In a week that saw the Raiders soundly beat the Niners, the Browns lose a heartbreaker, and Manning get shut out of any TD passes, it shouldn't have been surprising to see this game be as difficult as it seemed. We should NEVER forget just how hard it is to win in the NFL

Like an old man I fell asleep during the post game summaries, so apologies in advance for any redundancies

1. Watching Solder get drubbed early a couple of times was disturbing. Watching him recover and dominate later in the game shouldn't be dismissed. Ingram was a high pick who is finally coming into his own after dealing with injuries. He's a good player and will be a test for any OT. But the fact is, as the game went on Solder played better and better. Far too often we forget that the "other guys" get paid big money as well. Credit needs to be given for Solder taking the hit and having the toughness to bounce back.
.
2. The being said, the OL (ncluding the TE's,) didn't do much to open much in the running game againstSD's front. That's a bit concerning since the next 3 front 7's we face will all be better than the Chargers. So while I think both Connolly and Wendell do as good as they can with what they have, if there is one area that needs an upgrade next season,

3. All that being said, it shouldn't be forgotten that despite a horrible start to the season, this cobbled together OL (without Logan Mankins) as given up less than half (18) the number of sacks as well as fewer hits and hurries. It's a VAST improvement that shouldn't go unnoticed.

4. I hope by next year Tim Wright will have a consistent role in the Pats offense. Right now it really seems so hit and miss. I know I'm confused.

5. I guess I feel obatgated to comment on "the penalty". The league simply has to make this something that is reviewable. I don't blame the officials for calling it. Its easy for us to see it unfolding in slow motion replay, but at game speed, it looked a lot worse than it was. If the goal is to err in favor of "safety", I can see the flag being thrown. HOWEVER, if the league even wants to give more than lip service to getting it RIGHT, then the solution is simple and will take less than another beer commercial. Its something that really should be implemented before the playoffs.

6. That kind of turn around could have easily cost another team its game. I'm sure many of us feared the worst. Clearly the Pats are made of better stuff.

7. You know its easy fodder to wonder how teams like Tennesse, TB, and. Buffalo couldn't find room for Cassilas, Ayers, and Branch, but I wonder if that says less about how great our FO is (and it IS great), and more about how many quality NFL athletes don't have jobs. The Pats aren't the only team in the league that has guys playing well who were recently on the street

8. You know every now and again, Tavon Wilson makes a play in one of the limited opportunities he gets. He made a great hit on Gates that forced a punt. It makes me wonder if he is very quietly turning into the player BB hoped he'd become, but is just not getting much playing time because of how well Chung is playing. To me it just confirms how much depth we actually have in the secondary Just a thought.

9. What made Brady's pick so frustrating wasn't just that it happened at such a bad time, or cost them a chance at the lead, or was such a bad throw. What was so frustrating to be was how wide open Gronk had become behind Te'0. Had he thrown it deeper it would have been an easy score. Which makes it all the more curious because USUALLY when Brady misses a guy deep, its generally an overthrow.

To put it into perspective, think about Rodgers' TD throw to the TE. It would have been like having him underthrow that ball and Chung picking it off. BTW- that's exactly the reason I constantly forgive Brady for overthrowing so many deep passes. I have always felt its because Brady is so protective of the ball, he wants to make sure if HIS guy doesn't make the catch, no one else will. That's why this pass seemed so puzzling.

10. I'm very glad that so many people here have avoided the knee jerk impulse to simply blast Brandon Browner for getting too many penalties and occasionally getting beat deep. That's simply who he is. He ISN'T a perfect CB, but a CB with some very unique skills which can greatly contribute to a good secondary as a piece of the puzzle. I also think he's the victim of his own reputation and is unfairly called on occasion....but not that often. He is what he is. We as fans have to take the good with the bad, and thus far, the good has far outweighed the bad.

Very similar to the Nate Solder metaphor, Browner got burned badly by Floydd, but as the game wore on, Browner got better and better.

12. Interesting that on occasion it looked like BB had McCourty covering Gates one on one.

11. Blount had a solid game, but I liked what I saw from Gray in his 2 carries and would like to see more. It looked to me that he had a bit more burst into the LOS.

13. Jaime Collins keeps getting better and better. I'm afraid my own expectations for him this season were too aggressive. He is still just learning the game, but his progress is really encouraging. His best is yet to come.

14. Pretty scary thinking about this defense with Highower and Jones back. We already got a glimpse of what we've missed this season with Siliga coming back and flashing. With Branch, Siliga, and Chris Jones all playing so well, it looks like we will have a relatively fresh Vince Wilfolk ready for the playoffs

15. Great job by Allen and ST's this game. Interesting to hear BB give Amendola kudos for his handling of those short punts. Its so telling that the HC would highlight what would be such a minor detail to most. Yet its why we've had 12 straight double digit winning seasons.

16. Curious that in the last of the 6 game obstacle course everyone feared, it ended with the offense playing its worst game, while the defense played its best game. 5-1 was probably about as good as we could have hoped for going into this endurance test. It even worked out that the only loss was also a non-conference game.

17. While homefield is firmly in our hands, NONE of these games can be taken for granted. Think about it, the Pats haven't played a team that had a losing record when they played them, since KC. Both the Bills and Dolphins have played very well against good competition lately, and BOTH sitll have winning records. And as for the Jets, they've been a hard out even recently and you can believe they will give it their all in a couple of weeks. they may have 3 games left, but only one matters to them..

In the end, these are all game we SHOULD win, but easily COULD lose if the Pats play poorly and turn the ball over. The next 3 games will all be physical battles, coming out relatively healthy will be just as crucial as winning

i like being scared in this manner :D

and on bradys int from what i remember he threw under pressure and more or less chucked it up there hoping the gronk would catch it

I think the OL will be fine......last nite was a good reality check and they'll get it fixed.

Ingram was an animal last night.....if he could stay healthy, he'd be an all-pro

from here it's about taking care of business......if they do what they should do, between now and getting to AZ, they have one trip to NYC and the rest of it will be home cooking

Great stuff as usual.

1-3. Wasn't Solder the guy who took a helmet to the face on a head butt into the face? I thought Collingsworth mentioned that it almost knocked him out. I also thought I saw him take a clear and full straight arm to the face that pushed him back into Brady.

5 & 10 (No, not the old department store chain). I don't want to take away any of Browner's aggressiveness but that particular penalty could have easily been avoided and still delivered the same hit.

6. That's the thing that amazes me most about the Pats. They're able to recover from just about anything.

13-14. DeFENSE!... DeFENSE!... DeFENSE!

15. The STs have been great for sure. I've stayed out of the Amendola threads but I'm a little concerned about him. I think Belichick might be trying to pump him up him with his praise.

16-17. Anything can happen down the stretch, but at least we have the edge on the other teams. Most of the the teams chasing us keep losing

I thought that the interception was caused because Brady could not step into his throw, he rushed it.

Nice to see Wilson begin to see his snap total rise, even if it is just a little bit, nice play on Gates.

Also noticed that McCourty was covering Gates 1 on 1. He made a nice play on that breakup too.

The Patriots gave up 7 points to a solid offense. I was very impressed.

As for Solder, I would just say that he was constantly dealing with hands to the face and helmet to the face type stuff. I bet he thought it would be called, because it usually is....thinking back to poor Nink getting called for a it a bunch for a lot less egregious type hands to the face....Once Solder realized that he was gonna have to deal with that, he adapted.

I think the main issue with Brady's INT was that he threw it off the back foot whilst also falling backwards.

To me, the most worrying aspect is the lack of situational awareness right there - a chance to put 3 points on the board and get the ball to start the 2nd half.

I'm also puzzled by the Tim Wright thing - could it simply be that he isn't very good at getting separation?

He might just be a good RZ target where he can use his size to win.

12. Interesting that on occasion it looked like BB had McCourty covering Gates one on one.
And in those cases it was Duron Harmon WHO played the Deep safety. Some people have complained about the missing Progress of Harmon, aswell as Wilson. Well this game showed they are right on track. Harmon backs up McCourty and Wilson backs up Chung. PC could be gone after this season with Wilson becomeing a starter.

Excellent analysis... you guys are much better at breaking this down than guys like me.

While this was a great gutted out road win, what I WILL say is that WATCHING this game... at least until Edelman's catch and run... was like...

True that. We haven't seen our defense at full strength. I would love to see jones and hightower back this week so they get can get a couple of games under their belt for the playoffs and tee off on tannehill.

4. I hope by next year Tim Wright will have a consistent role in the Pats offense. Right now it really seems so hit and miss. I know I'm confused.

I don't think McDaniels really knows how to use the 2-TE offense nearly as effectively as Bill O'Brien did. He split Wright out wide way too much. The really glory years of Gronk-AHern were under O'Brien in 2010-2011. In 2012 injuries kept them from being on the field together for more than 3 full games (games 1, 6 and 7), and then the roof fell in. He needs to learn how to use Wright, who has the potential to be a major asset.

9. What made Brady's pick so frustrating wasn't just that it happened at such a bad time, or cost them a chance at the lead, or was such a bad throw. Not the first time it's happened - he threw up the terrible interception at the end of the 1st half against Detroit, another underthrown ball with Gronk wide open in the end zone. In both cases Brady was under some pressure - more in the Detroit situation - and threw with his weight falling backwards. Leaving points off the board when in the red zone at the end of a half is a major no-no, and for Brady to do it twice in 3 games is pretty inexcusable. It's got to stop.

Very similar to the Nate Solder metaphor, Browner got burned badly by Floydd, but as the game wore on, Browner got better and better.

Browner has had almost as big an impact as Revis, IMO. That's his game - get physical. And it's exactly what the Pats need. A lot of the penalties have been ticky-tack stuff, but some of it is just the price for playing his type of game. The Pats have been 8-1 since he game off suspension, and with the exception of the Green Bay game they have basically beaten the crap out of every top receiving combo they have faced (Green-Sanu-Gresham, Marshal-Jeffery-Bennett-Forte, DThomas-Sanders-JThomas-Welker, Hilton-Wayne-Nicks-Fleener, Johnson-Tate-Pettigrew-Ebron and now Allen-Floyd-Royal-Gates). And if Kyle Arrington had been healthy against GB then I think Browner would have made Devante Adams his ***** by the end of the game.

Browner's coverage has been very, very good. The Malcolm Floyd TD catch and 28 yard reception were just great plays made against very solid coverage:

13. Jaime Collins keeps getting better and better. I'm afraid my own expectations for him this season were too aggressive. He is still just learning the game, but his progress is really encouraging. His best is yet to come.

Jamie Collins is playing at the level that I expected him right now, and has been playing at a very high level for the past 6+ games. He had rough opener against Miami with some fundamentals problems, and then had to deal with a thigh injury. But since the Cincinnati game he has been playing at a Pro Bowl level, IMO. He stepped in as the defensive signal caller against Buffalo as well, and he really started elevating his play around the Denver game.

2 wins out of the next 3 (Miami, @Jets, Buffalo) guarantees at least a #2 seed. Denver has @SD and @Cincinnati next. We obviously need to take care of business, but should hopefully be ok.

Don't forget, folks, that it was Tavon Wilson who ALSO made the game sealing GREAT tackle on that 4th down to turn the ball over to the Pats for kneel downs.

Maybe I've missed it but there's not enough praise for The Squirrel who not only makes the tough catches moving the chains but also again made the BIG Play 69 yard TD run that iced the game. He has been a consistent clutch performer. His few drops are comparable to Tom's occasional bad decision INTs, errors that do not negate an outstanding body of work. Is it that we simply expect this from Edelperson as we're so accustomed to his contributions that they're taken for granite (sic)?

According to Reiss' defensive snap count, Ayers and Casillas played 54 and 50 out of 56 defensive snaps last night:

If the season ended today and the Pats won the SB then NE would have the #32 pick in the draft, while TB and Tenn would have the #1 and #2 picks in the draft. BB would have traded down 1 spot in the draft for Casillas and 2 spots for Ayers (not including comp picks). Unbelievable.

Eh, he's made of glass, always injured, will never be a PLAYER like Welker.............

Plus that 4th rounder from Tampa Bay is looking PRETTY NICE right now, since Oakland won yesterday!!!!

Even more worrying to me is that he's done it twice in the past 3 games.
I'd be worried if there was zero pressure and he just makes a dumb play, but that wasn't the case. On the INT in Indy and last night, there was pressure up the middle which didn't allow him to set his feet and step into the throw. The play was there, but he just didn't get enough under it. Happens.

But for it to happen twice in the red zone at the end of a half is unacceptable for a QB of Brady's experience. That's the kind of miscue that could spell the end of the season in the playoffs. It's got to stop.

First pick of Day Three would be sweet but the Jets are too close for comfort. As a Duck fan I do not want the Jets to get their grubby hands on Super Mario. Tampa Bay would be a very nice landing spot for him (paired with Mike Evans and his personality fits TB more than a big media center).

I felt the same way about him fighting through it and having a decent 2nd half. On one of those headbutts, Ingram pulled his facemask down too (a penalty which wasn't called).

Siliga & Branch definitely add quality depth to this team -- in a way that I'm not concerned whe nthey are on the field. Definitely a nice sice situation to have heading into the final weeks/postseason. I was concerned that Siliga might have been dinged up bad as he took a blow to the side of the head from their RB early in the game. And Chris Jones seems to get some solid pressure up the middle. I don't often watch him, ut when I do he always seems to making positive plays. Either, I'm lucky in the plays that I watch him or I need to watch him more (so he does better ;) )

Yeah, Ryan will definitely be throwing everything he has at BB (in what will likely be his swan song/interview material for his next HC job). Will definitely keep the offense/line of their toes as they'll need to play well.
