Greg Bedard on 98.5 Listening (Unless the Sox sign Lester to steal the Pats' Thunder) Thread

very true. Reiss rarely states an opinion other than "don't get too high or too low. the truth always somewhere in the middle." He sounds like a parent trying to reconcile his kids fights.

That said, I think Reiss is often right for that reason. But Bedard is paid to analyze game tape & give an opinion on what he saw - that's not really part of Reiss job description. If he disagreed with Bedard, I would expect he would do so respectfully - so I am inclined to believe that as others said above, he was unaware where the hypothesis originated.

Surprised to see Brady on Bedard's list. I thought he was good outside the ridiculous INT. I guess that INT was so stupid it might get him on the list anyway.
Brady's some sideline passes were also way off. Dont know if it was his decision making or play calling but he had some bad throws outside. 4 consective 3 and outs in the 2nd half, the QB has to share some of it.

Brady was above average compared to the league, but down in relation to his own body of work. At least, that's how I would have put it.

and remember
I'm not sure Reiss is aware the opinion originated with Bedard. Last week he referred to the Boyer story as starting with "sports talk entertainers", which is euphemism for moron Felger and Mazz.
And remember, Reiss is the Kraft's 5th son so he takes offense to any criticism of coaching

Bedard picked SEA vs NE SB before the year. SEA winning.

SEA has power running game + RW ability to run.

Mazz cites PHI 139 yards vs SEA for how good their D is

I'll grant you that. I appreciate Bedard's effort, I just wish he would stick to facts. I wouldn't have had any problem at all if he said, "look at how Ryan's technique breaks down right here." Hell, even if he said, "I have to question why Ryan went to that technique right away. Was he coached to do it? Did he think there was help in that area?" I wouldn't have objected so strenuously. But to definitively state that Boyer was the problem one week after Bedard himself said it was NE's best defensive effort in some time is mind boggling.

I agree with you about Bedard on Boyer - I do wish he stuck to the facts and didn't just throw his gut opinion out there at times. Especially when a statement from Bedard carries with it a certain gravitas due to his reputation as the "wet blanket of reason." He really should stick to reason.

All that said - I still have an issue with Reiss taking a shot at him, but it sounds like that was probably not his intent.

Bedard thinks Packers should have run more vs GB. Attack at weakness, BUT interior DLine upgraded with Siliga return.

Thinks Pats made Branch and other Dline moves with SEA in mind

Think I'd rather play GB...my default reaction now: always give me the opponent with the lesser defense in the postseason. Especially with these defense, we did OK against Aaron Rodgers, and I feel we would again - and we aren't going to face a better QB.

This is another bedard leap IMO. BB is not making moves in the regular season with seattle in mind when he has to fix his own team for the next game. We were getting run on and our Dline was thin.

Well that's a given. That goes for Revis, Gronk and all the other upper echelon guys. Brady RARELY throws red zone picks and he's done it twice now in a month. There was also that awful pick at the end of the half in Indy. Very un Brady like.

Felger thinks GB and DEN can get knocked off in divisional round at home.

Bedard agrees, thinks their weak secondaries will be their downfall.

Feller thinks if Gray wasn't on SI he would be back on field now.

He was misquoted. He said "a team like SEA in mind".

I don't agree with Bedard on this one. We picked up Branch when we were more injured on the D-Line. And in recent years, we've been light on DTs--not enough quality and quantity. We're certainly in much better shape than last year (an easy accomplishment), but also prior years IMO (since 2010).

(opinion alert) I feel like the better defenses in recent post-seasons performed best when they had good D-Line depth. Everyone is feeling the wear-and-tear, but more depth in the trenches goes a long way to remedying that.

Haha I like Reiss, he's like the positivist of sports journalism, will only offer what we know for sure. I really like Bedard because he goes further with his opinions, usually in an intelligent way, and his analysis is almost always insightful, not just about the Pats but the game itself. However, I think he enjoys being a 'hipster' with his opinions too much (Akeem was great, whereas Collins was good but SIGNAL CALLER IS OVERRATED; Brady rolling out is definitely OVERRATED...), he likes to trash the common narratives and do his own, which is both his strength and weakness (sometimes leads to annoying conjecture).

Bedard thinks the Browner hit was not a legal hit given the nature of the NFL. Felger agrees and thinks BB will be fined.

Mazz thinks it was clean

We need to stop using BB to describe Brandon Browner, because I just spent too many moments trying to figure out why the head coach would be fined for a DB's hit
