Brady Passes Joe Montana for 4th All-Time in Career Comebacks

With the 4th quarter drive to put the Patriots ahead 16-14 on the Stephen Gostkowski FG, Tom Brady passed Joe Montana for 4th place all time in comebacks defined as "an offensive scoring drive in the 4th quarter, with the team trailing by one score, though not necessarily a drive to take the lead. Only games ending in a win or tie are included."

It was Tom Brady's 32nd 4th quarter comeback. Peyton Manning tops the list with 41.

The list is interesting. Manning, Marino, Elway, Brady and Montana are numbers 1 through 5, not a bad place to start a discussion of best all-time QBs. 6 through 10 are Favre, Tarkenton, Testaverde, Unitas and Eli Manning.

That list is a testament to longevity and determination.

I think longetivity more than anything. I mean if they'd scored that FG in the 3rd quarter he doesn't get the stat?

Not that I'm unhappy to see Brady on a list that is obviously one of great QBs, but it also seems like the kind of arbitrary stat that any very-good-to-great QB who plays on a decent team for a long time would rack up.

It's even more interesting when we compare the QB comebacks in the playoffs. All the same names are up there but one. Guess who?

Except for the Manning brothers, who are complete opposites. One is below average in the regular season but very good in the playoffs. The other is Peyton, who has played in the most playoff games.

Good point. Even the Sanchize is ahead of Peyton on that list!

Manning has 41 comebacks, 76 losses. Brady has 32 comebacks, 46 losses. As usual, Brady is much better but Manning gets the accolades based on longevity.

Of course this should be looked at in percentage. If you don't let your team get behind you cannot get a comeback win.

Yes, this definitely one of those 'funny' stats. After all, Eli Manning has a lot of comebacks too but he also has A LOT of opportunities to come back.

Brady, on the other hand, only has a few chances since his team is most often in the lead.

Obviously wins in general are the most important stat but it still is good to see this team win by making some clutch plays in the fourth quarter. Certainly a quality win.

Yeah, it's not an equal stat. I'd pout an asterix on this one, given the lack of offense to overcome and the stuck in the mud three quarters preceding it.

Tom has had some real comebacks to rival any.
