With second-year linebacker Jamie Collins taking over signal-calling duties from injured Dont'a Hightower, the Patriots allowed just 216 yards and held the Chargers to four conversions on 13 third-down plays. Against Green Bay, the defence was much worse. The Packers gained 478 yards and were 10-for-17 on third downs. - See more at: http://www.lillooetnews.net/patriot...n-in-san-diego-1.1655685#sthash.q0zSHTBY.dpuf

Question - do you stay with Collins at signal-caller, when Hightower comes back? Or is this a fluke?

I think it's Hightower's job to lose. I also don't think Collins' showing is a fluke. The difference in the stats is that... yanno... Green Bay is a MUCH MUCH better team than San Diego. Like MUCH better. Their personnel is better and the QB is a LOT better.

Collins was a surprise, though, and is definitely deserving of that role in Hightower's absence.

In my personal opinion you are comparing apples and oranges. I think it was just a fluke as Green Bay offense >>>> San Diego offense. Just my opinion

FWIW, Collins did a good job as the signal caller against Buffalo earlier this year. BB lauded his work after that game, too.

I wouldn't call it a fluke. They had a good defensive game plan against the Chargers and executed it perfectly and Collins was a big part of it.

As for the Packers game ya they gave up some yards but Packers went 0 for 4 in the Red Zone and if not for one bad play at the end of the half maybe the Pats come away with the win.

I agree with you. I meant a fluke in a way that Hightower could have had the same success. The only variable was the team they were playing. I'm not taking anything away from Collins as I think he played amazing.

And it's possible that Collins is better than Hightower but I need more data than just one game vs an amazing offense and another against just a good one.

How much of GB's offensive success can be attributed to sub-optimal Patriot signal-calling? I can't immediately support an answer great than "none at all".

It's a misuse of statistics at least.

Hightower was fantastic with the green dot against Denver, he didn't fall Manning's theatrics and made the right audibles (from what you can tell on TV anyway).

Having multiple players who can do the job is great for the team.

Whatever they are doing works, even holding Green Bay to 26 points could considered being successful(they average about 32.5 per game), so the progression of Hightower to Collins works for me.

It is a really good thing that someone else can step up.. to assume this role, competently.

Not nearly enough data to draw any conclusions either way.

All I can say is: I'd rather have three capable signal-callers (Mayo, Hightower, Collins) than one or two. :)

Clearly, this situation can't be allowed to continue. We need more data. I'd suggest having them alternate, every other play, going forward, so we and the coaching staff can evaluate properly. The team owes it to the fantasy football players, at the least.

...and a whopping 44 ppg at home! I do consider that a successful defensive performance.

the green bay loss was not a failure by any stretch. that was a game of inches and a couple of those inches and the pats win it.

What about the children? Don't we owe it to them? Won't anyone think about them?

I, for one, would love a rematch on a neutral field........say Arizona :D
