RG3 benched; Colt McCoy to start for Washington

He wasn't awful until Shanahan put him on the field on one leg and he ended up suffering a devastating knee injury. If we could get are hands on him and rebuild him behind Brady for a few years he would be the Young to Brady being Montana.
It wasn't all on Shanahan. RGIII wanted the superman role. If he had told Shanahan that he was too hurt to play, he never would have been put out on the field.

That's what Rex would do (and did with Tebow in the Buttfumble game).

Seeing this play out makes me appreciate how good we've had it as a Pats fan these last 14+ years...

I'm convinced RGIII was the reason Shanahan got fired.

the kid has made a nuff money in 3 years to set him self up for life and does not want to play hard for a HC that has made it public that he does not care for him or the way he plays QB almost from day one on a team that is at lest 2 years away from even making the playoffs so IMO if he still cares to play football he needs to be with a new team so one like the bills with good young WR's and great defense

That pretty much sums it up, agreed. Nowadays, Cam Newton and Kaepernick are the only QBs who I'd feel even remotely comfortable running a real read option. And even Newton isn't immune to being banged up when used like that (see: ribs, ankle), while Kaepernick has had the reins pulled in so much that he's lost a lot of his effectiveness.

Russell Wilson is kinda the lone holdout in still being pretty effective, and that's a combination of him almost always running with the intent to pass, and only taking the run when there's a lot of open space and he can get down/out of bounds after a significant gain without absorbing a hit. Plus just being an overall strong downfield thrower.

Basically, it increasingly looks like the read option can only work to the extent that your QB can execute it without routinely taking hits, and so far most QBs haven't proven able to do that.

I'd summarize by saying that the most you can do is:

1. Have a few designed QB keepers per game (or a somewhat larger number of option plays that boil down to a few carries).

2. Tweak your offensive schemes so that a QB with rushing ability can generate first downs off well-defended pass plays against defensive schemes that don't account for QB rushing and even grab a couple when the defenders are more alert.

But you can't let your QB take even a fraction of a feature back's usual punishment. They have too many body parts that, if slightly injured, affect their passing accuracy.

It really sucks to see where RGIII is right now, he was so fun to watch in 2012 and now he looks like he has no awareness of the game at all.
