Greg Bedard on 98.5 Listening (Unless the Sox sign Lester to steal the Pats' Thunder) Thread

Bedard thinks Packers should have run more vs GB. Attack at weakness, BUT interior DLine upgraded with Siliga return.

Thinks Pats made Branch and other Dline moves with SEA in mind

Even with getting gashed in the run by the Dolphins, Chiefs, and Jets earlier in the year, the Pats are 12th in rushing ypg (105) and 14th in ypc (4.1). The run D really isn't a weakness. I'd be curious to see the ypc we are giving up on the ground since the Jets game.

When considering the Pats are above average or better in all the pass defense stats and are also 14th in sacks (33) with missing Jones a decent amount, the defense is all around great.

felger was a legendary high school TE

Since the Jets game:

Chicago: 26/153 (5.9)
Denver: 17/43 (2.5)
Indy: 16/19 (1.2)
Detroit: 25/91 (3.6)
GB: 29/130 (4.5)
San Diego: 17-53 (3.1)

Total: 130/489 (3.8)

Take out Chicago (pre-Branch) and it becomes 104/336 (3.2 YPC).

LOL! Mazz doesn't give Revis credit because Rivers didn't throw to Allen, but kills Wright because Brady didn't throw to him. #mazzlogic #moronity

But isn't that perfectly consistent? It just means that whether or not a pass is thrown to a receiver depends 100% on the receiver. Allen had a bad game, just like Wright. Quarterbacks' decisions are independent of defensive coverage. The defense is there to make tackles or interceptions after the offense does its thing.

That's all fine - I just think Reiss criticizing a fellow media member in this case makes him come off as insecure. Bedard's job is to perform analysis. If I had a dollar for every time Reiss told us "I'm not a scout", I'd be a rich man - he doesn't have to put his opinion on the line the way Bedard is demanded to. Their jobs & roles are different.
BM, I only disagree with you for 2 reasons: 1) I think Reiss is a genuinely nice guy and a great reporter 2) I LOVE media on media crime and think most of the time they're way too cozy with one another.

He was misquoted. He said "a team like SEA in mind".
They also had something about him being out all night with a woman from Everett and his car getting towed which (I think) supposedly led to his being late to practice. It was difficult to follow exactly. Felger got all caught up in how big her hair was and whether she was wearing an Andy Moog shirt. Because apparently that describes all women from Everett.

I agree with you about Reiss - he does seem like a very genuinely nice guy and he is our best beat guy. I think that my interpretation of his comments were a bit a misunderstanding - he probably wasn't trying to take Bedard down a peg.

I'm watching the NFL replay of the Chargers game and Bedard is right that Solder is noticeably slow, even on run and screen blocking. He might be nursing something.

The other thing is that there are so many defenders in the area after short throws that I'd swear the Patriots have 14 men on the field.

Felger thinks GB and DEN can get knocked off in divisional round at home.

Bedard agrees, thinks their weak secondaries will be their downfall.
I agree. I think Denver might even get blown out of the playoffs, especially if they end up coming to New England. GB has one & done written all over it imo. I think their defense is going to get exploited again just like it did in 2011 vs Eli.

Belichick's favorite time of year ... Red Sox hot stove talk.
The team can safely operate in the bunker for now ...

"Logan Ryan didn't play, so technique wasn't an issue. Mac used in coverage more. Limited Dennard, Ryan. Arrington played well"

Arrington was a special teamer when the Patriots got him. Where did he learn his technique? On the streets?

People already dissing Reiss for pretty appropriate comments? How do you like this?

One defensive stat that stands above the rest for me was that Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers was 2-for-10 on passes traveling more than 5 yards downfield, with the two completions on such throws the fewest he's had in a game since he became a full-time starter in 2006. I'm just glad the Patriots could overcome the performance of cornerbacks coach Josh Boyer to produce such a dominant performance (sarcasm intended). Sorry, couldn't resist.
ha ha
