The Patriots had an open spot on their 53-man roster after wide receiver Aaron Dobson was placed on injured reserve earlier this week, and they filled that spot Saturday by activating defensive lineman Sealver Siliga off the short-term injured reserve designated for return list, according to the NFL transaction wire.

Excellent. Adding depth on the defensive line at this time of year is very helpful to managing the number of snaps that Wilfork and Branch get as the playoffs approach. It would be nice to see Siliga get 10-12 snaps tomorrow, and to see some fresh legs up front.. Chandler Jones is the other piece on the line that would complete the picture.

Siliga and Jones return to the field with a better pass rushing group since Ayers arrived for emergency duty. Pressuring quarterbacks becomes increasingly important at this time of year. Good to see a (knock on wood) relatively healthy team entering the final quarter of the season.

Siliga is potentially a nice boost to the defense for the stretch run; I'm glad he is back.

I think you have it right. Siliga isn't needed per se to help fix a rush D -- the Rush D is playing well already. However, Vince and Branch taking a combination of 10 to 12 less snaps is a big deal for December/January football (not to mention if someone is out due to injury). Fresher players in the trenches come January is a BFD.....

All about freshness. I may get shouted down, but one of the reasons I feel we lost to Denver in the AFCCG last year was that the D was flogged to death due to injuries. We need to be able to rotate at times.

We will be tough to beat with a team that is strong

Why would you get shouted down? It clearly was one of the reasons.

Defensive depth & strong rotation = SB trophy for Seattle last year.

Though people may go Talib centric and focus on the guys we lost, rather than the fact that the guys who stepped up (some have now gone and some have lesser roles) being tired.

My Mrs just had a baby and I'm not sleeping. Any nonsense posts aren't my fault LOL

Congrats, brother!

Congrats on the wee one. Commiserations re: the sleep deprivation.

Had a pretty good game too

Appeared to have a good game considering he's just back from a long layoff.
Patriots Run D is stout. They are helping to force plenty of 3rd and 5 or longer on a regular basis. As of now it's all about getting third down stops by the Pass D. They do get enough stops and they have a good shot to win the SB. They allow to many conversions (a la GB, a la SD in the first half) and they will live on the razor's edge each playoff game.

I can't tell if he got bigger while on IR-DFR or if I just forgot how big he is, but the on-field result looked good either way.

He was balling yesterday much nicer having some depth on the inside. run D is back where it needs to be.

He has a little bit of a nasty streak, the d tackle group is looking pretty solid. Should be able to get a good rotation for these big boys.

There have players over the years (Kyle Love, etc.) who have been compared to Wilfork, but only Siliga comes close to meeting the ability that Wilfork offers on the football field.

With him there they hardly missed Hightower and Jones. Awesome.
