The high expectations for *insert person* here ______ was to a extent or degree unrealistic knowing how much time he was going to miss. Hey maybe he'll make the Third Year Jump! *not holding breath*.:)

I can't condemn anyone for hoping a WR with the most rookie production in Brady's tenure would elevate his role heading into his sophomore season. Sure, there were reasons to temper your enthusiasm, but he demonstrated enough ability for some level of optimism, no?

When you eat at McDonald's and get diarrhea, that doesn't mean eating a truck stop egg sandwich would have been a better decision.

Ok, now that I am done laughing my ass off, I can reply...

Thompkins had substantially more to offer the team than Dobson, in my opinion, at least based on what they showed on the field in their short tenures here. I am not saying he was the next Jerry Rice or anything, but he was a much more dependable 4th receiver and seemed to have a least a bit of chemistry and synch with #12.

All water under the bridge now, I guess. Tyms seemed to have jumped them both.

I would love to see Tyms on the field a bit, though, especially with Edelman banged up. Maybe some additional reps for Tyms could free up Edelman to rest a bit down the stretch. Either that, or a sudden emergence of the kick returner Amendola!

Agree with Oswlek.

That said, this offseason could be the most important few months of his young career and his degree of commitment may very well determine his football future.
I'll be pulling for him because I still believe he is the most physically talented receiver they have.

I'm not educated enough to say how talented Aaron is compared to anyone else, but I agree with everything else. He seems like a good kid and I see no reason to do anything but root for him.

TO BE FAIR

Branch rookie season: 43/489/2
Dobson: 34/519/4

Dobson had the best rookie season for a WR in franchise history

His foot surgery and how they handled it; holding him out of training camp and extending into the season was a big deal. The hamstring could've easily been due to favouring one foot/leg over the other. I'm confident he'll make the team next year assuming he doesn't get hurt again.
WRONG!
The best season by a rookie Patriot WR in franchise history was Terry Glenn in 1996. It's not even close. 90/1132/6.

There was plenty of room for optimism. Not quite so much any more - this season has largely eroded whatever he established last year, IMO. It may all be related to his health and to poor management by the medical staff, but at this point his desire and drive have to be proven. The talent is there, but that was also the case with Ras-I Dowling. If the kid can (1) get healthy and (2) shows that he has the toughness and drive to succeed, then I will quickly become an optimist again, but for right now he is a question mark, and I would diversify my WR portfolio.

Who is Thompson?

He's done, move on. Trade for an established reciever. For all the greatness that Bill is he can't draft WR's early. It's his only failing and I'll take it.

Agreed. There would have to be some incredibly convincing behind-the-scenes reasons for NE to count on Aaron in any way for next year. If he had some special teams use, his odds of making the roster as a fringe WR would be higher, but as is....

Dobson is insignificant to our season. But his overall future looks dim. His rookie season was overrated and I don't care that it was the most yards by a Patriot rookie. If we had retained any of our receivers from the previous years his yards would have probably been cut in half. That season is the equivalent of if we had lost all of our pass rushers and had just thrown Bequette into the fire. With enough snaps he would probably get a few sacks.

I prefer we get guys through fa/trade that have done well against us like Lafell and Welker in past years. And if we do draft one, I think it is time we go first round. I know 1st round is risky, but we overdraft skill positions unless they have injury risks(gronk, tate). Guys like Dobson, Boyce, Price, etc 5th round talents drafted way too early. If we want a guy w/ third round talent, we gotta get him in the first round. Sad but true.

There was an element of this in the early part of the year, but Aaron was a productive receiver even with Gronk, Julian, Amendola and Vereen on the field. In fact, that was his most productive time, so it wasn't just a matter of being forced the ball.

Not that it matters any more, of course.

Ok thanks for the correction. I just saw that bit reported on twitter. It must be 2nd best though. Definitely the best in the Brady/Belichick era.

Pretty sure you knew I meant Thompkins, and you were just being mean, but if you didn't figure that out, that's what I meant...Lol!

Just having fun. I'm not a meanie.

Since I was asked this on Twitter, decided to share this.

Cutting Dobson next year before 6/2 would incur a dead money charge of $436,380. Current 2015 cap no=935,010. Gross cap savings=498,630

Cutting Dobson in 2016 would incur a dead money charge of $218,340. Current 2016 cap no=$1,090,845.Gross cap savings=$872,505

I hope I eat crow on Dobson's behalf it's just that one of these years let hope four years from now #12 wont be behind Center. Would just love to see Brady throwing to a young Elite WR before he goes off in the sunset.

unbelievable. so much for the 2nd year leap..lol.
what happens in lafell gets hurt?? that would leave minitron, amendola, and tyms. pretty mediocre receiving core. maybe we'll see more of tim wright. he's really a WR anyway.

in the offseason, just sign some veteran receiver. kt- cut. dobson -ir...boyce- practice squad.

The Pats should talk with an NFC team that's good at picking WR's.They let us know who to draft at WR and we let them know who draft for any other position. :)

Yeah, Bill should go to Green bay and ask how they do it.

He also cannot draft secondary players.
