"I've broken a lot of records, and set a lot of records — I've been playing for a long time and played well at times — it's never been something that I've been about"

http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_27090139/briefs-peyton-manning-not-worried-about-seeing-his

I can't believe I am starting a Manning hate thread because I am usually trying to avoid them on here, but I just couldn't help myself here. To say that he isn't about records is just so laughable and hypocritical that it deserves its own thread.

Just a few points:

1. Ian Rapoport reported just a month ago that Manning wants to break records before he retires.

http://nesn.com/2014/11/report-peyton-manning-wants-to-break-major-passing-records-before-retiring/

2. Manning is the only player I am aware of who actually choreographed his "victory lap". This was after setting the record for career TD passes.

3. In 2004, Manning played the last regular season game in order to break the single season touchdown record, and then he was taken out of the game immediately after. Sounds like he wasn't playing for the record at all.

4. In 2013, Manning played the last regular season game in order to break the single season yardage record, and then was taken out of the game immediately after. He broke the record by one yard. Must have been a huge coincidence.

5. In 2007 AND 2008. Manning played the last regular season game in order to surpass 4,000 yards (in order to add 4000-yard seasons to his resume), and then was taken out of the game immediately after.

6. In 2009, Manning played the last regular season game in order to gain exactly 4,500 yards, and then was taken out of the game immediately after.

7. In 2012, Manning played the last regular season game in order to gain exactly 400 completions, at which point he was immediately taken out of the game.

8. In 2013, Manning played into the second half in order to gain exactly 450 completions, at which point he was immediately taken out of the game.

9. In every season, but especially in his record setting years, Manning has thrown the ball deep in the fourth quarter during blowouts against lowly teams in order to pad his stats and break records.

Ice, I can't argue with your points and agree the hypocrisy is laughable, but the guy also shouldn't have to apologize for scoring touchdowns. After all, that's what he is supposed to do.

I'm sure there are many other QBs who would play for those same records but they just don't have the talent to make it happen. Belichick & Brady have also been accused of running the up score against lowly teams. I'm ok with that though, after all it's the defenses job to stop the touchdowns (not the quarterback's).

As much as I favor Brady in the Brady vs. Manning argument, that shouldn't stop us from at least acknowledging Manning's greatness. In fact, While I still think Brady is better, Manning is a damn good QB and even people around here shouldn't take too much offense when others feel he is the best of all time. I think the general population agrees that Brady and Manning are 1A and 1B (it's just the A vs B that changes in opinion).

Thank you for the post though.Your examples did provide an interesting read on his thriving for numbers (I'm just not sure I blame him).

No, you are right. He shouldn't need to apologize for re-writing the record books. However, to use that line that he "isn't about" setting records is a joke. In addition, a good journalist might actually bring up some of the obvious contradictions to his statement. Kind of like how there are fluff articles written about how Manning is the world's greatest, most humble, most gracious teammate in the history of western civilization while failing to mention that he he publicly threw his offensive line under the bus after a playoff loss, or that he is known to override his coach's own decisions to punt the ball (never seen another player with that type of arrogance) by waving off the punt team and bringing his offense back out. Odd how those things don't make their way into print.

I agree Manning is a tremendous quarterback who is worthy of most of his praise. What I can't stand is the slob-fest by the casual fans and media. Another example: after the Super Bowl, an article was printed in the NYT about how she wants her son to pay attention to Manning and the gracious way he handles losses, which to her the most important thing. Let's just not mention in the article that Manning actually was very snippy to the media and made a snarky face to the governor of Washington during that amazing show of humbleness and grace. Let's forget that he is actually quite a sore loser, just like everyone else. I don't really care. Hey, Brady is a sore loser. Belichick is a sore loser. Those guys don't like to lose. Yet with Manning, it'e not enough that he's a great player; he also has to be the great ambassador to the game, the greatest teammate, the greatest humanitarian, the greatest human being. It is so ridiculous. I wouldn't think any less of him to know that he is a person just like everyone else, subject to not being perfect. I just hate how the media anoints him for everything.

Manning said something that is opposite of what he actually does?

color me not surprised.

still no reason for yet another manning thread.

I really have don't have an issue with a guy wanting to cement his legacy. But it's just annoying that Peyton acts like it's not a priority for him. Just acknowledge stats matter to you and move on.

I thought that when you lied your nose grew, not your forehead.

He's just as bad as Drew Brees when it comes to record chasing.

I think it's more about him being obsessed with control than it does him needing records records IMO. He has a deep need to control everything around him including that little staged celebration. He's the ultimate control freak.

With his fall off (arm strength) and all the FA signings the Donks are facing, he may be getting ready to retire.

I though he would play one more to better Farve's Reg seasons wins record. Maybe not.

He's not alone.

Emmitt Smith's last three years were horrible.

All to break Walter Payton's all time rushing record.

Well interestingly enough, he did buck the trend Sunday by not throwing a TD to extend his consecutive games with a TD streak, one short of Brady's 52.. my guess is this is why this question came up?

Emmitt broke the record in 2002, his last year in Dallas and 3rd to last in the NFL. He only played the two years after that because Arizona wayyy overpaid him. So his case was more of chasing the money.
