Source: the Patriots have waived S Don Jones. He's been a special teams contributor for them this season.

I liked him, I hope he returns. Maybe we need the second LS for this week although I can't imagine Aiken wouldn't clear waivers if we released him. Can we not release him with a concussion or something ? No word on the corresponding roster move yet, I don't think Siliga is ready. Maybe the LS for now then one LS will go when Siliga returns ?

Surely for Siliga.

Surprised to see Jones cut though, he's been a monster on special teams this season.

Jones is on the bottom of the depth ladder. I think that he was just cut 2-3 weeks ago, and then re-signed.

Don't think so, although he was inactive 2 weeks ago.

Timing sucks. roast turkey, apple pie and a pink slip. The business is what it is, we fans profit from BB's cold approach to the business.
The question now is, did he get sent completely packing or is this part of the extended roster moves where Jones stays on BB's speed dial and will likely play a meaningful game again?

wouldnt be surprised if hes back soon like Cole was.

Have a hard time believing that. Siliga didn't practice today or yesterday which makes him playing this week very doubtful

Probably because they don't think Aiken will pass the concussion test and Hughlett was signed to the PS yesterday

I agree that this is not likely for Siliga, who has not been activated yet. A little odd because no player was activated in his place.

1. Roster management: The Patriots could still have plans for Jones (if he clears waivers) but might feel they need to create an opening on the roster for another position (e.g. long snapper) this week. By making the move Thursday, perhaps the Patriots feel there's a better chance Jones would clear waivers and they could bring him back once their short-term need at another spot is addressed.

2. Not about football? A move like this, out of the blue, makes one wonder if it wasn't about football-specific reasons.

3. Not related to Siliga: One thought is that perhaps the Patriots are clearing a spot for the return of defensive tackle Sealver Siliga from the short-term injured reserve list. But since Siliga has yet to participate in a regular practice with the team, that seems highly unlikely.

Liked Jones as a special teamer. They've got lots with Casillas also playing LB. Hope Jones clears waivers.

Is it really possible they'd do this so they don't have to cut Aiken and have Hughlett snap for a week? How bad could Hughlett be? Aiken has flung then over the head and through the end zone, bounced them, shoestringed them? High left, low right. ad infinitum...Are there really that many worse long snappers out there? It's baffling.

I'm guessing it has more to do with Aiken's concussion than anything else.

I don't think Jones will clear waivers, he is too good at special teams and has shown some promise as a LB too.
There must be more to this, can't see this being done for a LS. Its normal for us to be completely in the dark about these things anyways.

I agree that Jones is a top special teamer. I would like to see him back.

When did he show any promise as a LB? He has had no defensive reps as a patriot.

OT: Wasn't one of the Miami Vice guys named that?

This sort of thing is why I was talking about the team not having much fat to trim, in the Phillips thread.
Strong roster. Mildly surprising that they appear to place greater value on Devey, Kline, C. White, J White, and Tyms. Or at least they think any of those would be more likely to be claimed. I hope they are right because Jones is very good covering kicks and Butler nearly got Amendola killed when Jones was inactive.

No way they would release James White

While I may have said that I thought we'd be able to cut one of our ST guys for Phillips, it greatly surprises me that they cut Jones instead of Devey.

What on Earth do they see in Devey??

This isn't hoped to be a permanent cut, unlike the sort we were talking about earlier. As for this, it's probably a matter of OL depth (educated guess given the injury to their OL/TE). Devey may be a tuba player, but he's THEIR tuba player.
