Yes, there is room for all three on the roster. And yes, we would love to ADD Mayo to what we have now.

BTW, if Mayo were a free agent this coming year, would you pay him $7M to play in 2015, with $8M in compensation if we wanted him again for 2016). And yes, I understand that Mayo is only 29 years old.

Basically, Mayo's remaining contract is for $7M in 2015 and $8M in 2016. I'm ignoring the $6M of dead money.

I'm NOT saying to cut Mayo (or suggesting asking him to take a drastic pay cut). I am just laying out the reality of the remaining years on his contract.
Great player but no- two years straight on IR would immediately bring durability questions.

What if we go with Collins, Hightower, Ayers as LB's next year.

Ayers will be a lot cheaper than Mayo, and he'll have to move to OLB when Chandler Jones comes back anyways.

I think some are underrating how versatile and important Jerod Mayo is to our defense, not to mention how much Belichick likes him.

In my opinion, there's no doubt he'll be back, and I actually don't even think it's definite that it will involve a paycut.

The Wilfork and Mayo situations were completely different in my opinion, although we'll have to see how it all ends up.

You're right, there's 0% chance Mayo is not on this team next year.

It doesnt make sense to get rid of Mayo next year because of the big dead money cap hit --

The earliest it would make sense to move Mayo IF the reward was worth it would be 2016 where the dead money cap hit is only 2.4m

The Pats are going to roll over this year's extra cap money into 2015 anyways. So extending McCourty and Revis does not necessarily have to come at the expense of Mayo. In any case a base LB core of Mayo, Collins, and Hightower would put our best 3 LBers on the field. So all this talk of trading Mayo is premature.

If a couple million dollars would be needed to keep both Revis and McCourty, I think the more obvious candidate for trade/cut would be Amendola who is playing 3rd/4th fiddle behind Gronk, Edelman, and arguably Lafell.

I think you are looking at it the wrong way. The dead money is always there. It's a sunken cost. Look at what we can save by cutting the player instead.

Not saying that we should cut Mayo. Just that you should't make decisions on sunken costs.

You are paying $7M for Mayo.

Let's try the analysis another way. Let's say that Mayo is declared a post June 1 cut. The cap savings is now $7M instead of $4M. So, $7M of 2014 cap money could theoretically be spent for another LB. I suspect that we'd spend much less and use the cap money elsewhere.

But even if we spend the cap money elsewhere, the issue becomes clear. Should we pay Mayo (or anyone another LB) $7M a year?

7 million is a much different question and could possibly get you a guy like Torrey Smith which would really make our offense dynamic. I could see arguments for both sides and it's a very tough call. However I do think Mayo holds additional value as a locker room leader and one of our few veterans. I also prefer paying homegrown talent over outside talent. Given that we will not have a problem paying all of our own guys I think Mayo is retained but I wouldn't be shocked if he weren't.

I think the Wilfork and Mayo situations are very good parallels. They are both coming-off serious injuries with questions about their future durability and performance related to injury. Mayo's questions relate more to durability (another tendon issue), whereas Wilfork's related to ability following injury. They amount to much the same question in terms of value, however. I expect a ~4-year deal with playing time incentives to get him more guaranteed money, but get him tied-up at a reduced rate.

Relative to the OP, Collins did not look like an All Pro against Detroit. He was effective on the plays in front of him, but got caught looking into the backfield on a couple plays, letting Tate get way behind him in his zone for Detroit's biggest play of the game and losing leverage on the TE on at least two other plays - one penalty, one first-down reception.

Wow, did he step up or did he step up? At the beginning of the season people made fun of Mike Mayock when he said we had the best Linebackers in the league in Mayo Hightower and Collins despite losing Spike. Boy we have a special defense coming together in the future here.

If he gets a little stronger he would be terrific. I like the guy.

His tackling has improved and overall is improving by the week... my dreams of him becoming our Lavonte David are soon to be realized! :D

Collins has clearly made a leap. He always had the athleticism and the raw tools, but now he's really got the mental part down, and has cleaned up his fundamentals. That he could be flying all over the field and doing so much without making a bunch of mistakes and while wearing the green dot and QBing the defense is very impressive.

He did a great job out there but did you see his interview after the game? :D Whats up with his grill...there is more gold in there than a pimps '78 Caddy :). Lmao, even the announcers here in the UK said something about it, I was dying laughing. Glad he is on our team though.

Mayo isn't going anywhere. His daughter is an important member of the Patriots network.

Jamie Collins is developing into a potential multi times All Pro. He is getting better every time out. The fact that BB trusts him enough to call the defense speaks large. When he was drafted a lot people thought who is this kid. Also think of having Collins, Hightower. Ayers and Jones going forward that is a defense that could be dominant for years to come. IN BILL WE TRUST.

Mayo-Hightower-Collins-Ayers-Casillas would be the best, most versatile, and deepest LB group in the NFL. Only SF would be comparable.

Hopefully BB rescuing them from the football purgatories that are Tennessee and Tampa it bought him a little favor at the negotiating table.

I hope so. Casillas was positively giddy when he arrived here.

Considering how well HT and Collins are playing, is Mayo a full time LB when he returns?
