The Patriots vs Packers POST Game Thread

Of course the offense was not doing the defense any favors either today. Kind if discouraging pats can only muster 21 points on this defense considering they put up 34 on the lions.

OK - I'm just going to keep saying this until someone thinking like this responds: the Patriots scored exactly as much as they do per drive as they have all year. If Ghost hits the field goal, then they are actually more productive per drive then they have been all year.

This game is not on the offense. The assumption that the Patriots offense should have the same output regardless the number of times they possess the ball is insane.

Against bad QBs, the Pats can get away with a straight-up 4 man rush. Against good but immobile QBs, they can rush any two of Ninkvich, Hightower, Collins, and Ayers.

Against the good and mobile QBs, you have to take scramble lanes into account, and that really limited their front-6 creativity. I think they needed Jones to get much of a pass rush today, and if he's not back then I think the upcoming Miami game could be a bit scary.

A few thoughts on the game.
  1. The officials screwed the Patriots by consistently ignoring Packer WR push-offs and OPIs all game.
  2. Corners 3-5 were ****house. Rodgers embarrassed them.
  3. McCourty and Chung were ****.
  4. No pass rush.
  5. I didn't see any Defensive Linemen put their hands up at the LOS to try and bat the ball down.
  6. Ninkovich consistently over pursued and lost edge contain. Lacy picked up some big plays.
  7. Patriots OL was meh.
  8. Patriots use of the run game was meh.
  9. Brady was meh outside of his moments of brilliance.
  10. The Patriots lost the game on two critical players, one at the end of the first half and on Solder's whiff leading to the 3rd down sack.
  11. Tough game against a tough team at home. A lost opportunity.
  12. Red Zone D was brilliant.
All of that and the game was still there to be won. That's the one encouraging thing. Green Bay cannot play a better game than that and they just squeaked by the Pats. They're a good team but very beatable.

One disappointment was that Brady pass to Gronk in the end zone on that final drive. I thought that was a mistake; it was a low percentage play that even if it had come off would have left plenty of time on the clock for Rodgers. Obviously that's an easier thing to say watching it on TV, but I get they should have continued advancing the ball in chunks, as they were doing successfully. Still, it was one play and isn't a comment on how Brady played overall.

And can we let Gray out of the doghouse please.

Yeah, and you don't think some of that had to do with the fact that the Packers did not punt at all in the first half?

It's hard to block defenders when you are standing on the sideline most of the first half IMO.
yada, yada, yada...he's a highly paid professional...so the **** what that he had to stand on the ****ing sideline...who cares?

this...was...his...moment

everything else is ********

No, but I do expect more points on the board than 21 from an offense that averages 32.5 per game.

So you expect them to average the 100% their average point total in a game when they have about 75% the number of possessions?

EDIT: Patriots average 11 possessions a game going into today. Had 8 today. (Excluding kneel downs).

The Pats gameplan was to let GB chew up TOP and get yardage but to tighten in the RZ and hold them to FG's. Only problem with implementing this type of gameplan is you limit the possessions afforded your offense which, makes it imperative that your offense better score when they get those limited possessions. Today's Pats offense struggled enough times, in those ltd number of possessions, and it cost them.

Was it just me, or did the Packers disguise who was coming just before the snap on some of their rushes? And if so, it seemed to me that this led to some confusion among the interior of the offensive line.

You know, I didn't pay too much attention to what GB was doing. I was in full fan mode, but if anyone can confirm this, please do.

Lack of Pass rush might be the death of us like it's been the last several years

Hey we lost a close one to a great team on their turf. Thankfully if there was a game we could afford to lose, today was it. There's a chance we can afford one more, but I wouldn't test that. Gotta win the next four, and I'm confident we can do that.

Twenty six points doesn't tell the whole story, you're ignoring the fact that the Packers offense was on the field for over thirty six minutes today, with Brady on the bench that duration. Not completely excusing the offense for today but asking them to score twenty eight points when on the field for twenty three minutes is a tall order even if it's a leaky D they're going against. You need possessions for decent odds at success, and those opportunities were limited considerably. No turnovers either or big plays on ST's. You can't just look at total points and absolve those guys, defense definitely needs to be held responsible for that dispairty in TOP. Twenty six points is okay if you can force some turnovers and get your HOF QB more opportunites, but in the manner it was given up today, that's not good enough.

Still I agree we could have ran the ball more, wasn't happy with the overall play selection or failing to involve Gray more. Two big mistakes on the coach's end. Key breakdown in pass protection and poor pocket presense by Brady on the biggest offensive play. Like I said offense could have been better, but I still place more blame on D and not getting off the field most of the day.

As I mentioned earlier, not too concerned with this loss. I am concerned with the pass rush, one more game like this in January where we can't generate anything whatsoever and it's likely we come up short of the ultimate goal for the tenth straight time. Inability to generate turnovers or stops, keeping Brady on the sidelines and off rhythm, pretty much been a central theme in alot of playoff losses.

The Patriots played so poorly that I suppose I should be encouraged that they didn't lose 45-10. They were outcoached on both sides of the ball and made more mistakes in the first 30 minutes than they had in the last month.

Either Green Bay isn't all they're cracked up to be or NE is so good that their D+ effort is better than an A game by most other teams.

My thought as well. I think the final score belies just how poorly the Patriots played tonight. I couldn't really discern any semblance of a coherent gameplan on offense, while GB's was quite obvious and executed to great effect.

GB deserved to win. The fact that NE had a chance at the end blew my mind. But let's say Gronk comes down with a TD at the end, does anyone NOT believe GB finds a way to score ?

Mike Reiss ‏@MikeReiss now
CB Brandon Browner says it came down to third down. Also tips cap to Packers and their offense clicking while throwing to everyone.

Its been many many yrs since Adam left. At his age in the cold weather games, I dont think he wouldve lasted this long in foxboro. Playing in Indy helps him. And IIRC, he has missed a FG in the superbowl. I love Adam but this is way too late to bring up a player who is gone 8-10 yrs ago.
we disagree.
but, the pats still have their destiny in their own hands.
hopefully, our FG kicker will be up to his next challenge.

Good thing it was also against a NFC opponent loss doesn't affect the AFC standings

Poor game planning in my opinion. 30th ranked rush defense, no attempt to seriously establish the run. Our passing offense needs the threat of the run to sell play action, and they didn't do it today. So the pass rushers could pin their ears back and their defense looked better than it really is.

Not surprised we didn't pull it off, but margin for error was going to be thin regardless. Still think we're in the driver's seat.

So you expect them to average the 100% their average point total in a game when they have about 80% the number of possessions?

Even 80% of 32.5 is 26 points.
