Cordarrelle Patterson benched

Big time fantasy football bust for me this year. I wonder if he's become a headcase?

Tons of talent. Tons of questions about his ability to harness it.

It's also a good lesson about being patient. BB wants guys who fit and who do their job, which often isn't flashy.

I saw his college teammate Justin Hunter compared to Stephen Hill the other day. Not good for either.

I was high on Hunter, personally. Not so much on Patterson. He seemed like way too much of an idiot to grasp this offense.

This is clearly an error, because I've seen many threads from just a few months ago telling me that Patterson was who our idiot FO should have drafted instead of Dobson. How Patterson had the kind of talent we need here for Tom Brady's final years. I've been told in no uncertain terms EVERY WR who we don't draft is infinitely bette than the guys we do draft.

The fact that we've had one of the top scoring offenses for the last 5 years (at least) means nothing. Clearly its ghosts who are catching those passes. BTW- Rob Gronkowski was acquired through immaculate conception ,because we all know that our FO can't draft receivers.

at least he wasn't placed on injured reserve!

The phrase that caught me was "struggling with the playbook" Coming out of Tennessee, CP was not considered the "brightest bulb" ( I might b to harsh) and is one reason the Pats shied away from him

Patterson and Hunter both had huge question marks coming out of college. That was such an overhyped WR class. In Hunter's case, the QBs he had throwing him the ball have been really, really bad. At least Patterson had Cassel for a little while.

I never got the hype on this guy last year. He was an awesome returner and a marginal receiver. He was never anything special on offense.

Jamie Collins
Logan Ryan (5 interceptions rookie year)
Josh Boyce
And the 7th plus Rick Demps was traded for Blount.

Maybe Boyce is a late bloomer and is called up now.

Any way you look at it, that's not bad for the 29th pick in the draft.

Any posters that say BB is horrible at drafting want to check in?

He has elite size/speed and movement skills, so all people saw was the upside. The fact that he can't run a route tree to save his life and relies too much on raw athleticism somehow got overlooked.

His head has always been the limiting factor; was in the draft, too, which was the main reason why I was hoping for the Pats to pick Justin Hunter rather than him. But after an explosive rookie year I figured that he would be one of those guys who's so athletic that a creative OC can do damage with him no matter how much you had to dumb down the playbook for him as a guy who can barely run a functional route. Was pretty sure I was wrong about him after his rookie season, but maybe not after all.

Collins is playing at a level that would've been worth the 29th pick by itself, so this is pretty much a textbook example of the shotgun approach to drafting. Even if Boyce and Ryan both amount to nothing (Boyce already pretty much has, and I think it's more likely than not that Ryan ends up in that category too), you still get worthwhile return.

That's some grade-A risk mitigation. Trade down, draft 3 guys instead, and as long as one of them hits, you're good. If multiple hit, it's a home run. I'm sure some will still take issue with the trade on the grounds that the Pats didn't fully capitalize on those picks, but I think that misses the point somewhat. The point is that there's always a chance--a very good chance, at that--that whoever you pick is going to bust. Trading down makes it far more likely that the pick won't be entirely wasted, as at least one major contributor is far more likely to come from it.

Why can't we draft guys like that? Oh what could have been.

You mean a high draft pick on a physically talented receiver that doesn't pan out? We have many times - Bethel Johnson, Chad Jackson, Brandon Tate, Taylor Price, and possibly Aaron Dobson

None of those guys were first rounders. Price and Tate weren't even second rounders, so I don't think they're really comparable to spending a first round pick on someone like Patterson.
