremendous quarterback who is worthy of most of his praise. What I can't stand is the slob-fest by the casual fans and media. Another example: after the Super Bowl, an article was printed in the NYT about how she wants her son to pay attention to Manning and the gracious way he handles losses, which to her the most important thing. Let's just not mention in the article that Manning actually was very snippy to the media and made a snarky face to the governor of Washington during that amazing show of humbleness and grace. Let's forget that he is actually quite a sore loser, just like everyone else. I don't really care. Hey, Brady is a sore loser. Belichick is a sore loser. Those guys don't like to lose. Yet with Manning, it'e not enough that he's a great player; he also has to be the great ambassador to the game, the greatest teammate, the greatest humanitarian, the greatest human being. It is so ridiculous. I wouldn't think any less of him to know that he is a person just like everyone else, subject to not being perfect. I just hate how the media anoints him for everything.

In Peyton's defense it is an idiot media that pumps him up. (Gawd, I'm defending Peyton? I need to shower with a Brillo pad. :) )

Manning said something that is opposite of what he actually does?

color me not surprised.

still no reason for yet another manning thread.

Wrong!! Any reason for a Peyton hatin' thread is a good reason. :) BTW, if you feel that way why did you read and comment in the thread? Is/was the title misleading? (Serious question, thread titles have changed in the past.)

I think he meant "at the moment" not as part of his character/makeup. or in the current moment when he was speaking.

Similar to the way I diet between meals and snacks. Of course I'm dieting when I not eating, the diet stops as soon as food is present. Manning isn't about records unless he's playing football :D.

"Dikembe? It is me, Lionel Joseph!"

"Lionel! From the African Education Conference!"

"Yah, mon, I was Director of Cultural Activities at the Haile Selassie Pavilion.

"I remember the pavilion - we had big fun there!"

"Boo-boo yah, boo-boo yah, boo-boo yah, hah! Boo-boo yah, boo-boo yah, boo-boo yah, hah!"

"Oh, memories..."

:D
I DO NOT RECALL THIS ARE YOU SURE YOU HAVE RIGHT GUY

honestly, you are reaching. brady broke records and i'm sure it made him feel great. but we all know brady isn't about records. but records are icing on the cake. nothing wrong with that

If you want to break a record fine. But to say you don't care about records even though you clearly do is pathetic and hypocritical. Choreographing a game of keep away to celebrate it is just sickening.

The only time Manning ever shows his true colours is when he's on the field leaving his receivers hung out to dry.

Notice how the forehead has sprouted ...

With his fall off (arm strength) and all the FA signings the Donks are facing, he may be getting ready to retire.

I though he would play one more to better Farve's Reg seasons wins record. Maybe not.

These guys are all competitive, especially guys in the stratosphere, like Brady and P. Manning. So, I really don't have any problem with Peyton wanting to set as many records as he can. If he is still better than any available alternative and if his health permits it and his family agrees, why shouldn't he stick around to break Favre's record?

20 years from now, people will still be judging guys like Peyton Manning and Dan Marino vs. guys like Tom Brady and Joe Montana depending on how much they weight regular season stats vs. championships in their final rankings. That debate will continue long after all of us are under the turf and not arguing about what happens on the turf.

I too think he might be getting ready to call it quits after this season. I haven't watched many Broncos' games start to finish this season, but the clips from the last couple of games suggest that he is missing downfield and even shorter passes that he hit all the time in the past.

Also, he is 38. The same age as was Elway when he retired. I wouldn't be surprised at all if his private deal with Elway was, health permitting, to give him three years and see if he could win them both another championship in that time frame and then, if his skills were diminishing, retire at the same age as did Elway.
